Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. We can't do it better than the icon! Just ask for a simple shag with layers and front pieces and voila! You have the classic Alexa look.

In terms of what she asks for, in an interview with Vogue she said, "I visit the salon... I would say every six weeks. That said, I'm quite lucky and have shoots regularly, so I will often get a trim here and there." So the key to maintaining the perfect shag is frequent trims!

6. Modern Shag with Ombré

To upgrade your ombré hair color, incorporate a few face-framing strands that are light from root to tip. The haircut will take the older ombré trend and liven it up a bit! Let’s not forget that the shag is a throwback trend, after all. Opt for a more vintage appeal paired with less obvious layers, like this cut on Florence Pugh above. This simple hairstyle is simple but has a lot of layers going throughout in order to keep it looking natural and not-too-styled. All you need for this looks is some dry shampoo for volume and maybe some texture spray to give it some body.

What causes weak fingernails?

But first, what causes unhealthy, brittle, breakable nails? A lot of factors that may not instantly come to mind. According to WebMD, these factors can contribute to weak nails:

• Aging: As we get older, our nails get thinner and can crack or peel.
• Harsh nail products: Both nail polish and nail polish remover can have strong chemicals that can damage and dry out your nails, leading them to break.
• Wet nails: Consistently have your hands in water, maybe doing the dishes or bathtime for the kids? This could be drying out your nails.
• Underlying health issues: Vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune diseases, and many other health issues could be the cause of nails breaking.
