Dunkin’ Donuts Just Jumped into the Starbucks Red Cup Controversy

For many, the holidays are marked by the change in weather, the holiday windows in department stores, the setting of holiday plans with friends and family and the appearance of Starbuck’s iconic red cups. But this year, the coffee brewers decided to go a minimalist route with their red cups and have been getting considerable backlash on social media due to their lack of “holiday spirit” (i.e. mistletoe, snowflakes, holly, reindeer — you get the picture) and over-observance of… political correctness? “In the past, we have told stories with our holiday cups designs,” said Jeffrey Fields, Starbuck’s Vice President of Design + Content. “This year we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories.” People got so incensed over the cups, the hashtag #MerryChristmasStarbucks actually trended on Twitter.

But then Dunkin’ Donuts jumped into the fray by releasing their own holiday cups last week that certainly have a healthy dose of all that was “missing” on the Starbucks cups.

The donut chain’s coffee cups certainly tick off everything on that holiday cup checklist. They come complete with a holly + evergreen wreath and the word “Joy” written in big script letters, and they’re red and green all over. How’s that for Christmas cheer?

People are actually applauding Dunkin’ Donuts for “saving Christmas” and for “getting it right.”

Still others see this as a clever marketing tactic — riding on the coattails of a competitor’s controversy for more publicity.

Still others are like, “Meh.”

Perhaps rather than getting outraged over the design of the cups, we ought to take issue with the fact that the “Joy” Dunkin’ Donuts cup is still made of non-recyclable styrofoam and will probably sit in a landfill for literally a million years. Just sayin’…

Meta, the parent company to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, recently introduced their latest social media platform to enter the ring, called Threads. The new text-sharing app takes inspiration directly from Instagram, offering a more conversational space via words, rather than photos and videos. What is Threads?

Threads is a new, text-based social media app built by the teams at Instagram. It’s for sharing text updates and joining public conversations. Sounds just like Twitter, right? 🤪 According to Meta, the mission for Threads is to “take what Instagram does best and expand that to text, creating a positive and creative space to express your ideas.”

How does Threads work?

Threads is connected to Instagram. You can log into the platform using your IG account to begin sharing text posts up to 500 characters long. In these posts, you can include links, photos, *and* videos up to 5 minutes. It’s a scrollable social media app that also allows you to like and repost others’ content. You can choose to follow the same people you follow on Instagram, if they have a Threads account, plus the platform recommends content from new creators you don’t follow.

Is Threads like Twitter?

From what we’ve gathered, Threads is very similar to Twitter. After all, Mark Zuckerberg candidly acknowledged that the platform would be Twitter's competitor before it launched. Both apps follow a newsfeed-type structure and grant users the ability to like and repost content from other users, but Threads posts can reach up to 500 characters, while posts on Twitter are limited to 280.

According to Meta, Threads is safe to use. It’s closely connected to Instagram, which Meta has longtime security investments in.

“As with all our products, we’re taking safety seriously, and we’ll enforce Instagram’s Community Guidelines on content and interactions in the app,” Meta’s website says. “Since 2016, we’ve invested more than $16 billion in building up the teams and technologies needed to protect our users, and we remain focused on advancing our industry-leading integrity efforts and investments to protect our community.”

Is Threads popular?

Though it’s still in its infancy, Threads logged 5 million sign-ups *just* in its first four hours of existence, and according to Mark Zuckerberg, the app now hosts more than 100 million users. We’d say it’s pretty popular at the moment!

Matty Healy Finally Responded To Taylor Swift's "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"

I never thought we'd get a Taylor Swift album with multiple songs referencing Matty Healy, but after multiple listens, the internet is convinced The Tortured Poets Department(the first edition, at least) has a ton of references to The 1975 frontman. (Only time will tell if TS12 references Matty too!) One song in particular has sent everyone into a tizzy: "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived." Here's why fans think the song is about Taylor Swift & Matty Healy.

What has Matty Healy said about "The Tortured Poets Department"?

When asked what he'd rate his "diss track" from The Tortured Poets Department, Matty admits he hasn't actually listened to that much of the album yet (if he ever will). "My diss track? Oh!" he laughs. "I haven't really listened to that much of it, but I'm sure it's good."

Debbie Dedes, Matty's aunt, speculated right after the album drop that he wouldn't be affected too much by the music. “She writes about all her relationships, doesn't she? I don't think it will come as a shock to him at all,” she tells The Daily Mail. “He's very happy in his new relationship [with Gabbriette Bechtel] so I'm sure he will be focusing on that.”

While Taylor Swift & Matty Healy never publicly dated until 2023, they were friends for years before that. In 2014, Taylor Swift went to her first The 1975 concert with Selena Gomez and Ellie Goulding. Then, Taylor was seen wearing one of their band shirts while Matty was spotted in a 1989 shirt. "I met Taylor Swift," Matty told Shazam Top 20 in November (via E! News). "That was really nice. We exchanged numbers. Let's see what happens."

Matty Healy & Taylor Swift continued referencing each other over the next couple years, and fans lost their minds when Matty revealed he'd collaborated on a Midnights song — even if he went on to say it was cut. After Taylor Swift performed "Anti-Hero" during a 1975 concert, and then split from boyfriend Joe Alwyn split in the spring of 2023, Taylor & Matty quickly connected. They went on to date from May to June. That brings us to "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived."

In the song, Taylor wonders if "rusting my sparkling summer was the goal" and talks about "your Jehovah's Witness suit" (Matty is famous for wearing suits during his concerts). She also mentions how the relationship "wasn't sexy once it wasn't forbidden" — which totally ties into the themes within "Guilty As Sin?" (about imaginary trysts she thought about while dating someone else).

"[These Matty Healy-focused songs] started out being like 'f*ck all of you, I love him, I’ll fix him, I don’t care what you say' to ending here basically saying 'alright yeah this guy sucks,'" one Reddit user says. "I think the order of these songs plays a huge role in this throughline of that relationship."

"Heavyweight rappers J. Cole, Drake, and Rick Ross all released diss tracks over the last couple of weeks, and none of them were as scathing as this one," another says.

How long did Taylor Swift and Matty Healy date?

While Taylor Swift & Matty Healy officially dated during the summer of 2023, another song on TTPD, "Fresh Out The Slammer" makes me think they connected before then. Referring to her relationship as a jail, she sings about how she's connected with this person before she started dating her ex. "I'm runnin' back home to you // Frеsh out the slammer // I know who my first call will be to." (Does this mean "Illicit Affairs" from Folklore is actually about Matty Healy too?)

Free Twitter is Coming to an End...Again

Cherish your little blue checkmark while you can, because pretty soon you’ll have to pay for it.

Gone are the days of free verification. Starting on April 20, Twitter, the social media company bought by multi-billionaire Elon Musk, will revoke all verified statuses across the platform. That is, unless you opt-in to the paid Twitter Blue or Twitter Verified Organizations plans. Read more to find out how much you'll have to shell out to stand out online.

How much will it cost to be verified on Twitter?

For Twitter-obsessed individual users, a verified blue check mark will run you $8/month (if you purchase through the web), or $11/month via in-app payment on iOS and Android devices.

If professional Tweeters want a gold or gray check mark, they’ll need to fork over for $1,000/month (plus tax) and $50/month (plus tax) for each additional affiliate sub-account through their Twitter Verified Organizations program.

Why will Twitter verification cost money now?

The social media platform first introduced the coveted blue check marks in 2009 to help users identify the authenticity of celebrities, politicians, brands and other accounts “of public interest.” Up until April 1, verification was historically free.

“Far too many corrupt legacy Blue ‘verification’ check marks exist, so no choice but to remove legacy Blue in coming months,” Musk tweeted in November.

Initially, Musk said that April 1st was the deadline, though that has since changed to April 20. Perhaps from backlash over the change, perhaps for the 4/20 date...who knows.

In true Twitter fashion, un-paid verified users decided to fan the flames and go out in great discourse dumpster fire on their last day with their little blue check.

We absolutely love Twitter, but we can’t help but wonder if this really a way to democratize the platform, or a way for Twitter to climb out of their $13 billion in debt…maybe it’s a little of both.
