How To Cool Your Home Without Turning On The A/C

how to cool a room woman closing the curtains

When we daydream about summer, we can be so focused on beautiful sunsets, delicious ice cream cones, and the latest fashion trends (hello linen pants and boxer shorts) that we forget just how hot it can get. After a long day of meeting friends for lunch, running errands, or just exploring the neighborhood, we're sweating buckets by the time we make it home. That's when knowing how to cool a room comes in handy — and it's more than just grabbing your favorite cooling products from Amazon, especially if you don't have A/C in your home.

Even if you have central air, running your A/C at all times isn't always the most cost-effective or eco-friendly idea. Given the fact that so many people work from home, it's important to make sure your space is as comfortable as possible. Keep reading for our best tips for keeping your home cool, without upping your utility bill.

1. Open the Windows in the Morning and Evening

Image via B+C

On hot days, it might seem like a good idea to open the windows to help with airflow. However, if it's hot outside, that will only bring the hot air into your space! Instead, specialists from Magnet suggest that you open them in the morning when the day hasn't gotten hot yet and after dinner when the heat of the day starts to cool down.

This is an especially good idea if your space gets stuffy easily because opening the windows in the morning will allow the overnight air to leave the room.

2. Cook Strategically

Image via Nathan Cowley/Pexels

The last thing we want to do on a hot afternoon is stand over a stove. Try adjusting your schedule so that you can cook earlier in the day, or swap your recipes for cold dishes like this Watermelon-Peach Chilled Soup. You can also prep everything ahead of time, throw it in the oven, and hang out in another room while it bakes.

If your kitchen feels extra hot, turn on your oven's exhaust fan (which gets rid of smoke and odors) since it will suck out some of the heat from the air.

3. Keep the Fans On

Image via Curtis Adams/Pexels

Not only will keeping your fan on help with the airflow year-round, but you can set it up during hotter months to keep a room as cool as possible. Make sure ceiling fans turn counterclockwise to suck all the heat up to the ceiling and push cool air down. Just don't forget to turn it clockwise once autumn comes!

4. Close the Curtains

Image via B+C

Similar to opening your windows strategically, closing your curtains at certain times of day can help cool your space down. They'll block out the heat of the sun during the afternoon, and keep your living room, kitchen, or bedroom in the shade. You can go with blinds, regular curtains, or blackout curtains depending on your preferences.

5. Grab Heat-Absorbing Houseplants

Image via B+C

We're always open to the idea of adding some new houseplants to our collection, so why not grab a few that can make your room feel cooler? Plants that transpire (or "sweat"), such as snake plants, Chinese evergreens, and palms, will remove heat from the air as water and nutrients leave their systems.

I'll admit it: while I don't miss school at all, I was wildly unprepared for what it would feel like to NOT get a summer vacation. Three whole months with nothing to do but read, watch movies, and play outside? I took it for granted! That's why I love watching nostalgic summer movies from the '90s and '00s because they give me that same vacation feeling — without any of the schoolwork that comes with being a kid. Here are 6 of the best nostalgic movies you can stream right now! Plus, our most-anticipated upcoming summer moviestoo.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants — Rent On Amazon

Image via Warner Bros. Entertainment

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is one of the best movies of all time, and I will stand by that statement for the rest of my life. The cast! The denim! "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield! The story follows best friends Tibby (Amber Tamblyn), Carmen (America Ferrera), Lena (Alexis Bledel), and Bridget (Blake Lively) as they spend their very first summer apart from one another. Tibby stays home to work (both at a minimart and on her documentary), Carmen visits her dad in South Carolina and learns he's started a whole new family, Lena's visit to Greece pokes at a decades-old family feud, and adventurous Bri bites off more than she can chew at soccer camp in Mexico.

There are so many relatable aspects of this nostalgic movie, and story doesn't shy away from how much growing up can suck. It taught me what it looks like to be there for my friends, how to navigate complicated relationships, how to build my confidence, and how to confront grief and anger. Plus, the movie takes you to four totally separate locations, and it's left me dreaming about Greece on more than one occasion.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is available to rent on Amazon Prime and stars America Ferrera, Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, and Amber Tamblyn.

Aquamarine — Stream On Disney+

Image via 20th Century Fox

If you didn't have a mermaid phase as a child, did you really grow up in the 2000s? Aquamarine is just one nostalgic movie I can attribute that aquatic craze to, and the story follows BFFs Claire (Emma Roberts) and Hailey (JoJo) as they make the most out of the end of summer vacay. Hailey's mom is moving them to Australia, and when she prays to the ocean gods for a miracle, the girls find Aquamarine (Sara Paxton), a mermaid who's trying to escape an arranged marriage.

This is just another film that emphasizes how deep, selfless, and beautiful female friendships are. Hailey and Claire are willing to do whatever it takes to help Aquamarine, even when it puts them in danger. And for her part, Aquamarine teaches Hailey and Claire (not to mention me!) how to make the most out of spontaneous adventures. Plus, it gave us so many iconic fashion moments like A's seafoam dress. Thank goodness for that.

Aquamarine is available to stream on Disney+ and stars Emma Roberts, JoJo, and Sara Paxton.

The Cheetah Girls 2 — Stream On Disney+

Image via Disney Channel

At this point, The Cheetah Girls 2 is in the Disney Channel Original Movie hall of fame. The songs are catchy, the sets are gorgeous, and the cast is cheetah-licious! This nostalgic movie follows our favorite girl group: Galleria (Raven-Symoné), Chanel (Adrienne Bailon), Aqua (Kiely Williams), and Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan) as they swap New York City for Barcelona, Spain. They plan to win a local music festival...if the group doesn't fall apart first.

The most iconic part of this movie is definitely "Strut," and women from all over the world have recreated it on their own trips to Barcelona. Work it! Cheetah Girls 2 is the dreamiest summer vacation ever, but it also has so many messages about working hard to follow your dreams. The movie touches on honesty, sacrifice, and what it looks like to be bold, all of which are ideas I STILL need to be reminded of.

Stream The Cheetah Girls 2 on Disney+ now. The movie stars Raven-Symoné, Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams, and Sabrina Bryan.

Holiday in the Sun — Buy On Apple TV+

Image via Warner Home Video

It's always a good time to watch a Mary Kate and Ashley movie, and Holiday in the Sun is perfect for when you have summer vacation FOMO. Mary Kate and Ashley play Madison and Alex, sisters who are overjoyed when they realize their Atlantis Resort vacation comes with their own suite. But when their new friend Jordan is blamed for theft, the twins decide to figure out who's really behind the crime. If you ask me, it's not a Mary Kate and Ashley movie without a little sleuthing!

This nostalgic movie is also a comfort film thanks to MK and A (I was obsessed!). And nothing says summer like the beach — it doesn't matter whether you're laying in the sun or playing with dolphins. There's also just something so sweet about young love, and when those relationships are paired with the twins having to stand up to mean girl Brianna (Megan Fox), it's like the perfect recipe for a 00s movie. Plus One Tree Hill's Austin Nichols?! Say no more.

You can buy Holiday in the Sun on Apple TV+. The movie stars Mary-Kate Olsen as Madison, Ashley Olsen as Alex, Austin Nichols as Griffen, Ben Easter as Jordan, and Megan Fox as Brianna.

The Parent Trap — Stream On Disney+

Image via Walt Disney Pictures

Thanks to Lindsay Lohan movies like Irish Wish, our favorite redhead is back! And every time I think about my favorite Lindsay flicks, The Parent Trap tops the list. Lindsay plays both Hallie and Annie in this Nancy Meyers movie, twins separated at birth who accidentally cross paths at summer camp. Armed with sass, pierced ears, and photos of their parents, the gals decide to swap places and get their divorced parents to fall in love. No big deal.

Movies about sisters always make me a little weepy (I really love my sister, okay?) and I love the extent to which Annie and Hallie look out for each other...after their summer camp feud ends, of course. From rainy days in their cabin to Hallie's California home and Annie's London flat, this film gives me all kinds of wanderlust, but the best part is the cast of characters. Elizabeth and Nick, Chessy and Martin, even the sneaky Meredith all come together to make this nostalgic movie one of the best Disney films ever!

You can stream The Parent Trap on Disney+ now. The movie stars Lindsay Lohan, Dennis Quaid, Natasha Richardson as Elizabeth, Elaine Hendrix as Meredith, Lisa Ann Walter as Chessy, and Simon Kunz as Martin.

Blue Crush — Stream On Peacock

Image via Universal Pictures

I had SUCH a surfer phase in middle school, and watching Blue Crush is sure to bring that back to the surface ;). Best friends Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth), Eden (Michelle Rodriguez), and Lena (Sanoe Lake), plus Anne Marie's sister Penny (played by Mika Boorem) live together in a house on the North Shore. They all dream of becoming pro surfers, and when Anne Marie is invited to join a local competition, she has to face her fear of wiping out head-on.

There is so much to be said for how much these women take care of each other, both physically (they're all helping raise Penny), and emotionally. Plus, Anne Marie's biggest dream also being her biggest fear feels so personal as a viewer because that's exactly what happens in real life: the thing you want the most can also be the thing that scares the living daylights out of you. This summer movie also makes me think about the real-world female surfers who paved the way for the next generation — and I'm sure Blue Crush will be a nostalgic movie that inspires surfers for years to come.

Blue Crush is available on Peacock and stars Sanoe Lake, Michelle Rodriguez, Mika Boorem, and Kate Bosworth.

Camila Mendes rocked the Met Gala red carpet with her sequined rosette dress, reminding me that this floral trend is still in full bloom. We've seen rosettes pop up here and there over the last year with the soft girland coquettetrends, but now rosettes are an entire moment of their own. Cami definitely crushed this trend, with the petals flowing down the length of her dress, giving her a delicate draped look. But rosette styles — a rosette dresses in particular — aren't one-size-fits all. Like their literal flower counterparts, a rosette dress can take many forms. From more structural accents to flowing flowers, there's truly something for everyone! Here are 17 ways you can style your own rosette dress moment á la Cami!

Shop The Rosette Dress Trend Here!

Bernadette Henry Chiffon Rosette Mini Dress

These off-the-shoulder sleeves and the dainty length really make this dress something special! Plus, it honestly feels the closest to Cami's actual look, given the draping and rosette placement.

BHLDN Rosette Halter Tulle Shift Mini Dress

The second closest to Cami's look, this rosette dress has all the halter top realness you could ask for! I'm really into this lilac color and the pleating — especially for a sweet happy hour-to-dinner night out with your girlfriends!

By Anthropologie Silky Rosette Tunic Top

Nothing says coquette like a slinky little silk nighty! I love this dress for a summer night out!

Fore Rosette One Shoulder Mini Dress

I think the hip rosette would somehow get in my way if I tried to wear this dress, but it looks SO cute for people more coordinated than I!

Edikted Thalia Rosette Ruffle Strapless Minidress

Powder blue is really having a moment, and I can't get enough of it here! The way the fabric just hangs off the rosette is such a delicate detail.

Nia Rosalie Dress

This rosette dress is perfect for your bachelorette party, TBH! Throw it on before your night out with the girls and dance the night away!

Adalynn Knit Two Piece

Though it's technically not a dress, this two piece is sooooo fun for summer! It's giving Cool Girl Goes To Dinner On Vacation.

Princess Polly Lorello Mini Dress Red

The red trend isn't going anywhere any time soon, and to nobody's surprise — it pairs perfectly with rosettes. This is THE Hot Girl Summer dress for sure.

Elliatt Trompe Dress

Barbie does rosettes! Well, not actually – Elliatt does rosettes here, but I'd like to think Barbie would love it. The floral bunches in three corners of this dress are really sweet here, too!

Atoir Déjú Vu Crop Top and Skirt Set

Another Hot Girl moment with this Atoir set (again, I know it's not exactly a dress)! This strappy little number will have everyone asking for your actual number in no time!

Abercrombie One-Shoulder Rosette Trapeze Mini Dress

The Abercrombie renaissance continues to win big with this rosette dress! I love the two-tiered skirt and the one-shouldered rosette strap.

Mango Ruffle Floral Print Dress

The rosettes on this dress from Mango are printed on, rather than the floral appliques we've seen so much of here. Definitely a unique take on this trend!

BHLDN Annie Rosette Mini Dress

It may be a bridal dress, but that doesn't mean that's all it's good for! While this is totally perfect for all your bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, and even wedding needs, I can definitely see this slaying way after "I do" too!

Hutch Sleeveless Rosette Romper

I'm absolutely obsessed with how much this Hutch romper looks like a straight-up dress. The rosette straps are just the cherry — er, flowers — on top!

Endless Rose Corsage Rosette Minidress

A shift dress is always a classic silhouette to stash in your closet, and this Endless Rose option is far from boring! Adorned with a handful of chunkier rosettes, this mod-esque dress is everything.

Staud Delilah Rosette Satin Minidress

Another slinkier option, the Staud Delilah Rosette Satin Minidress is chic and sexy. Pull it out for your next date night and see how your partner reacts!

Rare London Rosette Detail Asymmetric Cocktail Dress

And for my final trick, I give you this dress: 💃. While I'm only slightly kidding, I love the front hip placement of the gathered rosette and the movement of the high-low slit.

It's no secret that groceries feel more expensive than ever right now, and compounded by the fact the average American home throws away 322 cups of food a year, I'm determined to use up every bit of the food, sauces, and other cooking basics I buy. That's how I found Carleigh Bodrug. Her PlantYou page, and her Scrappy Cooking series (plus her new cookbook!), makes creating delicious recipes easier, and more fun, than ever.

What is scrappy cooking?

Image via SB Creative Studio

"Scrappy Cooking is the concept of transforming the world’s most commonly wasted foods into delicious recipes — and starting is as easy as chopping up a broccoli stem into a stir-fry," she tells me over email. "Seriously, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Look at the plants you have that you bring into your home every week, and see if there are ways to repurpose them."

With the help of Carleigh's Instagram page, I turned some broccoli stems into French fries and used up the last of my peanut butter for a noodle salad sauce. If you want to turn your groceries into a one-of-a-kind meal but aren't sure where to start, Carleigh recommends looking at every single aspect of the plant.

"Whenever I bring a plant into my home, I think about what part of the plant is discarded, and then I research whether or not it’s safe to consume (this part is important)!" she says. "Once I identify it’s edible, that’s where the fun begins. A great example of this is something like celery, which I buy often. I was discarding the celery leaves for years, only to find out they taste almost exactly like parsley and make a great base for a tabouleh style salad."

Is PlantYou vegan?

Image via SB Creative Studio

Yes, a lot of PlantYou's recipes are vegan, and they're all plant-based! Some of Carleigh's favorite recipes include mocha chocolate granola with spent coffee grounds, "chips" made out of beet greens, and pickle juice as a marinade (which is something I learned Chick-Fil-A does!). These recipes might sound intimidating or time-consuming, but that's exactly why Carleigh's PlantYou social media exists.

I can speak from experience that the videos are easy to both understand and put into practice. (Plus, the recipes are super versatile, because "when you’re cooking with just plants, if you screw something up, you can almost always fix it!"). But there are a few steps that always make these scrappy processes easier.

"The low hanging fruit to reducing food waste in your kitchen actually starts before you grocery shop," Carleigh says. "I always recommend people sit down for an hour one day a week, and make a really basic meal plan, outlining what they plan to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then, before they head to the store, shop their fridge and pantry to avoid duplicate buying. Now it’s time to compile a shopping list, and only buy what you have a plan for! Done right, this will take care of 80 percent of your food waste."

What can I buy to save money on food?

Image via SB Creative Studio

In addition to meal prepping (check out our favorite apps to reduce food waste, too!), the PlantYou chef + author recommends having a few recipes that use up a bunch of ingredients in one go. "It’s really important to lean on staple recipes that allow you to 'clean out the fridge,' which is really what my new Scrappy cookbook is about," Carleigh Bodrug says. "I wanted to arm people with great base recipes (like stews, curries and stir fries), where they can interchange the vegetables and produce items they have on hand every week to reduce waste and save money."

"By using up leftovers, repurposing ingredients, and being more mindful about the food you’re bringing into your home, you'll notice a decrease in your grocery bill," she continues. "The average American family of four wastes over $1700 worth of groceries per year — which is like a phone bill every month! Not only does being Scrappy benefit your wallet, but it also feels great knowing you're making healthier choices and contributing to a more sustainable planet."

Okay, so you know what you want to eat, and you've budgeted for groceries, what now? "I look for ingredients that are versatile and can be used in multiple recipes to minimize waste," Carleigh says. "Quality, longevity, and sustainability are key factors in my purchasing decisions."

What is the proper way to store food?

Image via B+C

After you've whipped up recipes like the Fiesta Fries below, it's important to store them properly to ensure they're fresh for as long as possible. "Use quality food storage and meal prep containers, and keep fruits and vegetables separate to prevent them from spoiling," Carleigh tells me. "Different types of food will require different conditions for optimum long-term storage. This applies to fresh produce, as well as dry and canned foods."

We all have days we don't want to cook (PlantYou's Carleigh Bodrug included), which is the perfect opportunity to support a local business. "On days when I don't feel like cooking, I usually rely on quick and easy options like smoothie bombs from my freezer, which are in my new cookbook," she says. "I also often have homemade soup ready to go that I’ve made in advance or have frozen in the freezer. Sometimes, my husband and I opt for ordering in from local restaurants in our small town in Ontario, especially on Friday nights after a long work week. It's a convenient way to support our favorite vegan small businesses while enjoying a hassle-free meal."

The Met Gala is known for its amazing red carpet looks, but I pay just as much attention to the beauty. These final makeup looks are just as beautiful as the fashion, and fresh-faced, glowy beauty is EVERYWHERE. Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor showed up to the Met Gala wearing a face full of Charlotte Tilbury makeup (done by Sofia Tilbury!), and, TBH, I want to shop every single product. Keep reading for the full scoop!

Recreate Phoebe Dynevor's Charlotte Tilbury Makeup Look

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Charlotte's Magic Cream

Start off your makeup routine by ensuring your skin is glowy on its own! This magic cream features hyaluronic acid (without any of the sulfates you might be worried about) for a hydrating effect you'll love.

No matter whether you have normal or dry skin, this magic cream works to reduce fine lines and give you a lit-from-within glow.

Magic Serum Crystal Elixir

Your skin will absolutely drink up this serum because not only does it feature Vitamin C, but it's also got the super-hydrating Polyglutamic Acid.

The Charlotte Tilbury Crystal Elixir will increase your skin's hydration by 172 percent in 60 minutes, and will make your skin firmer and more elastic!

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Body Cream

Glitter like the diamond of the season yourself with this Magic Body Cream. The vegan formula features hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, and caffeine.

Beautiful Skin Medium Coverage Liquid Foundation with Hyaluronic Acid

The secret to incredible makeup might just be using products infused with skincare ingredients. This foundation uses the benefits of hyaluronic acid to give you a natural glow.

The medium finish lasts for 16 hours AND it hydrates, smoothes, blurs, and brightens. Talk about a multi functioning product.

Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder

Setting powder should be the perfect final touch — it shouldn't make you look cakey. This Charlotte Tilbury pick is a pressed powder instead of a loose powder, which gives you way more control over how much you use.

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Beauty Blush Wand

Blushes can make or break your makeup, and for Phoebe Dynevor's Met Gala red carpet look, this blush beauty wand was the cherry on top of the look.
It's matte, but this blush still makes you look glowy and natural, rather than painted-up. Plus, it's cruelty-free and vegan!

Pillow Talk Multi-Glow

Get the glow of your dreams with this highlighter that has finely milled pearls, mica, and oil for the smoothest application ever.

Charlotte Tilbury Brow Cheat Refillable Hair-Like Eyebrow Pencil

This micro-precision tool lets you fill in your brows with hair-like strokes that won't make them blocky or unnatural. There are plenty of shades to match a variety of hair colors, and you don't have to worry about ashy undertones.

The long-wearing formula also means your brows won't fade over time. But the best part is that since this Charlotte Tilbury product can be refilled, it's more sustainable!

Charlotte Tilbury Super Nudes Easy Eyeshadow Palette

Nothing says understated glam like a nude eyeshadow look, and there are so many shades in this palette that you can create an endless amount of eye looks! My favorite combo is the brown, champagne, and gold, but the warmer tones are the perfect transition to summertime.

Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes Mascara

The best thing about this Charlotte Tilbury mascara is that it's both lengthening AND volumizing, which work together for your fullest lashes yet.
Even though the lash-lifting polymers are strong, there are no parabens or sulfates.

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Hydrating Lipstick

Hydrating lipstick that's also matte sounds too good to be true, but this pick proves it can be done! It's long wearing for all your date nights, GNO's, and movie marathons, and it's vegan, cruelty-free, and paraben-free.

Brie Larson in Prada

Image via Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images

Brie Larson's 2024 Met Gala dress might be in my top 3 looks of the night! The orange bodice and lavender overlay contrast each other in color, but the opaque vs. transparent fabrics are also contrasting — but thanks to experts at Prada, they're working together, not fighting.

Tyla in Balmain

Riley Keough in Chanel

We know from Disney's Sleeping Beauty that Elle Fanning is basically a princess, and this airy, shimmery dress is just further proof.

Zendaya in Maison Margiela

I KNEW Zendaya wouldn't disappoint after giving us slay after slay every year. This moody look is simultaneously giving Mrs. Peacock from Clue and Clara Bow from The Tortured Poets Department in the very best way. Could this look singlehandedly launch us back into a 1930s beauty phase for the fall?

Zendaya shocked us all by stepping out in a second look for the Met Gala red carpet. This one is just as moody as the first and features a colorful floral headpiece.

Josh O'Connor in Loewe

What Josh O'Connor's Met Gala red carpet look lacks in color, it more than makes up for in detail. The coattails! The shoes! I'm obsessed.

Mike Faist in Loewe

Mike Faist kept it simple and classy at the 2024 Met Gala, and decided to accessorize with a sparkly turnip.

Gwendoline Christie In Custom Maison Margiela

After her run in Game of Thrones, it's no surprise Gwendoline Christie can balance reality and fantasy with ease. I love the Queen of Hearts vibes she's got going on.

Emma Chamberlain in custom Jean Paul Gaultier

Emma Chamberlain is one of our reigning Met Gala queens and her moody look on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet is simultaneously giving Chamberlain Coffee, "Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter, and a mythical storybook witch.

Ayo Edebiri

The Bear star Ayo Edebiri's garden gown and bright blush are the exact inspo I need for 2024.

Lea Michele in Rodarte

Lea Michele (and her baby bump!) made waves at the 2024 Met Gala — and not just because the Gleestar looks like a nymph! I love the cool effect of the blue satin, especially paired with colorful flowers.

Rebecca Ferguson in Thom Browne

I knew we'd be getting fairytales, but leave it to Dune 2's Rebecca Ferguson to take the Grimm’s approach — dark fabric, shimmery details, and ominous birds. Revered Mother is mothering!

Jennifer Lopez In Custom Schiaparelli

Jennifer Lopez' crystal dress absolutely reminds me of the grace of Swan Lake with some extra strength and edge to boot.

Sienna Miller, Chemena Kamali, Greta Gerwig, Emma Mackey and Zoe Saldana

The Barbie director went totally Oppenheimer on the Met Gala red carpet — and stepping out with Emma, Zoe, Sienna, and Chemena has me wondering if there's a new movie in the works?

Madelyn Cline in Tommy Hilfiger

Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline's Met Gala look is a beautiful, creamy take on modern fairytales, and I'm going to need her airy beauty look STAT.

Sarah Jessica Parker

And Just Like That...SJP has arrived! I love the boots, I love the lace embroidery detail, and I love the hat.
