How to Make Disney Cupcakes Like a Pastry Chef

One of the most magical parts of experiencing a Walt Disney resort is the food. Their culinary and confectionery creations exceed even our wildest dreams, and we’d be remiss to not put the spotlight on the beloved Disney cupcakes.

Since it can be tough to pack a delicately-frosted cupcake in your suitcase, we wanted to learn how we could create this perfectly-iced magic from our own kitchen. Luckily we scored some time with veteran Disney Pastry Chef Heather at Sebastian’s Bistro at the Caribbean Beach Resort at Walt Disney World.

Ahead are our tips (and Chef Heather’s!) for making your cupcakes as breathtaking as the ones you see at the House of Mouse. Our favorite? The Briar Rose Gold Unicorn Cupcake (that’s a mouthful… of deliciousness!).

Have the Right Supplies

There are several tools a Disney pastry chef has in their arsenal to add the pixie dust to an otherwise ordinary cupcake. Chief among them:

  • edible glitter, shimmer powder
  • glitter spray
  • crisp pearls in different colors
  • ice cream cones (you’ll see why)
  • chocolate rounds (because mouse ears, duh!)
  • fondant
  • melting chocolate/candy melts (for fun shapes like bows)

You’ll also want the basics . . . think, solid piping bags (though a Ziploc will do in a pinch!), piping tips, a coring knife or cupcake corer, and cupcake liners. You can get most of this (if not all of it) on Amazon, or at a local craft or baking store.

Add a Filling

Essential to all Disney cupcakes is the filling. Because why wouldn’t you want a surprise when you bite into this edible art? “Every single [Disney cupcake] is filled with something,” says Chef Heather.

You can use the same buttercream from your decorative icing (this is how the Briar Rose Gold cupcake is made — filled with the same strawberry buttercream from the top), or you can choose to fill it with a ganache, jam, or something else you have up your sleeve.

Chef Heather created a special cupcake for Mother’s Day called the “Peace & Quiet” which was filled with chocolate-cabernet ganache and topped with an aqua blue icing to create a bubble bath setting (with a wine glass, of course!). FYI, you can grab this one IRL at Walt Disney World from May 9 to May 13!

Don’t Be Intimidated by Piping

While it may look complicated, the swirled dollops of frosting (rosettes) are actually quite simple to create. All you need is a floral piping tip, and the right technique.

According to Chef Heather, the most common mistake is holding the piping bag too high up. Her fix? Use smaller portions of frosting at a time in your bag, and choke down a little bit to have more control over your design and where your icing’s going.

Then get ready to frost. The tri-color aesthetic on the Briar Rose Gold Unicorn Cupcake was simple: one had no strawberry (vanilla buttercream), one had a little, and one had… well, more! You can also add a touch of food coloring to intensify the pink color. Then alternate your rosettes to create a millennial pink menagerie.

Be Prepared to Get Messy

Part of creating these beautiful cupcakes is coming to terms with your kitchen becoming a mess of glitter, crisp pearls, frosting, and more.

When creating the Briar Rose Gold Unicorn cupcake, you’ll have to use a lot of shimmer on the chocolate discs (for the Minnie ears), and sprinkle iridescent pearls atop your mountain of buttercream.

Making these behind the scenes with Chef Heather, you can bet that we were coated in shimmer dust by the time we were done.

Add The Magic

You already know that this is what makes a Disney cupcake a Disney cupcake, don’t you? Those special, messy, finishing touches we were just talking about.

For Briar Rose Gold Unicorn, you’ll want the following:

  • ice cream cones for the unicorn horn. Push them right into the center of each of your cakes.
  • multiple chocolate discs for the ears. You can buy them premade, or make your own with melting chocolate.
  • edible glitter or shimmer powder to dust the ears (and if you want, the frosting as well!). Brush lightly across the chocolate discs to give a subtly glimmering finish.
  • iridescent crisp pearls for the finishing touch.

Et voila! You’re a confectionery mastermind now! We know we don’t have to tell you twice, but don’t forget to take a lot of pictures for the ‘gram. In your Briar Rose Gold ears if you’re feeling fancy.

Are you feeling a lack of motivation lately? Don’t worry, because things are about to change. As we near the middle of 2024, you may have let go of your New Year's resolution or neglected your past passion project. The great news is that Jupiter, the planet of optimism and expansion, is leaving the earth sign Taurus and entering the air sign Gemini on May 25. In the next stage of our journey, we will be more socially oriented and open-minded to ideas from all sides.

Everything to know about the planet Jupiter in astrology

The Planet Jupiter

Astronomically, Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in our solar system—also known as the “gas giant.” Jupiter can also be viewed as the bodyguard, protecting our home planet from incoming asteroids.

Astrologically, Jupiter bestows luck and expansive opportunities in our natal charts and transits. Due to its exuberant nature, it can over-inflate good and challenging aspects. In your darkest hour and time of need, look to your Jupiter sign as the key and clue to where you can find the silver lining. You may be in for a huge lesson and luck wherever Jupiter touches your birth chart or in transit. The teacher or guru often walks into your life around these momentous periods, and so long as you are open to learning, you, too, one day will become the teacher as well. When Does Jupiter Enter Gemini?

Jupiter in Gemini Dates: May 25, 2024 to June 9, 2025

What Does Jupiter in Gemini Mean For You?

Let’s explore this last year before we dive into what’s next. The planet Jupiter spends 12 months in every sign. From 2023 to 2024, while in Taurus, our primary focus was exploring the path of self-worth, wealth, and financial security. Although Taurus is a grounded and earthy sign, last year felt anything but because Jupiter inflates and expands on whatever it touches. Sound familiar? We experienced inflation, resulting in a rise in food prices while also becoming more indulgent and spending more on material comforts.

It could have been a challenging year regarding real estate or business ventures, as everything felt stuck because Jupiter enhances whatever it touches. With Taurus's fixed energy escalated by Jupiter’s influence, it could have already made us feel like sitting ducks with a massive credit card bill. Online shopping and retail therapy galore.

The good news is that as Jupiter shifts, we will focus on collaboration, communication, and multiple streams of opportunities. Although Jupiter is astrologically considered in a “detrimental” position with Gemini, there is a plus side when this transit occurs.

The sign of Gemini extends an outlet for us to become more experimental in our lives. It can be a perfect time to begin that side hustle you were contemplating alongside your job. This is the period to “explore,” not invest. Jupiter in Gemini will give us fun, exploration, and opportunity. Our social calendars are also expected to erupt, and it's time to party.

It is about openness and possibility – refrain from dogmatic systems to stay afloat.

Note that Jupiter last appeared in Gemini in 2012. Reflect on what happened in your life then and for the collective to see what themes may be resurfacing.

Meanwhile, if you have a mutable rising sign or are a mutable sign – Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces – Jupiter in Gemini will light up your year.

What Happened 12 Years Ago When Jupiter Was in Gemini?

The last time when Jupiter was in Gemini, pop culture was electrifying with the rise of K-Pop, and Kim and Kanye got together, birthing their ship name ‘Kimye.’ We can expect bands to reemerge as Gemini is about interconnectedness and teamwork. Life was more collaborative and filled with incoming messages from all sides.

Information can get a bit scattered as Gemini represents messages and experimentation. So, it is best to slow down and listen intently before jumping into the next big thing.

It was also the year Taylor Swift released her Red album while dating Harry Styles. FYI, Taylor is a Sagittarius, and we will likely receive big news later this year. Here's a little cosmic intel: Jupiter will trine her North Node in Aquarius in September, opening a door for her to explore her story even deeper. It can push her to tap into a wellspring of creativity while she uncovers a new approach involving her talents. It will likely attract incredible breakthroughs involving personal development and destiny. Could it be a marriage proposal? Shift in love status? Album drop? Time will tell.

While we wait and see what happens, listen to The Tortured Poets Department. I’m a big fan of this one.

Stomach problems are never fun, but they seem to be even less so when you're in the middle of a travel day. Ironically, that's also when they tend to flare up! We're all swapping spring break for summer vacation soon, which is why I talked to digestive health dietitian Alyssa Simpson RDN, CGN, CLT and The Points Guy travel experts Ellie Nan Storckand Caroline Tanner for all the secrets, insights, and hacks that will make your travel smoother (and less painful) than ever.

Why do I always have stomach issues when traveling?

Image via Jason Toevs/Pexels

Routine can benefit our mental health, but it also benefits our physical health, too! "Stomach problems tend to flare up while traveling because our usual routines, like mealtimes and sleep patterns, get thrown off, which can disrupt digestion," Simpson says. "Plus, not drinking enough water and trying new foods or eating at odd hours can make matters worse by dehydrating us and upsetting our stomachs.

"Travel anxiety significantly affects our stomachs," she continues. "When we're anxious, our bodies release stress hormones that can disrupt digestion, potentially worsening existing gastrointestinal problems or causing new ones."

And it turns out, flying itself can also affect your gut physically. "Flying or changes in altitude can make your stomach uncomfortable by making the gas in your intestines expand, causing bloating," Simpson says. "Also, the difference in cabin pressure and oxygen levels can dehydrate you, which might worsen digestion and existing stomach problems."

How do you fix travelers stomach?

Image via RDNE Stock project/Pexels

While travel day stomach problems can take you by surprise, there are a few you can do in the moment to help ease discomfort. "As a traveler with a colon disease and dietary restrictions, I always have Tylenol and digestive enzymes on hand," Tanner says. "Whenever I arrive at my destination, I try to locate the nearest juice/smoothie place to maintain the daily habits that make me feel my best at home."

"I usually bring Dramamine with me just in case I experience a rare bout of nausea, and I've recently been taking 1 teaspoon of digestive bitters before meals to help with heartburn (cute, right?) — they come in really small bottles so they're generally fine to go through security," Storck says. "The day before a long flight, I try to eat whole non-processed foods — nothing that could upset my stomach — and lots of water. I try not to drink on the plane if my stomach feels sensitive (otherwise, a glass of red helps me sleep!)"

You'll also want to be aware of dehydration on your travel day (dehydration makes everything feel worse), and that includes what kind of water you're drinking. "For those with sensitive stomachs, it's a good idea to go for bottled or filtered water while traveling because tap water safety can differ from place to place," Simpson says. "Opting for bottled water helps lower the chance of drinking contaminated water and reduces the risk of health problems."

"It's smart to be careful when sampling new foods while traveling to prevent stomach issues," Simpson continues. "Stick to dishes you're familiar with and that are fully-cooked, and avoid street food in places where cleanliness might be a concern. Also, keep an eye out for any potential allergens or foods that might not agree with you."

How to make travel easier?

Image via Brit + Co

Your travel day should actually start before you wake up. Just like meal prepping can set you up for an easy week of eats, travel prepping can ensure your day-of journey goes as smooth as possible. While you can't control flight delays or traffic, there are a few things you can add into your routine.

"Include stress-relief techniques in your plan and feel reassured that you have strategies in place to prevent travel-related anxiety from causing stomach issues," Simpson says. Try our Best Breathing Techniques and Daily Journal Prompts when you have a moment to spare!

"I definitely pack the day before and try to make my carry-on bag really organized (for example, I put all my chargers in a small pouch so that there aren't wires getting tangled, I pack snacks so that I don't have to spend a ton of money at the airport, etc.)," Storck says. "I also download shows or movies on to my iPad beforehand (or pack a good book) — I like having something to look forward to if it's a long flight! Simple things, but they help the day go smoothly."

"I try to plan in advance as much as possible to alleviate travel prep and travel day stress [and] I make a list of items I want to pack on my phone," Tanner says. In addition to packing plenty of snacks that are easy on her stomach, she also figures out what to eat when she gets to her location. "Depending on my flight time, I will pick up a Sweetgreen salad to eat on the plane to keep me satiated and full of greens until I can find my next whole foods meal."

Should I pack anything specific to avoid stomach problems?

Image via Brit + Co

It's a good idea to have natural remedies or over the counter medicine in the event you need to ease bloating or discomfort (think antidiarrheals, laxatives, or antacids). "Bring along essentials like enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules or activated charcoal tablets for bloating and discomfort, antacids for heartburn and acid reflux, and magnesium citrate or magnesium oxide supplements if you're prone to constipation," Simpson says.

"You might also want to pack dandelion or fennel tea for digestive support and hydration tablets or powders to prevent dehydration, especially in hot climates," she continues. "Just remember to check in with a healthcare professional before trying any new remedies, especially if you have existing health conditions or are taking medications."

And to make the travel in and of itself more enjoyable, Storck has a few travel must-haves: "Headphones, comfortable clothing (big fan of black leggings, sneakers and a sweater; I'll never be a fancy plane outfit girl) and my water bottle." Tanner's must-haves include a portable phone charger, headphones, eye patches, and sunscreen.

How to eat in moderation on vacation?

Image via Diana Titenko/Pexels

We're big fans of Little Treat Culture at Brit + Co, especially if you're somewhere you've never been before. I mean, how could you visit Paris and NOT buy pastries?! Even if you have a sensitive stomach, Simpson says it's okay to indulge — as long as it's in moderation.

"Indulge in local delicacies moderately, savoring each bite and paying attention to your body's hunger and fullness signals," Simpson recommends. "Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your meals to offset any extra calories from treats and to keep you feeling full and satisfied. Also, incorporate physical activities into your plans to burn off any additional calories consumed from indulgences."

"To avoid stomach issues while traveling, steer clear of spicy, fatty, and greasy foods," Simpson continues. "Additionally, limit alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks, and ensure fruits and vegetables are thoroughly washed to prevent food-related illnesses. Lastly, maintain regular meal times to prevent overeating and refrain from skipping meals."

If you do deal with the dreaded traveler's stomach (it happens to us all!) swap your fancy meals for a few tried-and-true foods. "If you're dealing with stomach issues while traveling, stick to gentle foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast to soothe discomfort, and steer clear of foods that might worsen your symptoms," Simpson says. "Keep yourself hydrated, take time to rest and recuperate, and try relaxation methods like deep breathing or meditation to ease stress-related digestive problems. If your symptoms persist or become severe, don't hesitate to seek medical help."

Make sure to check with your healthcare professionals before trying new medication or making a major lifestyle change. Let us know your best hack for stomach problems in the comments and check out our weekend newsletter for more health tips and expert advice!

After a season of adventure, heartache, and lots of father-daughter bonding, we're ready to return to the world of HBO's The Last of Us. So is the rest of the internet apparently, considering "The Last of Us season 2" has almost six billion results on Google. Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the show immediately started making headlines after its pilot episode, and had a viewership increase of 75 percent by the finale. The series also went on to score three Emmy nominations and a SAG Award for Pedro Pascal as Joel!

Season 2 is sure to be just as compelling as the original season, but only time will tell whether we'll see new plotlines and character arcs, or the timeline arranged in a different way. I know for sure that whatever Craig Mazin and the rest of the team decide to do will make me cry. If you have as many questions about the second season as we do, keep reading for everything you need to know before the series returns to HBO.

Your First Look At The Last Of Us Season 2

Image via HBO

The first look at Bella Ramsey as Ellie shows the teen still rocks her beanie + puffer combo, but you can tell she has much more grit and determination than we saw last season (which, TBH, is hard to believe).

Image via HBO

The first look at Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller already has fans crying because the framing and Joel's outfit look very similar to an emotional scene from the game. Plus, I think we're just ready to see our favorites onscreen again!

"Cries in long hair Joel Miller," one X user tweeted.

"All the set photos and officially released photos from The Last of Us Season 2 are making me so f-ckin happy, I can’t wait to get traumatized again," another said.

When will The Last of Us season 2 premiere?

Image via Liane Hentscher/HBO

The Last of Us season 2 is set to begin filming in February 12, 2024, Craig Mazin tells Variety. HBO confirmed on Wednesday, May 15 that it would premiere in 2025.

Who's in The Last of Us season 2 cast?

Image via Hulu

The Last of Us will see Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal returning to our screens, but they'll also be joined by Kaitlyn Dever in the role of Abby. This is the one role fans have been waiting for — she plays a huge role in the second game and the fact that she's in the second season of the series shows that the action, drama, and suspense is only going to get crazier from here on out.

It was also announced that Isabela Merced will star as Dina and Young Mazino will star as Jesse. Argylle star Catherine O'Hara has reportedly been cast in a role created just for the TV show.

Will The Last of Us season 2 follow the plot of the game?

Image via Liane Hentscher/HBO

Showrunner Craig Mazin told EW that the new season "will be different just as this season was different [from the original game]."

Bella Ramsey also weighed in on the changes between The Last of Us season 2 and its first season, telling Vanity Fair that "it’s really a story about revenge and a continuation from the first season about the dangers of unconditional love." I know that The Last of Us: Part II is all about revenge, but we still don't know just how much of the game will be used in the show.

“I think that they’re always going to find ways to build on the incredible source material that they have, and surprise us with how they can use that material in a different format like a television show," Pedro Pascal tells Deadline. "But I wouldn’t want to spoil it for anybody, and the truth is, I don’t actually have all of the information as of [January 2024].”

Will the time jump between games play a role in the series? Will the end of season 2 line up with the beginning of the game? We'll have to wait and see!

Will there be season 2 of Last of Us?

Image via Liane Hentscher/HBO

Yes, there will be a season 2 of The Last of Us. The show was renewed after only its second episode ever! Right now there are only two games, so we'll have to see if we end up getting a season 3.

What is The Last of Us about?

Image via Liane Hentscher/HBO

The first season of The Last of Us follows Joel (played by Pedro Pascal), who lives in Boston 20 years after a fungal outbreak leads to the end of the world. When a plan to save his brother goes sideways, Joel finds himself smuggling teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the country.

Where will The Last of Us season 2 film?

Image via Liane Hentscher/HBO

After the first season filmed in places like Calgary, Alberta, Deadline announced on March 31 that The Last of Us season 2 will shoot in Vancouver.

Where can I watch The Last of Us?

Image via Liane Hentscher/HBO

You can watch the first nine episodes of the show on Max. We're hoping we also get nine The Last of Us season 2 episodes — if not more!

Is Bella Ramsey in season 2?

Image via Liane Hentscher/HBO

Yes, Bella will return as Ellie for The Last of Us season 2. "The only way we would ever, ever consider re-casting Bella is if [they] said, 'I don't want to work with you guys anymore,'" Neil Druckmann (the game's creator) tells EW. "And even then, we're not sure we would grant [them] that. We might still force [them] to come back to season 2."

Ellie is 19 years old in The Last of Us: Part II, so it's safe to assume she'll be 19 in The Last of Us season 2!

Why is Ellie immune?

According to Firefly leader Marlene in the season one finale, they believe Ellie is immune because her mother was infected before she could cut the umbilical cord. So, Ellie has had cordyceps with her since birth — meaning her immune system overrides any potential infection.

Your First Look At The Last Of Us Season 2 Cast

We got our first look at The Last of Us season 2 cast when they dined at Vancouver restaurant Zarak. "Us 🤝🏼 The Last of Us," the establishment says in an Instagram post on January 24. "It was our pleasure hosting you last night." While Pedro Pascal wasn't at dinner, Bella Ramsey, creator Craig Mazin, producer Jacqueline Lesko, and newcomers Isabela Merced and Young Mazino were in attendance! Since Bella's Ellie, Isabela's Dina, and Young's Jesse are all super close in the story, some pre-production bonding sounds like the perfect way to start off season 2.

If you're a classic romance girl who craves a little spice — I'm looking at you, Bridgerton fans — then Christina Lauren's The Paradise Problemis everything you need. I thought I was hooked on romantasy books, but I think this book has coaxed me right back over to the more traditional romance side — and I mean who can really have too much of either type of romance anyway, right?

But before I dig into all things The Paradise Problem, it's important to be clear up one thing: Christina Lauren isn't just one author like I initially thought. The two women responsible for bringing the world 30 romance novels are absolute powerhouses who also happen to be best friends: Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings. I know — this news alone seems like it deserves it's own summer novel. Since they don't have plans to do that, we at least get to have their unified essence in the books they've written and in this lovely interview.

It goes without saying, but The Paradise Problem is the perfect way to celebrate Christina Lauren's successful romance empire. Of their newest title, Christina and Lauren feel great about it being in the world. "This one is really fun so it's like going out and just celebrating. We're not worried," Lauren says with a smile. Confidence; I love it!

Ahead, learn more about how they birthed Christina Lauren and created the characters you'll come to love in The Paradise Problem.

Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings

I know besties when I see them, and this writing duo has all the makings of two friends whose bond has been deepened by more than time. Still, curiosity get's the best of me when I mention what certainly feels like an empire to me before asking, "How did you two meet?" Their knowing smile says it all — they've clearly been locked in for a while, and they remember the exact moment things clicked for them.

"In 2009 we were both writing fanfiction and reading each other's stories online. Then Lo (Lauren) was putting on a panel at San Diego Comic Con on fanworks and she invited me to be on it. So, I came out and we met for the first time, and we got along really well," says Christina.

From there, they wrote a one shot — quick fanfiction story — together, and eventually decided it was worth taking a chance on writing an entire book. The fact that both Christina and Lauren have experience writing fanfiction not only helped them prepare for their pivot into authorship, but it also got them accustomed to the honesty of online book reviews.

As far as people not knowing that Christina Lauren is actually two people, that's basically the point. "We want it [our books] to feel like they're written by one voice. We spend a lot of time editing to make sure it doesn't sound feel like two very distinct, combative voices in there," Lauren says while excitedly adding, "I mean everyday we get DM's that are like, 'I didn't know there were two of you!'"

Peeling Back the Layers of The Paradise Problem

Warning: May contain some spoilers.

I have a deep appreciation for books that immediately call my imagination to the forefront and that's just one of the many things The Paradise Problem does as soon as you begin reading the first page. We're immediately introduced to Anna Green and "West" going their separate ways after choosing to amicably end their marriage. The kicker? See, they don't actually know each other.

How can two people essentially be strangers while they're married? Realistically, Anna and West's marriage was one of convenience. Each found themselves in a situation where their very survival relied on marriage, so they decided to become husband and wife solely on paper.

That seems pretty straightforward right? Wrong. Based on the first impressions of Anna and West, one has it together while the other is a hot mess. But, Christina Lauren is challenging us to rethink our approach to first impressions because they're not always everything. Once you start peeling back a person's layers, you can really start to understand their choices, reactions, family dynamics (and there are plenty of awkward encounters in this story on that front), and more.

Christina and Lauren knew what they wanted for these two characters in the end, but they had to figure out how to fully thread the needle for it to work — particularly when it came to West and his relationship to his family. They had his backstory, but they needed to figure out how to fully flesh out his world, parents and all. What they went with was jaw-dropping IMO, full of shady behavior, cocky attitudes, and beyond. But how does West's background and personality relate to Anna's?

"We always try to think about who's the perfect person for the characters — not who will complete them. Anna is very different. She does not come from a wealthy background, she's not super polished," says Lauren. But, there's more to her than meets the eye. She's a genuinely good person who has a loving heart that no amount of status can compete with once the layers are peeled back.

This is what begins winning West over, and the two soon begin to find there's some truth to the fictionalized relationship they have on display for West's family. Ultimately, The Paradise Problem begs readers to ask if opposites really do attract, confronting us — and our main characters — with this one scenario at a time.

In my humble opinion, The Paradise Problem feels like one of Christina Lauren's best books because it encompasses all the elements that fans of their work love. Christina says, "They love characters they either want to be or want to be friends with, heroes they want for their own, a lot of the settings..." She continues, saying, "The great thing about having a large catalogue of books is that there's something for everyone. Do you like funny books? We got you. Do you want super saucy books? We got you. Do you want something that's gonna rip your heart out? We got that too."
