Morning Buzz! Stranger Things Wins Best Show and Their Speech Will Remind You Why You Love Them So Much + More

The Stranger Things kids make us sob and 13 Reasons Why makes things official for season two in this morning’s top news items. Check those and more out below in Monday’s Morning Buzz!

1. Stranger Things is the first show to win the Best Show award on the previously named MTV Movie Awards, now of course known as the MTV Movie and TV Awards. When receiving the top honor of the night, Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, thanked the shows creators for treating the young cast “like true collaborators and not just little kids.” SOB. As if the heart-tugging (and adorable!) speech wasn’t enough, the award was presented by the cast of 13 Reasons Why, making one of the best TV mash-ups of the year.

2. Chrissy Metz shut down body shamers with the biggest virtual eye-roll ever and it was amazing. After her appearance at the MTV Movie and TV Awards in a blood-red latex dress, the This Is Us star must have received some unnecessary remarks about her appearance, because she tweeted the most perfect clap-back reminding haters that they don’t get a say in how she feels about herself. “For the record, I wear what I want, when I want,” she wrote. “Newsflash it’s MY body. #thankstho.” DEAD.

3. 13 Reasons Why has officially been renewed for a second season. Although there have already been some pretty substantial details teased for season two, the hit (and controversial) Netflix show was just officially renewed. The news was announced with a short teaser featuring memorable locations from the first season, like the school, the coffee shop, Baker’s Drug store, the Crestmont Theatre, and more. No date has been given, but you know we’ll be the first to tell you when there is one.

4. Twitter can’t decide who’s hotter: new French president-elect Emmanuel Macron or Canadian PM Justin Trudeau. LOL. Not long after Sunday’s election projections showed a Macron victory, Twitter was ALL over this one. “Let the Macron-Trudeau fan fiction begin,” user @jaimewoo tweeted. “Justin Trudeau has called Emmanuel Macron to concede in the race for Sexiest G7 Leader,” wrote Business Insider’s Josh Barro, while the @TrudeauGoogles parody account didn’t miss a beat with a quick “is macron hotter than me.” We’ve got years to figure this one out, y’all. 5.If bonkers Oreos flavors are your thing, why not make your own? The long-awaited Firework Oreos are available in stores TODAY, and with it comes the announcement that you can choose the next flavor. Ellie Kemper came up with mango-coconut, which, WOULD, and you can enter your own idea using the #MyOreoCreation #Contest hashtags. The prize is even sweeter than the cookie: $500,000 and “unprecedented fan access to top-secret Oreo creations.” YES PLEASE. (h/t People)

6. Quote of the day: “Empathy and the ability to use your imagination should have no limits.” Emma Watson gives props to MTV for their genderless award categories at the MTV Movie and TV Awards, where she won for best actor in a movie.

What do you think of eliminating genders in award categories? Let us know @BritandCo!

As we age, our skin changes a lot. Over time, the skin loses collagen and elastin, which are essential in supporting the skin’s structure and elasticity. These changes are reflected in wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots, and loose skin, which can make applying makeup (and finding the right makeup products) all the more difficult.

DS Stories / PEXELS

Because these skincare quirks develop further as we age, the natural solution is to reach for the highest coverage foundation possible toconcealblemishes and fine lines. Board-Certified NYC Cosmetic Dermatologist, Dr. Michele Green, actually recommends people with mature skinactually shy away from those high-coverage foundations, since they can create a cakey look.

“The cakey look when using foundation on mature skin can be attributed to several factors. Often, it's due to the use of too much product, which can sit unevenly on the skin, creating a thick, unnatural appearance,” she explains. “Thicker, full-coverage foundations usually cause a cakey look. The cakey look often occurs for mature skin because the foundation gets trapped in wrinkles and fine lines.”

Cottonbro Studio / PEXELS

For a more natural look on mature, aging skin, Dr. Green says buildable foundations are the best choice since they’re more layerable, preventing any cakey-ness.

Don’t knock foundations with “anti-aging” labels, either – oftentimes, they’re formulated with beneficial moisturizing and antioxidant ingredients that actually target wrinkles, fine lines, and discoloration. Just make sure to look out for foundations containing alcohol, sulfates, parabens, and fragrances, as these ingredients can dry out the skin and cause irritation, exacerbating the look of wrinkles.

Find the top-recommended foundations for mature skin that create a natural look below!

Sephora

Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Weightless Foundation

"This foundation is a great option if your mature skin tends to be dry," says Dr. Green. "It's low-coverage and is less likely to settle into lines and wrinkles while providing buildable coverage with a natural skin look. It also includes hyaluronic acid, a humectant, for hydration, and ceramides, an emollient, to support skin barrier function."

This foundation is currently available in 26 shades for $69 at Sephora.

Bobbi Brown

Bobbi Brown Intensive Serum Foundation with SPF

"This medium- to full-coverage foundation contains antioxidants to protect skin from oxidative stress, which leads to fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. "With all the beneficial ingredients, this foundation is a great option for patients who want fuller coverage without the cakey look of other foundations."

As the best season of them all starts to set in, it’s time to prepare your skin for dryer, cooler weather. Not only do things start to dry out in the fall, the sun starts to set way earlier, which can disturb your sleep cycle, and subsequently, your skincare routine.

I’m certainly no stranger to the fall-induced skin slump – the first place that I notice takes the heat the most once fall comes around is my under eyes – I’m talkin’ bags, dryness, puffiness, and dark circles galore. If you face the same skincare quirks, you’re going to want to invest in an under eye cream that packs in some of these most effective ingredients: antioxidants, ceramides, vitamins A, C, and E, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. I also have thoroughly enjoyed eye creams with caffeine (another type of antioxidant) in them for fall to really tackle my tired, tired eyes.

Scroll on for the 8 best eye creams I love that expertly banish every kind of under eye concern, from dryness to dark circles.

Amazon

Good Weird Cold Brew Undereye

This under eye cream from Good Weird will literally make you look like you slept 12 hours. It's got my stamp of approval for sure. It's formulated with caffeine (hence the Cold Brew name), which works as an antioxidant, niacinamide, which helps fade dark circles and fight puffy under eyes, and diamond powder to smooth out and fill in fine lines. It's super easy to apply with a cooling metal tip, plus this product is fragrance-free, so it could work for any skin type – especially if your under eye area is sensitive.

Amazon

Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Crème

This eye cream is rich in vitamin C and collagen, which in combination help aid under eye darkness, dryness, and fine lines. The collagen in particular deeply hydrates the area you apply it to, which can be extremely helpful come fall and winter. The lightweight yet creamy formula boasts a "sunny yellow" color inspired by makeup artist-adored brightening banana powder, so you'll notice an instant brightening effect after applying it.

Amazon

CeraVe Eye Repair Cream

This is one of the best affordable eye creams. It retails for $9 on Amazon, which is a total steal. It's loaded with 3 different ceramides to help restore and maintain the skin’s natural barrier, as well as hyaluronic acid to deliver unbeatable moisture. The formula is substantially creamy but equally lightweight, absorbing quickly into the skin so that you can move on to doing your makeup seamlessly. A little goes a long way with this product, too, so you get more bang for your buck.

Amazon

OSEA Ocean Eyes Age-Defying Eye Serum

Even though it's not technically a cream, I've been loving this rollerball under eye serum. It definitely has more of a gel-like feel on the skin, so it'll be a great fit for you if you prefer lighter, water-based skincare products. The rollerball is noticeably soothing on my under eyes after I wake up entirely too sleepy. Osea's unique formulation of Undaria and red algae helps to brighten the delicate skin under the eyes, plus it contains plenty of hyaluronic acid and peptides to hydrate and reduce puffiness!

Amazon

e.l.f. Skin Holy Hydration! Eye Cream

Hyaluronic acid applies a nice plumping effect to the skin with this e.l.f. eye cream, aiding in puffiness under the eyes. It's also formulated with essential peptides, which refreshes dark circles and wrinkles. This eye cream comes in wildly handy in the cold fall and winter air as skin tends to dry out more. It's also certifiably 100% vegan and cruelty-free!

Amazon

Caudalie Vinoperfect Dark Circle Brightening Eye Cream

B+C editor, Haley, loves this eye cream from Caudalie. "The dark circles that used to bunch up and look sallow and translucent was suddenly taut and smooth," she writes in her review. "Any lines I had around my eyes, from crows feet to deep wrinkles, lessened significantly."

This product is clinically proven to visibly reduce all types of dark circles. It's formulated with with viniferine (targets darkness), caffeine (reduces inflammation) and niacinamide (evens fine lines) to tackle any and all under eye concerns. It's also super easy to apply to the nooks and crannies around the eyes, thanks to the unique ceramic applicator tip.

Dieux Skin

Dieux Auracle Eye Serum

Dieux is one of my favorite skincare brands, not only because their products are gorgeous, but because they're effective and gentle, too. Their Auracle eye serum tackles every under eye concern under the sun: dark circles, fine lines, wrinkles, and puffiness. The product pumps out of the bottle in the perfect proportion to cover the entire under eye area. The formula is fairly creamy, but boasts more of a light, watery feel, much like a gel or serum.

Mutha

Mutha Up All Night Eye Cream

This is one of the most effective eye creams for dark circles I've tried. Its opaque, caffeine-rich formula definitely has more of a velvety, creamy feel. It boasts pearl powder that deposits a light wash of pigment under the eyes to instantly brighten them, which is where I need the most improvement. It's definitely an investment when it comes to your skincare, but I've found that a little goes a very long way for each application. It's equally hydrating, too, thanks to inclusions of aloe vera, squalane, and lightweight oils.

Sure, they technically are grown from fungus, but that’s no reason to shy away from a 'shroom! Mushrooms are crazy versatile — set aside their many nutritional benefits (they’re immune-boosting, full of antioxidants, and packed with Vitamin D), the real magic is in their flavor. Eat them as a filling topping on salads and pizza. Serve them stuffed, sliced, grilled or fried on their own. Now a new book Cooking With Mushrooms: A Fungi Lover's Guide to the World's Most Versatile, Flavorful, Health-Boosting Ingredients by Andrea Gentl will have you eating them every night of the week. The recipes are *that* good. Here are three of our favorite from the book, plus a slew of tried-and-true mushroom recipes from our team and friends in the 'Co.

MUSHROOM FRITTATA

Excerpted from Cooking With Mushrooms: A Fungi Lover's Guide to the World's Most Versatile, Flavorful, Health-Boosting Ingredients by Andrea Gentl. Artisan Books © 2022.

SERVES 6 TO 8

  • 1 pound (455 g) fresh mushrooms, such as shiitake, oysters, maitake, or cremini
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 fresh oregano sprigs, leaves only
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) extra-virgin olive oil
  • 12 large egg
  • 1¼ cups (125 g) finely grated pecorino cheese
  • ¼ teaspoon Himalayan pink salt
  • Finely grated zest and juice of ½ lemon, preferably organic
  • Fragrant fresh herbs, such as parsley, mint, and oregano, for garnish

My grandmother, an American-born Puglian, cooked in the manner of cucina povera, which she learned from her mother. This included a ton of vegetables, herbs, spicy dried chiles, and eggs. Frittatas made their way to our table for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, sometimes herby one with oregano and mint, or a pile of leftover pasta, other times filled with slow-cooked, delightfully mushy broccoli rabe, and often a mushroom frittata, usually made with cremini. Like a combination of shiitake and maitake. The flavor is extraordinary—rich, earthy, and a little meaty without any heaviness. The key to this recipe, as with many Puglian dishes, is a nice amount of flavorful olive oil and some sharp, salty pecorino.

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. If using cremini or shiitake mushrooms, thinly slice with a mandoline or sharp knife. If using maitake or oyster, gently tear into small pieces.
  3. In a 10-inch (25 cm) nonstick ovenproof lidded skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat. When it starts to foam, add the mushrooms and oregano leaves and cook until soft and any liquid has been released, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the oil.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, 1 cup (100 g) of the pecorino, and the salt.
  5. Add the egg mixture to the pan and sprinkle the top with the remaining ¼ cup (25 g) cheese, the lemon zest, and lemon juice.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and cook until the bottom starts to brown, 5 to 10minutes. (Check the eggs by lifting the bottom with a spatula.) Once the bottom starts to brown, transfer the pan to the oven, uncovered.
  7. Bake for 5 minutes, then check to see if the top is puffing up. Cook a few minutes longer if not. The frittata is done when it starts to brown around the edges and a little bit on the top.Look for the oil bubbling up around the sides. This is totally normal. Once you remove the frittata from the oven to cool, the oil will get absorbed into the eggs, making it yummy and so delicious.
  8. Serve the frittata warm or at room temperature, garnished with fresh herbs.

SALT AND PEPPER BRICK MUSHROOMS

Excerpted from Cooking With Mushrooms: A Fungi Lover's Guide to the World's Most Versatile, Flavorful, Health-Boosting Ingredients by Andrea Gentl. Artisan Books © 2022.

SERVES 4

  • ½ teaspoon Himalayan pink salt
  • ½ teaspoon cracked black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1½ pounds (680 g) fresh mushrooms, such as oyster, maitake, lion’s mane, or portobello (one large piece or several medium pieces)
  • 2 teaspoons capers, rinsed if salt-packed
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges, for serving

In this vegetarian riff on the classic brick chicken, mushrooms are simply cooked with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper, with capers added for zing. I have used oyster, maitake, and lion’s mane—all are delicious. Each variety has a different moisture content and will release varying amounts of moisture as the mushrooms cook. I don’t keep bricks in my kitchen, but a second cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven gets the job done. The weight of the second pan compresses the mushrooms and allows a nice crunchy crust to form while keeping them juicy and tender on the inside. Once you do this a couple of times, you might start keeping bricks in your kitchen!

  1. In a small bowl, combine the salt and pepper.
  2. In a large cast-iron skillet, heat the oil over medium-low heat until it begins to shimmer.
  3. Place the mushrooms in the skillet and sprinkle with half the salt and pepper mixture and half the capers.
  4. Cover the mushrooms with a sheet of foil, folding it into a round to cover the mushrooms and fit the contours of the skillet.
  5. Place a Dutch oven or another cast-iron skillet the same size as the first one on top of the foil. With two kitchen towels or oven mitts, press down firmly on the skillet to flatten the mushrooms beneath it; the mushrooms will release moisture as they cook. Press intermittently until a nice crust has formed, 10 to 12 minutes.
  6. Flip the mushrooms over, sprinkle with the remaining salt and pepper mixture and capers, and cook the otherside the same way, weighting and pressing intermittently for about 10 minutes longer.
  7. Remove from the heat and serve hot, with lemon wedges for squeezing.

Everyday Mushroom Broth

Excerpted from Cooking With Mushrooms: A Fungi Lover's Guide to the World's Most Versatile, Flavorful, Health-Boosting Ingredients by Andrea Gentl. Artisan Books © 2022.

MAKES 10 CUPS (ABOUT 2.4L)

  • 1½ pounds (680 g) mixed fresh shiitake and cremini mushrooms
  • 5 quarts (4.7 L) water, preferably filtered
  • Himalayan pink salt (optional)

This delicious multipurpose broth is made from commonly available mushrooms and no additional aromatics. Sip on it all day or use it for any of the recipes that call for broth. After cooking and steeping, the liquid becomes a beautiful chestnut brown, with a deep earthy flavor. I make this broth without adding salt; add it later to taste, if desired.

  1. Trim and slice the shiitakes and quarter the creminis.
  2. In an 8- to 12-quart (7.6 to 11.3 L) stockpot, combine the mushrooms and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and continue to boil for 15 minutes.
  3. Reduce the heat and cook at a bare simmer for 1 hour. Remove from the heat, cover, and let steep for 3 hours, until completely cool. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing on the mushrooms (discard, or compost, the mushrooms). If you plan to sip the broth, add salt to taste. If you will be using it later for cooking, skip the salt.
  4. Transfer the broth to glass jars for storage. If freezing, leave ¾ inch(2cm) of free space at the top of the jar for expansion. Refrigerate for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 6 months.

Baldacci Vineyards

Mushroom Risotto

We love this recipe from our friends at Baldacci Vineyards too. Pair it with their fruity and dry sparkling after you cook with it!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup arborio or carnaroli rice
  • 2-3 cups chicken stock
  • ½ cup
  • 2 oz prosciutto, sliced and diced
  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced or diced
  • 1 small yellow or white onion, diced or minced•3-4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 oz parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 oz fontina cheese, grated
  • Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS

  1. Sauté mushrooms in butter until cooked thoroughly and set aside.
  2. Over low heat, add a tablespoon (or two) of olive oil, and cook onion until translucent.
  3. Add garlic and cook for another minute
  4. Turn up heat, add rice and cook for a minute or two. Be sure to stir with a spatula, so the garlic doesn't burn.
  5. Add sparkling wine.
  6. Add a cup or so of chicken stock to cover the rice. Stir regularly. When stock comes to a boil, turn heat down to low and let simmer. Continue to monitor level of stock and texture of rice. Add stock as needed.
  7. When rice is close to finished, add mushrooms and prosciutto. About a minute before risotto is done, stir in cheese until melted. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Top with a little parmesan, if you like.
  9. Plate it and serve it. Enjoy!
