What’s the Deal With My Yellow Nails?

As much as we love swapping tips and tricks to solve our biggest beauty and fashion dilemmas, there are some questions we may not feel comfortable asking our friends about, let alone Google without going incognito. Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. In this series, we’re tackling those embarrassing queries by turning to experts in the field to get you the answers you need — minus any awkward feelings.

Yellow might make for a cheery manicure color, but we can’t say the same for the sallow tinge that sometimes presents itself post-polish removal. Despite its horrifying unveiling, the beauty woe is a lot more common than you might think. Below, we found out what makes nails turn yellow and what to do about it.

What Causes Yellow Nails?

Yellow nails are typically chalked up to leaving nail polish on for too long (#beentheredonethat). And while that is sort of true, it’s not exactly the full story. “Nail yellowing usually signifies that your nails have been dyed by a harsh product,” says Gabrielle Meit, a nail technician at Chillhouse in New York City. The alleged stain could mean that you’ve kept your polish on for too long, but even short-lived manicures can leave behind a yellow tinge known to the pros as pigment migration. (Photo via Tetra Images/ Getty)

Pigment migration is a concern with yellowing nails but also polish in general, as the issue almost always comes down to the shade, not the brand. The darker, moodier hues or highly pigmented formulas can seep deep down and leave behind that yellow overlay we are all too familiar with. And get this: Removing the color may make it even worse. “Polish remover dissolves the polish and makes the pigments migrate and leach,” says Dana Stern, a board-certified dermatologist and nail health expert at Nu Skin. This doesn’t happen to everyone, though; some nails are more porous than others.

could Anything Besides Nail Polish be to Blame?

If au naturel nails are more your thing, but you still experience a slight, seemingly jaundiced tinge, the concern is worth getting checked out. Like our skin, nails can be a direct indication of what’s going on in the body; sallow-looking nails could be trying to warn you of a bigger health issue, including an incredibly rare disease known as yellow nail syndrome. Those with it “frequently lack a cuticle as well as lunula (the half moon that is usually visible on the thumbnail and great toenail). The entity is due to failure of the nail to grow sufficiently and is associated with lymphatic disease as well as lung disease of malignancy,” explains Stern. (Photo via Jamie Grill/ Getty)

In the case of toenails, fungal infections could also cause your nails to turn yellow (we don’t blame them — the thought of fungus makes us turn a funny color too). While it’s not always the case — like your fingernails, they can experience stains— it’s a good idea to have them checked out if the issue persists.

Lastly, for those who smoke or use self-tanning products on the regular, these habits could be the answer to your yellowing nails. Quitting could help fade the unwanted shade. As for self-tanner, there’s a reason some formulas come with a mitt. If you don’t have one, we suggest you Amazon Prime the St. Tropez Applicator Mitt ($7). You’re welcome in advance.

What’s The Best Way To Get Rid of Yellow Nails?

Taking a break from nail polish to prevent yellowing is one of the biggest beauty myths lurking around the internet. In theory it makes sense, but in reality your nails could just turn yellow again the next time you paint on your go-to winter shade. According to Meit, sallowness caused by nail polish can be easily avoided if you incorporate a protectant base coat into your manicure routine. Base coats are key because they provide a layer between your nail and the polish, which can “prevent polish from pooling in cracks and crevices,” says Stern.

Prevention is always great, but what the heck do you do if you already have yellow nails? “Nail polish stains can be lightened by using a dilution of hydrogen peroxide,” Stern assures. Mix three tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and one-half cup of water, then give your nails a soak in the solution for about two minutes. After that, take a nail brush and give a good yet gentle scrub and rinse with water. Repeat this regimen two or three times a week if necessary. “You can [also] use a whitening toothpaste, as these are formulated with hydrogen peroxide,” notes Stern. To give this home hack a try, apply a thin coat of the toothpaste directly to your nails and let it sit for 10 minutes. Finish the job by running a nail brush (a clean toothbrush also works) across your nailbeds, then rinsing with lukewarm water. If the yellow doesn’t subside, repeat the process a few times a week for up to a month.

If DIY remedies aren’t appealing, there are some products formulated with yellow stained nails in mind. We’re big fans of the Dr. Dana Nail Renewal System ($55). The treatment tackles all your nail care woes in one. It consists of three steps and features a prep formula made with glycolic acid as well as a priming wand that can work together to remove nail discoloration. The last step is a nourishing elixir that brushes onto the nails and cuticles for optimum hydration.

What you eat can greatly affect your skin, causing different side effects, both good and bad. Luckily, there are so many foods that can revitalize your skin and get it back to feeling radiant and looking glowy from the inside out — and just in time for summer! If you don't know where to start, we've got you covered with expert advice on all the best foods for your skin, plus all those bites you might wanna avoid.

Best Foods For Your Skin

Grapes, Strawberries, Blood Oranges, and Watermelon

Elina Fedotova of Elina Organics, says that colorful fruit are key to achieving good skin! She says, "Colorful fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, and healthy fats like butter or plant oils help improve skin immunity and protect against environmental UV damage. Liquid collagen is popular as a skin-rejuvenating food or supplement, but when you do that, make sure you are making the smoothie with collagen peptides. The collagen is broken into small pieces called peptides which absorb much better and signal your body to regenerate collagen." So clearly, collagen is vital if you want to have glowy skin.

Elina also says, "It is a scientifically proven fact that people who eat very high levels of antioxidant-rich diets with fruits and vegetables and anthocyanosides — they can stay in the sun without any protection much longer because their body can protect them naturally from UV damage." Her three rules for healthy skin?

  1. No processed foods.
  2. Eat tons of antioxidants.
  3. Use an SPF — preferably one that is a mineral Zinc Oxide based — alongside protective hats in the sun.

So not only can certain foods make your skin look radiant, they can also protecting you from the sun with proper precautions! We love to hear that!

Leafy Greens, Broccoli, Asparagus, and Edamame

Leafy greens, broccoli, asparagus, and edamame are some of our favorite foods to eat that will give you that inside-out glow. Nutritionist and wellness expert Jessica Green says, "Silica rich foods are a great place to start — these include celery, asparagus, banana, cucumber, green beans to name my favorite. When you juice some of these, they can become more bio-available. Celery juice for instance is excellent at giving your skin a beautiful natural glow. Collagen rich foods can help improve skin elasticity — bone broth is my absolute favorite for not only its skin benefit but bone broth is also very calming for the gut."

Skin elasticity can easily be improved through these foods and can make you look 10 years younger! I definitely notice a significant difference in my skin when I regularly eat collagen-rich foods than when I don't!

Avocado and Olive Oil

Avocados and olive oil are really going to up your skin game, and giving you that gorgeous glow for summer we're really looking for. Kristen White, RDN, CLT, says, "Clean fats like olive oil, avocados, coconut oil, and tallow in our diet help replenish needed vitamins and fatty acids to help skin look its vibrant best." That's exactly what we want!

In regards to olive oil, it really is the must-have when it comes to achieving a glowy complexion. Jenny Jiles, a holistic nutritionist says, "Olive oil is the GOAT. We know why all of those women in the Mediterranean look so vibrant and sexy as they age, because olive oil is such a staple in their diet. Don’t be afraid of this healthy fat, it’s filled with antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids which help protect your skin from free radicals to reduce those fine lines and help you glow from the inside out. Add olive oil to any and all of your meals, savory or sweet (yes, trust me on that)." So I guess the key to looking like an Italian goddess this summer (and always) is olive oil!

Chia, Flax Seeds, and Sunflower Seeds

Many seeds and grains are going to be crucial in giving you radiant skin. Plus, they have so many healing properties that can help reduce redness and inflammation in the skin. Christine Glaser, CEO of DIY Skincare Business, says, "Chia and flax seeds are also helpful for all skin types and can aid in toxin removal." And sunflower seeds actually have antibacterial properties too that help get rid of toxins in order to keep your skin looking fresh and clear; thus the radiant skin we're trying to achieve here!

Red Bell Peppers, Carrot, and Tomatoes

You always want to have a variety of colors when eating fruits and vegetables because this will help you get the most out of your diet and achieve maximum radiance. A health expert and dietician, Chrissy Arsenault of Kori, says, "Eat lots of fruits and veggies. Choose 2-3 colors of fruits and veggies at every meal – fruits and veggies are rich in antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E) that protect your skin from damage." And tomatoes, carrots, and bell peppers are very rich in color so they will give you so many great nutritional benefits that will assist in giving you a perfect inside-out glow!

What foods should I avoid for my skin?

If you want radiant, clear, acne-free skin then you definitely want to avoid foods high in dairy or sugar. Jessica Green says, "When it comes to foods to avoid for radiant skin, sugar and dairy float to the top. Both are inflammatory. Sugar causes glycation which damages the skin's elasticity. Dairy (cow dairy specifically) tends to be one of the most common foods that cause reactions for people including acne and puffiness." I'm definitely taking note to try and cut our these foods now!

Makeup can be our friend, but it can also be our foe. Sure, the products that you reach for to enhance your features can be transformative in a positive way...unless you’re not using them correctly. Chances are if you’ve been using the same products or following the same practices for years, your routine is likely outdated. In turn, this can contribute to your skin looking cakey, wrinkles and fine lines appearing more prominent, eyes looking hollowed out; the list goes on.

Changing up a tried and true beauty routine can feel daunting, so we wanted to help alleviate any feeling of stress; especially when it comes to something as fun as putting on makeup! Your makeup should work for you, and if applied in the right way it can even make you look younger. To get the full scoop on the best makeup practices, we chatted with Erica Taylor, an extremely experienced professional makeup artist with over 26 years of experience in the industry.

Erica’s advice commands a large audience — in 2021 she started sharing her makeup tips and techniques for any age on her social media and has quickly become a trusted expert and has since harnessed over 1.5 million followers on TikTok. Below Taylor walked us through prepping the skin, to the final touches, all while keeping the end goal of a youthful appearance in mind. Growing older is a gift that should be celebrated and Erica’s advice not only recognized that idea but fully embraced it as well.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate

Image via Sephora

“As we mature we have to exfoliate more due to our skin not turning over as quickly as it did years ago which leaves our skin more dry, textural, and lackluster,” says Taylor. When we neglect exfoliation in our skincare routine, this can contribute to makeup not blending smoothly into the face and appearing flakey. However, it’s important to avoid any exfoliating products with harsh formulas that can damage the skin barrier. A gentle exfoliant that’s great for everyday use is Dermalogica's Mini Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator which starts as a dry rice-based powder and develops into a smooth, foamy texture when activated with water.

Choose Your Skincare Routine Wisely

Image via Sephora

“Layering in serums and oils can make a major improvement in our skin prep as we mature,” shared Taylor. “Your makeup can only look as good as your skin prep.” Serums can be a splurge item, but our favorite anti-aging regenerating option from Olay can be snagged from the drugstore for under $30 and applied morning and night for an extra surge of hydration. As for oil, Herbivore’s $15 Botanicals Phoenix facial oil uses rosehip, CoQ10, and botanical extracts to provide hydrating and anti-aging properties to dry, mature skin types.

Your Primer Matters

Image via Sephora

“Opt for a hydrating primer versus a mattifying or silicone face primer,” Taylor says. Our favorite is clean beauty brand, MILK Makeup’s, Hydro Grip primer which utilizes niacinamide and hyaluronic acid for extra hydration and all-day makeup stay.

Switch To A Fluid Foundation

Image via Sephora

Taylor shared that when it comes to using makeup to look younger, “liquid or cream foundations are preferred over powder or matte foundations.” By using a liquid formula, you’ll avoid a makeup base that emphasizes fine lines. Although it only offers light coverage, the Tinted Cover from NUDESTIX glides onto the skin smoothly without creasing to provide an even skin tone and a flawless natural makeup finish.

Reach For A Cream Blush

Image via Sephora

“Consider switching to a cream blush with a higher placement to illuminate and lift cheeks,” says Taylor. She also offered that “one of [her] favorite cream blushes is the Kulfi Mehndi Moment Long-Wear cream clean blush in [the shade] Pinky Promise for a natural, lifted look.”

Creamy Textures Are Favored

Image via Sephora

If you’re hoping to hide dark spots, concealer likely has a permanent spot in your makeup bag. However, something to take into account when using this product is that it has a texture creamy enough that it won’t settle into lines. “Always check the texture on the back of your hand before purchasing,” advised Taylor. “When choosing concealers, going too light can accentuate under-eye issues - opt for a more direct match to your skin for the most natural look.” Erica’s current favorite crease-proof hydrating concealer is the Kulfi Main Match.

Choose A Lipstick That Sticks

Image via Sephora

Lipstick that bleeds away from where you want it to stay can be a problem especially heighten for those with fine lines around their mouth area. To combat this, Erica “suggests using a satin and cream lipstick that won't accentuate fine lines.” She went on to mention that lip products with a balm-like formula are great for creating a makeup look that makes you look more youthful. Taylor’s favorite is the Kulfi Heirloom Satin Lipstick, but Maybelline’s SuperStay Ink Crayon Lipstick is another affordable option that provides beautiful results.

We're still deep in Vanderpump Rulesseason 11, but any good fans know the news never stops with this spicy crew. Whether their breaking stories about Scandoval or scorching friendships and starting feuds, there's just always something to talk about. The latest goss may not be what you're thinking though — according to Page Six(and Andy Cohen himself), production is fully paused on anything related to season 12. They have their alleged reasons for halting, but here's what I think is really happening.

Why did producers pause "Vanderpump Rules" filming for season 12?

It's been a major talking point during this season and its interview cycles that cameras basically went right back up after the Scandoval news broke, and they never really went back down for a full break. According to both production and Andy Cohen himself, Page Sixreported that they ultimately decided to press pause on anything season 12-related because wanted the cast to have a break after the almost nonstop Scandoval-fueled filming last year.

Will Ariana Madix return to "Vanderpump Rules" season 12?

Image via Bravo

I honestly don't think Ariana Madix plans to return to the Vanderpump Rules cast, and here's why:

  1. She's booked and busy. Between landing a hosting gig on Love Island, wrapping up a broadway show, scoring shoe deals, writing books, and beyond...it just makes sense that maybe Ariana's outgrown this world! She started on VPRwhen she was 28 years old — a full decade later, she's just a different person with likely different goals, especially after Scandoval.
  2. There was some allegedly big friendship-altering drama at the reunion. Since they filmed, there are plenty of rumors about who's still friends and why, but one thing is for certain: nobody's talking. And while obody will spill the beans on what was said yet, even Andy Cohen confirmed the reunion was "intense." My guess is that Ariana revealed to the cast that season 11 was her last, and that it sent everyone — especially Lala Kent and Scheana Shay — into a spiral. After all, this show is everyone's job at the end of the day, and Ariana leaving could potentially impact that. Still, like I said, she's likely outgrown the entire situation.
  3. Something About Her finally opening could mean their own show. Katie Maloney and Ariana announced onWatch What Happens Live!that their long-awaited sandwich shop is set to open on May 22. It's safe to say that the girls are EAGER to eat at this shop, with Tiktoks and Tweets galore asking about the opening for a while now...so why wouldn't Katie and Ariana wanna capitalize on that even more with their own show? It's obviously all speculation, but I could definitely see this being a successful, actually interesting VPR spinoff...I'm looking at you, The Valley.
Considering all this, my guess would be that production's working hard to make things work with Ariana, or find a way to break the news easy to the rest of the cast.

Who's returning for "Vanderpump Rules" season 12?

Image via Bravo

There aren't any formal announcements of returning Vanderpump Rules cast members — especially because the current season is still on air. However, one could safely assume almost everyone would choose to return, except for Ariana and maybe Katie (because have you ever seen someone more sick of every single man's BS on one show before?!). But, I'm not sure if we're even gonna get another season of this show, TBH. Why?

  • Nobody works at Sur anymore, and it just feels like we've moved so far past the original premise (and exciting drama) of the show.
  • Lisa Vanderpump (you know, THE Vanderpump in Vanderpump Rules) is hardly on anymore, and when she is, she's saying something that's just...off. Plus, she's got the Villa to run — they're apparently casting for another season as we speak.
  • Everyone's kinda phased out of this era — they're all older, have kids, split up, etc. There's just not that much keeping them all together in this way. Some could easily phase into the travesty that's The Valley, but ultimately VPR is just maybe past it's prime.

When will "Vanderpump Rules" season 12 air?

Image via Bravo

I would have guessed we'd get the next season by mid-winter 2025 given the turnaround time of the most recent season of Vanderpump Rules, but now I'm not sure. If I had to guess, I think we could get something by fall 2025, but who knows how long this hiatus can last. Or — like I said before — if the show even returns.

Dearest gentle reader, if it were up to Lady Whistledown, the finest trend of the season would absolutely be the return of the cottagecore aesthetic. Bring on the floral dresses, ruching, and tulle because thanks to Bridgerton, we're glady welcoming cottagecore back into our current style rotation (if it ever left). Cottagecore has come and gone with the likes of period drama movies and TV shows á la Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey, and so many more. So whether you're frolicking in the English countryside, attending balls with Kings and Queens, or just simply catching up on Bridgerton season 3 from the comfort of your couch, we've got all the best dresses for the occasion that will have you looking like THE diamond of the season.

What is cottagecore?

Photo via House of CB

Cottagecore is an aesthetic or style that is inspired by "cottage living" — imagine the English countryside in the early 1900's. The clothing style is very reminiscent of a Jane Austen-inspired era with lots of feminine and flowy silhouettes. You'll notice the styles having corsets, ruffles, florals, and bows, so just think very effortlessly girly!

What are the best brands to shop for cottagecore aesthetic?

Photo via House of CB

The brands that immediately come to mind and encapsulate the "frolicking-in-the-english-countryside-while-waiting-for-your-star-crossed-lover" vibe are brands like Love Shack Fancy, House of CB, and Doen. I've personally shopped all of these and can attest that they are idyllic, gorgeous, and will have you feeling like the lead of a Bridgerton season in no time.

What should I watch to get inspired by the cottagecore aesthetic?

Photo via Netflix

Period dramas are perfect to get into this vibe, and some shows and films that I love to watch are Little Women, Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, Bridgerton(obvi), and anything from the Jane Austen-era! When you watch all of these shows, you'll get so much inspiration from the way they dress and styles they're wearing. I also love scrolling Pinterest to find inpso for what to wear in order to achieve this aesthetic!
