Anna Sui’s Top 3 Makeup Trend Predictions for 2017
“I like when something transports you to another time [and] another world,” iconic fashion designer Anna Sui tells me, and standing in her SoHo boutique in Manhattan, I know exactly what she means. We’re surrounded by black lacquered furniture, purple hand-painted walls and racks of her designs. This Victorian retro-edgy, rock ‘n’ roll Western aesthetic is synonymous with Anna Sui’s brand, and it even bleeds over into her makeup line as well — and the queen herself signs off every product in the Japanese-made cosmetics line. Here are Anna’s top 2017 makeup trend predictions.
SEPIA-TONED EVERYTHING
For her Spring/Summer 2016 NYFW show, Anna decided to forgo the traditional color palette. “I wanted them to look like an old photograph,” she tells me. Ditch the corals and pinks next spring, and opt for “a dark sepia burgundy” for your lippie.
To achieve this look, you can try Anna Sui’s Vivid Lipstick ($30) in Wine Red. This hue will help you nail that burgundy/sepia trend — and it just so happens to be the shade that Anna won’t leave her house without!
And to keep the look consistent, you won’t want a bright pink blush. Rather, go for a deeper rouge on your cheeks — like Anna’s gorgeously packaged Rose Cheek Color ($36) in Bright Red.
To really channel an “old photograph,” you’ll want to make sure your skin looks picture perfect. Lay Pore Smoothing Primer ($25) under your foundation to help you nail the look and make your makeup last all day. Pro tip: You can even brush just a thin layer over the areas where your makeup starts to settle into your pores to help give yourself a quick airbrushing.
GLITTER
Your inner nine-year-old is going to love this one: According to Anna, glitter is back in a big, big way. “I’m a huge fan of glitter,” Anna says. “So I think glitter continues [to be huge]. Everyone’s wearing glitter on their face these days. If you’re going out for the night, that’s a great trend.”
You can fall back into the glitter trend in a, ahem, grown-up way by wearing it on your lids! Anna Sui Satin Pearl Eye & Face Color ($12) comes in a variety of pretty, shimmery shades.
Glittery lips is another way to go. Anna’s limited edition Ring Rouge ($18) in Candy Pink does double duty as a chic statement ring AND a pot of lip gloss.
MORE CAT EYE EYELINER
While for a while, the naked eye was very much en vogue, it’s time to pick up that eyeliner pencil/pen/brush again. “Eyeliner,” Anna says, “that’s something every woman loves because it just makes you instantly more glamorous.” More cat eye? “Yes,” she says with emphasis. “I think so!”
When it comes to mastering the cat eye, the liquid liner is a favorite choice. Not only do you get the sharp, sleek lines, but the color is often more pigmented than pencil. Anna’s Liquid Liner ($27) comes in three fun shades: True Black, Anna Purple and Golden Brown.
If gel liner is more your style, Anna’s Gel Eye Liner ($25) is a no-smudge, won’t-budge option.
