This New App Helps People of Color Achieve Makeup Haul Perfection
When you’re a person of color, buying makeup can be a challenge and a half. Sure there are loads and loads of shades out there, but which ones are right for your skin tone and won’t make you look ashy or washed out? That’s where this amazing app, Cocoa Swatches, comes in.
Cocoa Swatches combines makeup swatches, product comparisons, beauty tutorials, makeup inspiration and a discussion board in one handy dandy, portable app that takes a lot of the stress — and the trial and error — out of shopping for makeup.
The enterprise began as an Instagram account where founder Okunne Okwudiafor would post and repost makeup swatches on darker skin complexions. Her follower account quickly blossomed, and Okunne decided to turn Cocoa Swatches into a brand… and then an app (which is available for free on iOS and Android devices).
“As I began to learn more and more about the beauty world, it became clear that many beauty brands make it difficult for women of color, especially women with darker complexions, to make accurate purchasing decisions,” Okunne writes on the Cocoa Swatches site. “The Cocoa Swatches app is the makeup bestie you can carry in your pocket. It will help you make informed makeup purchases and let you in on what’s really good with the makeup industry.”
