Meet the New Fall Superfood You Need in Your Fridge
Kalettes are the newest thing to hit the produce stand, and we’re totally into them. A hybrid between Brussels sprouts and kale, these little bundles are crispy green with a mellow Brussels flavor. Created using traditional cross-pollination methods, farmers have definitely figured out how to get the best of both veggie worlds. They’re so cute, crunchy and versatile that Move Nourish Believe is calling them the “hippest, coolest vegetable of 2015.”
What are Kalettes?
Although they were developed by a seed company in the United Kingdom, kalettes are slowly making their way around the globe. Look for them at your local grocery store this fall. Trader Joe’s is selling them in eight-ounce bags labeled “kale sprouts.” In some places, kalettes will be available year-round, but like their other cruciferous cousins, they will be especially delish in the fall and winter months. This mighty veggie is also a superpower when it comes to health, with tons of vitamins and good-for-you fiber. The veggies are definitely a new thing, so if you can’t find them yet in your area, continue to look out for them in the coming year.
How to cook kalettes
Because of their mild flavor, kalettes are delicious raw or cooked. We love them roasted, sauteed or tossed in salads and pasta. Steaming, stir-frying or quickly microwaving are also great methods to help retain the veggie’s nutritional value. Read on for more tasty how-to ideas!
