These Women Are Going Topless for Women’s Equality Day
In case you missed it in all the National Dog Day hoopla, yesterday was also Women’s Equality Day — the day in 1920 when women earned their right to vote. One organization in particular, GoTopless.org, hasn’t forgotten: In fact, they’re just getting started! The ninth edition of their annual GoTopless Day (think #FreeTheNipple 2.0), always falls on the Sunday closest to August 26, so in this case, tomorrow.
Though it might not seem the most obvious way to pay homage to our foremothers, as the organizers of #GoTopless point out, “The right to go topless for women is based on gender equality as their right to vote once was.” Fair point.
Ladies in all cities across the world are being encouraged to stand up for women’s rights by going topless in public, and looots of events have already been organized in 56 cities, from Paris, France to Columbus, Ohio to Vancouver, Canada. In NYC, for one, where being topless is legal, there are plans to “celebrate our breasts with pride!” with a parade, which will begin at Columbus Circle and march to Bryant Park.
The movement even has its own anthem performed by Slovakian singer Gabriela Dolanska and titled “Go Topless Go” that gives James Corden and Cyndi Lauper’s #Girlboss anthem a run for its money.
You can watch Gabriela’s uncensored music video above and listen to her belting out powerful lyrics, like “I shouldn’t have to hide; it’s up to me to decide,” while you decide if you’d like to take part in GoTopless Day 2016!
While no famous faces are confirmed to join the movement, we can totally see Chrissy Teigen (who was SO on board for Free the Nipple), Rihanna and O.G. Lil’ Kim getting on board with this, as well: Guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
