6 Signs You May Be Eating Too Much Sugar

Let's face it, sugar is delicious and unavoidable! It's in everything from our morning java to our "healthy" salad dressings, to say nothing of the obvious and delicious culprits like cookies and ice cream. But as much as we love that sugary goodness, too much of a good thing can turn into a not-so-good thing pretty quickly. We all know that cutting back on sugar is a good idea, but how do you even know if you're overdoing it in the first place? Sometimes, the signs are subtle, like a mischievous little imp hiding in your pantry. Other times, they hit you over the head with a two-by-four, usually after you've polished off a family-sized bag of gummy bears. So, if you've been feeling a little off and suspect your sweet tooth might be running the show, here are some tell-tale signs that your sugar intake might need to be decreased.

Scroll to see the 6 clear symptoms that prove you're eating too much sugar...

1. Constant Energy Crashes and Sluggishness

Do you feel like you're on an energy roller coaster? A quick burst after a sugary snack, followed by an inevitable plummet into a sluggish, can't-keep-my-eyes-open slump? This is a classic sign of too much sugar. When you consume a lot of sugar, your blood sugar spikes, and then your body releases a surge of insulin to bring it down, often too fast. This rapid drop in blood sugar leaves you feeling tired, irritable, and craving more sugar to get that quick pick-me-up. It's a vicious cycle that can leave you feeling edgy and drained all day long. How dare something so sweet betray us!

2. Unexplained Weight Gain

Sugar, especially in its refined forms, is often high in calories and offers little to no nutritional value. Rude! When your body takes in more sugar than it can use immediately, it stores the rest as fat. This is particularly true for fructose, a common sugar found in many processed foods and sugary drinks, which is primarily metabolized by the liver and can be easily converted to fat. If you're consistently gaining weight, particularly around your tummy, and you can't pinpoint another reason, your sugar intake might be the culprit.

3. Frequent Sugar Cravings

This one might seem obvious, but it's worth highlighting. The more sugar you eat, the more your body craves it. Like the sheriff of my tiny college town once said about crack cocaine, "it makes your body say -- I WANT IT!" Sugar activates the reward centers in your brain, leading to a temporary feeling of pleasure-- keyword there is temporary! Over time, your brain can become accustomed to this sugar "hit," creating a dependency. Suppose you find yourself constantly reaching for something sweet, even after a meal. In that case, it's a strong indicator that your body has developed a sugar craving, suggesting you're probably consuming too much of it. Sure, it's not crack cocaine, but it's addictive too.

4. Skin Breakouts and Dull Complexion

Sugar can contribute to inflammation in the body, and this can show up on your skin. High sugar intake can lead to increased insulin production, which in turn can stimulate oil glands and contribute to acne. If you're experiencing more breakouts than usual, or if your skin looks dull, inflamed, or simply isn't as clear as it can be, reducing your sugar intake could make a noticeable difference.

5. Increased Thirst and Frequent Urination

If you're constantly feeling thirsty and making more trips to the bathroom than usual, it could be a sign that your body is trying to flush out excess sugar. When there's too much glucose in your bloodstream, your kidneys work overtime to filter it out, pulling water from your body in the process. While these can also be symptoms of more serious conditions, if combined with other signs on this list, it's worth considering your sugar consumption.

6. Digestive Issues like Bloating and Gas

The sugar you eat can feed the harmful bacteria in your gut. An imbalance of gut bacteria can lead to a variety of digestive problems, including bloating, gas, and even changes in bowel habits. If you're experiencing chronic digestive discomfort, and you suspect your diet is playing a role, sugar might be a key factor contributing to the imbalance in your gut microbiome.
