Caitlyn Jenner is by far the most famous face in the transgender community at the moment, with Laverne Cox a close second, but they won’t be the only two people who come to mind for long. With the combination of Caitlyn’s coming out + the #TransIsBeautiful movement, the trans community has been gaining its long overdue time in the spotlight, especially in the modeling world. From Hari Neff getting signed by IMG to Andreja Pejić’s Makeup Forever campaign + even Aydian Dowling’s potential Men’s Health cover, trans models are having more than a moment. That’s becoming abundantly clearer as a Thailand-based modeling agency is working to bring even more varied faces to the public’s eye.
Apple Model Management is opening up an LA office this summer that will solely represent transgender men + women models, making it the first all-trans modeling agency in the world. In November 2014 the agency was the first to create a trans division at its Thailand HQ. Now it’s coming to America to increase the visibility of trans models and diversify the modeling world at the same time. With six trans women already on its roster, the agency is scouting additional male and female models, and hopefuls can even apply through Apple Model’s website.
“We see trans individuals as beautiful,” LA agency director Cecilio Asuncion told The Advocate. “Our strong commitment to developing them as successful models is never about quantifying or qualifying their gender. It’s never a question of if they are women or men, it’s about their passion and commitment to being the best possible models they can be.”
This is definitely the start of a bigger movement toward more diversity in modeling and we’re all about it.
