An Expert Tells Us Why We’re All Obsessed With Astrology

It’s true — we’re astrology-obsessed. From horoscopes to natal charts, we’ve become completely fascinated with the cosmic clarity astrology can bring to our lives. And while the ancient art has been around forever, it seems like it’s only been in the last few years that we’ve embraced astrology as a serious method for seeking spiritual guidance. We were curious about this shift in perspective, so we sat down with managing editor and in-house astrologer for Astrology.com, Narayana Montufar, to chat about her experience as a professional astrologer, the surprising results of a recent study her team conducted, and why this generation is more willing than ever to explore new spiritual horizons.

Brit + Co: It seems like over the course of the last few years, there’s been a collective shift in spiritual perspective and interest in astrology is at its peak — why do you think this is?

Narayana Montufar: You are so right about that collective shift! When I think about it, it gives me goosebumps. What’s even more interesting is that it’s really younger generations of Americans — particularly women — who feel that spirituality is more important to their daily lives than traditional, organized religion. In my experience, what people are looking for and what they’re gaining are one and the same. It’s freedom to make their own decisions. It’s independence from a stifling way of thinking. Because astrology is something that’s more personalized — it’s YOUR specific sun sign and moon signs, and it’s where the planets were aligned when you came into the world — there’s an innate intimacy there. People can experience it and say to themselves, “this is mine and mine alone.”

B+C: We read Astrology.com recently conducted a survey to better understand this cultural shift to spirituality. Can you talk a little about what you found out?

NM: We, along with our sister brand Keen (and an accredited research firm) conducted a research study of 1,000 American adults who were 18 years or older to understand if and why people were choosing to practice spirituality over traditional religion. We found that three in four young Americans (roughly 77 percent of folks) are more inclined to dive into astrology, read their horoscopes, use crystals, or visit a spiritual advisor because of three reasons — personalization, flexibility, and increased fulfillment. There’s more room for customization when you don’t have to subscribe to a pre-determined set of beliefs rules and practices that may not fit in with modern-day culture like we did before.

B+C Why do you think millennials are the group you’ve seen turn to astrology most often?

NM: Millennials simply have a different way of approaching every aspect of their lives, from work to exercise, dating to parenting, diet to fashion. And spirituality isn’t any different. One on hand, I think that because they were raised in the digital age, they don’t feel like they have to accept long-established norms. They can push boundaries, buck trends, and see where it takes them. What that means spiritually is that it’s more accepted to visit a spiritual advisor, see a psychic, or visit a tarot reader. In fact, our study found that 42 percent read their horoscopes, 33 percent meditate regularly, and 16 percent pull tarot cards. A generation ago those weren’t even discussed. Today, there’s an app for that.

B+C: How do you like to use astrology in your day-to-day life? What are some of your favorites ways to incorporate astrology into daily living that’s fulfilling and practical?

NM: One of my favorite ways to use astrology in my daily life is watching the aspects of the moon and using them to make important decisions. As much as I can, I only try to have important meetings on days or times when the moon is having fortunate aspects. I also share a lot of moon rituals with my friends and use new moons week to start new ideas or projects and full moon weeks to declutter, clean my house, and pamper myself.

I also watch the transits of other celestial bodies in order to make use of the current influences when it comes to making travel plans, talking to someone about a difficult subject, or even socializing, and going on dates with my husband. Fortunately, there are a lot of astrologers who constantly blog about the “astrology weather,” so even if you aren’t an astrologer, you can easily find out what are the influences at play at any given time.

B+C: What would you tell someone who is curious about incorporating astrology into their spirituality practice but still feels skeptical?

NM: After being fully immersed in the astrology world since 2011, watching and tracing the constant movement of the planets, I know that having a connection to this ancient practice not only works—it’s a real thing. My best advice for someone who is curious but still skeptical would be to get a birth chart reading. That is usually the first step towards astro self-knowledge. The second step would be for them to study their birth chart and how the motion of the moon and the sun triggers it. What they find might be so exciting to the point of stimulating an interest for watching how other planets like Venus, Mars, or even Saturn affect them — that’s when things start getting endlessly mesmerizing.

May 1 is a powerful day as the love planet Venus faces the need to transform with Pluto – it will make love or self-worth feel like a pressure cooker.

Under pressure, Venus in square with Pluto can manifest as power and control issues between love and values. This is the moment to embrace change involving your desires. The split between wanting stability with Venus in Taurus and the radical energy of Pluto in Aquarius can lead to a powerful transformation in your love story while opening the path to realizing your worth. There is a part of you or the relationship itself that needs to evolve to attract a healthier outcome. Hold still, and don’t react. Just observe your environment. Take this as a sign to reevaluate your priorities in your relationship and everything else that can deflect you from living authentically.

Get ready to be “comfortably uncomfortable” because Pluto retrograde starts this week.

If you are unsettled, this Pluto retrograde phase (until October 11th) will help you see clearly what needs to be released from your trajectory to make room for positive changes. It's not a period to control or remain in harsh environments or situations. This can fall in line with unhealthy habits or relationship patterns. It's the moment to let go. Luckily, Mars will ignite that boost and positivity when this retrograde begins when it forms a sextile to Pluto on May 3rd. This phase will enable you to embrace the idea of facing the unresolved and powering through without looking back.

Real Americans by Rachel Khong

Real Americans is a beautiful story about identity, class, and more in America. It begins with Lily Chen falling in love with Matthew despite their different backgrounds. She's dealing with being an unpaid intern who's the child of someone who escaped Mao's Cultural Revolution while Matthew is the heir of a successful pharmaceutical company. Nevertheless, they somehow manage to fit together.

But, something happens in between the time they fall in love and the moment Lily's son Nick realizes his mom seems to be keeping something from him. She's never talked about his father and this has only piqued his curiosity even more.

The more he tries to find answers about his dad, the more Nick realizes there's not always a clear path to the past.

The Husbands by Holly Gramazio

What if you came home from work one day to discover you're married to a stranger and everyone knows but you? That's exactly what happens to Lauren and it confuses her because she's sure she'd remember getting married. Not only that, but she's apparently been married for a while. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

To celebrate it's 40th anniversary, Jenna Bush Hager's book club has named The House on Mango Street as it's second pick for March! It's about Esperanza Cordero's desire to define who she is outside of what her Spanish culture has chosen for her. There's moments of sheer bliss that make heart-wrenching recollections easier to stomach, but Esperanza always finds a way to embrace how these things make her who she is.

February 2024

Good Material

Good Material is the new coming-of-age novel for adults who are still trying to figure out if they're adulting properly and revolves a series of events that makes main character Andy feel like he's down on his luck. From watching the breakdown of his longterm relationship to feeling like he's not growing as a comedian, it's clear that Andy is ready to do whatever it takes to become better in the love and career departments. But, is he truly ready to learn his life's lessons and will he be prepared for what happens next?

January 2024

The Waters

December 2023

We Must Not Think of Ourselves

#ReadWithJenna announced its December pick yesterday and it's a historical novel that's sure to tug at your heartstrings. We Must Not Think of Ourselves follows Adam Paskow's journey as a Jew held captive by the Nazis. He later finds himself working alongside others who are committed to immortalizing history as it unfolds around them. The Dunkin’ Summer Menu Just Dropped – See The New Lineup Here!

Another one of my favorite coffee chains’ summer menus just dropped, and I am ready to sip away! Rumors about the Dunkin’ summer menu were introduced by foodie inside source, @markie_devo last month, and it appears they were right.

The Dunkin’ summer menu got released on May 1 (just six days prior to the rumored Starbucks summer menu drop), and it looks way too yummy. I’ll have a hard time not ordering these tasty drinks and food items! Based on the success of the Dunkin’ spring menu, the new summer menu doesn't miss.

So, as things begin to heat up, let’s take a look at the *official* Dunkin’ summer menu. Here's what to order today!

NEW! Kiwi Watermelon Refresher

You'd think that this green drink would be matcha – but nope, it's the all-new Kiwi Watermelon Refresher! Based on the name, this drink mixes kiwi and watermelon for a super fruity and fresh sip. Dunkin' Refreshers are caffeinated with green tea, too, so some of the tea brew could shine through in the flavor. This sounds too good to not order on a sunny summer's day.

NEW! Vanilla Frosted Donut Signature Latte

Available to order hot or iced, this next drink is totally new to the Dunkin' summer menu. Their 'signature' lattes are often super sweet and topped with whipped cream and drizzle. This one will take on the flavors of a classic frosted donut, with rainbow sprinkles to boot. I simply need it now!

NEW! Blueberry Donut Coffee

Also available hot or iced, I expect the rumored Blueberry Donut Coffee to taste like a blueberry donut. Blueberry cake donuts are my absolute favorite kind, so it'll be interesting to see (and taste) how this sip lives up to the OG.

Lemonade

I find it a little odd that Dunkin' doesn't already serve lemonade, but summer seems like the perfect time to start doing so! Dunkin' will be making lemonade a permanent part of their menu on May 1. The last time they had lemonade was when they began serving the Dunkin’ Lemonade Refreshers in 2021, so it appears they're bringing it back for good.

You'll be able to order it on its own or inside their regular lineup of Refreshers (pictured above) – including the new Kiwi Watermelon one!

NEW! Green Goddess Dunkin’ Wrap

Now onto the food! The Dunkin' summer menu has three new snacks slated, and the first one is this wrap. The Green Goddess Dunkin' Wrap is made from scrambled egg whites, farro, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, crumbled feta cheese, green goddess sauce, and wrapped in a green lavash. It looks highly similar to the Spinach Feta wrap on the Starbucks breakfast menu! 👀

NEW! Watermelon Burst Classic Donut

I'm not so sure about this one. Watermelon and donuts don't ever cross paths in my mind, but you never know, it could be delish! This donut is filled with a watermelon-flavored cream filling. I need it now!

Chocolate Chunk Cookie

Chocolate Chunk Cookie – looks like a classic! Like the Chocolate Chip Banana Bread on the Dunkin' spring menu, this rumored item looks like a conveniently pre-packaged easy snack to enjoy on the road or during your lunch break!

Dunkin' fans sounded off in the comments of the summer menu rumors, sharing their thoughts about the new seasonal roster when it was leaked in April 2024.

Some Dunkin' diners aren't super thrilled with the snack selection on the leaked menu.

"Watermelon donut is wild," one person wrote. "They really need to do better with their food & snacks 😒," another said.

One user is disappointed that Dunkin' isn't doing anything overly innovative with their upcoming rumored summer menu.

"So basically blueberry and vanilla flavored coffees like they’ve had all along," they wrote. "Man they are really slacking on new flavors lately. So disappointing."

On the other hand, some Dunkin' sippers are interested in the more out-there flavors.

"Kiwi Watermelon refresher and Watermelon Burst donut both sound intriguing! Not going to lie!" one user said. "This menu isn’t bad at all I am glad they are bringing Lemonade back I love it," another echoed.
