7 Tips to Avoid Holiday Burnout This Season

Schedules and consistency easily go out the frost-covered window once you start feeling the holiday spirit. When you’re in the thick of planning holiday parties, shopping for the perfect gifts for everyone on your list, and turning your home into a cozy winter wonderland with a collection of DIY decorations, it’s easy to forget to do the things you usually do to feel healthy, calm, and just generally on track with life. If you think this is just part of the fun, you might want to think again.

Talking about routines might be a lot less fun at this time of year than discussing festive outfits and potluck recipes, but staying at least a little on track with your usual habits and schedules can make or break your season. “Having daily routines is very important for your body to help manage your circadian rhythm, regulate your hormones, and keep your body balanced,” says Be Well health coach Katie Ulrich. “During times of chaos, it is even more important to try to stay committed to your routines so your immunity stays strong and your body stays resilient to the holiday madness. This will ensure you can be fully present with your loved ones and not feel exhausted or burned out.” We’ve put together some specific tips that will help you balance your regular routine with the holiday revelry.

1. Maintain your bedtime. You might be tempted to stay up until all hours squeezing in every last holiday TV special or wrapping all of your gifts in one night, but it’s best to resist the urge. Even when you have a holiday party on the schedule, Ulrich tells us you should stay as close as possible to your usual bedtime. This will make it easier for you to wake up on time, which will make the rest of your daily routine flow more smoothly. Dietitian and women’s fitness specialist Beth Auguste suggests setting a daily alarm or reminder on your phone to help you stay accountable for bedtime.

2. Mark out a morning routine. If your November and December days start positively with consistent, energizing mornings, you’ll set yourself up for success going forward. You can consider adding some meditation or journaling to your AM schedule to help you be a little more mindful in the chaos — but if that’s not your thing, you can still strive for reliable wake-up, breakfast, and exercise routines. “This way, no matter what comes up the rest of the day, you know you started out in a positive and healthy way,” encourages certified life and nutrition coach Jen Knight.

3. Get planning. At other times of year, you may not find it necessary to schedule specific blocks for meals, workouts, and self-care downtime, but if you’re not intentional with your calendar during the holidays, you’re less likely to make they happen. Healthy lifestyle expert Rebecca Cafiero says it’s a good idea to sit down at the beginning of every week of the season to make sure these key things are budgeted into the plan for the days ahead. “With added commitments like travel and festivities, suddenly finding time for your routines seems more challenging,” she says. “Make sure you tweak your schedule to fit in the important things, like your morning run, your self-care, and some downtime so that you don’t burn out or get sick!”

4. Eat before you go. A delicious holiday cookie and yummy cup of (spiked) hot chocolate is a great way to celebrate the season, but if you’re nervous about totally upending your eating habits during the festivities, Lifesum dietitian Kajsa Ernestam recommends making a point to eat before you head out for holiday parties. When you show up to an event hungry, you’re more likely to grab at treats that you wouldn’t normally choose. Showing up with an under-control appetite means you can focus on what you really want to indulge in.

5. Keep a healthy food “base.” Throughout the holidays, Ernestam suggests maxing out on fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and other nutritious food groups when you’re at home and cooking for yourself — even more than the way we’re sure you usually do. Maintaining this healthy base will make you feel more free to enjoy all the deliciousness that holiday events away from home have to offer.

6. Give yourself permission to say no. It’s easy to stray from the routine that keeps you feeling healthy and happy throughout the rest of the year when you suddenly have a seemingly constant rotation of after-work happy hours and holiday dinners to attend. If you’re up for it, you should absolutely check all of them out, but showing up out of a sense of obligation is going to needlessly mess with your routine. It’s okay to politely decline! “Carefully evaluating opportunities and making thoughtful choices about which excursions, parties, volunteer opportunities, and events to attend will make the holidays more enjoyable,” pharmacist and empowered wellness expert Lindsey Elmore tells us. “Remember: just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”

7. Don’t get caught up in the chaos. “The holidays are a time to give gratitude for all you have, enjoy time with loved ones, and celebrate the end of another year,” reminds certified strength, nutrition, and conditioning coach and owner of EAT.MOVE.LIVE. Evie Fatz. “Keep your focus on what matters most and don’t fall victim to the commercial hype.” Keeping your eye on the holiday prize will ensure that you don’t get so caught up in the trimmings of the season that you lose sight of your mental and physical health.

Between work commitments, grocery runs, and coffee dates, it feels like we barely have time to even make it to the gym. So when we do actually get our gear and go amid all these responsibilities (hello, 2024 New Year’s resolution), who can blame us for simply wanting to skip straight to cardio, burn as many calories as we can in 30 minutes, and then bounce? Unfortunately, this is a super ill-advised way to exercise, because it means you’re skimping on an essential part of the workout routine: stretching. Although adding a warmupmight mean tacking an extra 20 minutes onto your workout (you can do it!), the numerous benefits should make integrating stretching into your gym time a no-brainer. Nichole Tipps — lead trainer for V Shred, a virtual fitness training program — offers us some insight about the importance of stretching.


Everything You Need To Know About Stretching During A Workout

1. Why to Stretch: It’s not just for gym rats. According to Tipps, all of us, no matter how athletically inclined, should be incorporating stretching into our schedules.

“Many people ignore stretching when working out or just as a daily routine,” she says. “Stretching has an array of health benefits that serve as building blocks for longevity and physical well-being.”

Stretching increases flexibility, which improves range of motion in addition to improving workouts, and it delays the effects of atrophy later in life. It also aids posture and relieves stress. In terms of exercising, stretching has advantages both pre- and post-workout.

“Stretching increases blood flow to the muscles and improves your circulation,” explains Tipps. Because of this, failing to stretch beforehand can result in injury, and neglecting to do it afterward can lead to enhanced soreness and a longer recovery period. You’re also making yourself more susceptible to pain, inflammation, and tension in general, Tipps warns.

2. When to Stretch: Most people are at least vaguely aware of the benefits of stretching, but a lot of confusion surrounds when to actually do it during a workout. Contrary to popular belief, the heavy-duty stretching should be reserved for when you’ve finished exercising.

“After your workout is a better time to stretch with more dedication,” Tipps confirms. “Your muscles are tense, and they are tired and stressed in a good way. So stretching can help relieve that tension and reduce the soreness that results from working a muscle.”

Allot 10-15 minutes for these post-sweat stretches. Before your workout, simply stretch lightly, keeping the time to less than 10 minutes.

“Ease your muscles into the idea that you will be challenging them to perform,” Tipps instructs.

3. What to Stretch: Both of these stretch seshes should always address your arms, legs, and back, regardless of what areas that workout focuses on.

“There are different parts to each of these areas, so concentrate on those that your workout calls for that day, but don’t neglect everything else altogether either,” advises Tipps. “Remember, a lot of workout routines include compound exercises, which are multi-joint movements that work several muscles at one time.”

Although stretching might initially seem like yet another chore to add to your to-do list, its benefits are invaluable enough to no longer ignore. As Tipps encourages, “Stretch regularly, and over time you will reap the benefits and maintain your mobility.”

Traveling can be so rewarding; new experiences lend to a broader and more understanding mindset and taking time away from your everyday routine can feel like a much-needed breath of fresh air. Whether you’re headed away on a quick weekend accompanied only by a carry-on, or jet setting on a bachelorette trip to celebrate a lifelong girlfriend, trips are good for the mind, body, and soul.

While the positive aspects that accompany traveling are plenty, it’s completely normal to experience anxiety around this process as well. It’s inevitable that each time you take a trip you’re usually forced to encounter one uncomfortable situation or another; planned or not. Maybe your flight gets delayed, your friend can no longer watch your pet while you’re away, or you get sick just days before heading overseas; the unpredictability of travel can be extremely anxiety-inducing, and we get that.

Instead of leaving you to fly solo to stress about the potential anxieties of any upcoming trips you may have on your calendar, we spoke with California-based mental health professor, Dr. Ishan Shivanandwho has experience in groundbreaking protocols for reversing symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and more.

What is anxiety?

Dr. Shivanand describesanxiety as "a complex state that can manifest in various forms and intensities, affecting both the mind and the body." He continued, saying, “At its core, anxiety involves feelings of worry, fear, and unease, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, and difficulty concentrating. One way to understand anxiety is to think of it as the mind being overwhelmed by the multitude of thoughts, concerns, and stimuli bombarding it at any given moment. Just like a computer with too many open applications, the mind struggles to process everything efficiently, leading to a sense of being scattered and unable to focus.”

Why do I get anxious when I travel?

When it comes to anxiety specific to travel, the reason for why you may experience these uncomfortable feelings could be due to a multitude of reasons and can vary in intensity from person to person. Dr. Shivanand shared that travel anxiety could be in part due to “fear of the unknown, fear of safety, fear of flying, control issues, and past traumatic experiences,” as well other areas of anxiety including “separation anxiety, social anxiety, and health anxiety.” Dr. Shivanand went on to explain that, although fun, “traveling often involves stepping outside of one's comfort zone and encountering unfamiliar situations, environments, and people. For some individuals, the uncertainty of what to expect can trigger feelings of anxiety.”

No matter why you experience anxiety related to travel, “It's important to recognize that travel anxiety is a common and valid experience, and there are various strategies and coping mechanisms available to help manage it,” offered Dr. Shivanand. “These may include relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavioral strategies, gradual exposure to anxiety-provoking situations, seeking support from mental health professionals, and planning ahead to minimize stressors during travel.”

​How can I control my travel anxiety ahead of my upcoming trip?

  • Plan and Prepare in Advance: “Plan your trip ahead of time to reduce uncertainty,” says Dr. Shivanand. “This includes booking accommodations, transportation, and activities in advance, as well as familiarizing yourself with the destination, and local regulations.” Having a loose agenda of things to look forward to when your trip starts is a great way to get excited when thinking about traveling, instead of stressed.
  • Practice Relaxation Techniques: “Incorporate relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation to calm and center yourself. [Yoga of Immortals] Breathwork and Advance Cognitive sessions can really help,” says Dr. Shivanand. As the founder of the Yoga of Immortals practice, he uses its principles in his everyday life and has seen how it can positively impact the lives of others from a mental health standpoint. However, any type of yoga, meditation, and other similar practices you're familiar with should help.

  • Create a Checklist: “Create a checklist of essential items to pack and tasks to complete before your trip to stay organized and minimize last-minute stressors,” shared Dr. Shivanand. “Organizing your belongings and documents can also help you feel more in control during your travels.” The simple task of crossing off packing items from a list can feel cathartic and ensure you don’t forget anything essential during your travels.
  • Stay Connected: “Maintain communication with friends or family members before, during, and after your trip,” Dr. Shivanand recommends. “Knowing that you have someone to reach out to for support or guidance can provide reassurance and alleviate feelings of isolation.” News flash, the people you care about care about you too! They’ll be happy to hear from you and walk you through any tough feelings, if need be.
  • Stay Grounded: “Practice mindfulness and grounding techniques to stay present and centered during your travels,” shared Dr. Shivanand. Embrace the ‘pinch me’ moments of your trip as they happen, this is why you’re traveling in the first place after all!

  • Seek Professional Support: “If travel-related anxiety significantly impacts your ability to engage in travel experiences, consider seeking support from a mental health professional,” says Dr. Shivanand. Listen; asking for help is okay, and something that you should do if it will have a positive impact on your life.
  • Incorporate Meditative & Wellness Daily: In doing so, Dr Shivanand says, "One can effectively manage travel-related anxiety and enjoy your travel experiences with greater ease and confidence.” Dr. Shivanand reiterates that “it's okay to seek support and take proactive steps to prioritize your mental well-being during your travels.”

Trisha Okubo, Founder of Maison Miru

Trisha Okubo (pictured center) started out as a Stanford engineer but always had a passion for fashion, sculpture and architecture. She discovered the magic of making jewelry, intersecting form and function, art and science, order and chaos. "It’s wearable sculpture, a thing of beauty that captures your magic: your experiences and memories of the people you love," she says. "Miru in its native Japanese is evocative of sight. Hanna Chiou, Co-Founder of Habbi Habbi

Hanna Chiou grew up in the U.S. speaking her parent's native language Mandarin but not reading it. "It's challenging because Chinese is character-based so most books from Asia are intimidating because there are a sea of characters — and speaking doesn't translate to reading," she told us. I love sappy, sweet-as-candy rom-coms. You know, the ones where two leads spend the entire movie pursuing other people only to realize they were in love with each other the whole time. The movie usually takes place in a big city or a small town (and sometimes both), there's a quirky best friend, and there's always a big declaration of love before the credits roll. And while these straightforward movies are always on my watchlist, I also love the wacky movies that involve hilarious misunderstandings, ridiculous fight scenes, and gravity-defying Dirty Dancing movies (yes, I'm talking about Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling'sCrazy Stupid Love here). Humor always makes a movie even more enjoyable to watch, and A Family Affair is as wacky as they come. The movie reunites Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron, who played opposite each other ten years ago, and this time, Joey King's added into the mix. Before they were cast in A Family Affair, Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman played lovers in The Paperboy in 2012. Familiarity and comfort are two super important things in any romantic role, and I can already tell from these first look images that Zac and Nicole not only have awesome chemistry, but they're comfortable enough around each other to just have fun. And that's all we can ask for from a good movie!
