9 Things to Do for Yourself Before the Kids Wake Up

Natural early bird or not, now that you’re a mom, the morning is becoming a precious time of day that you don’t want to waste. Scratch that — that you can’t waste. You might not be a morning person, and an early wake-up cuts into your already limited sleep. But it can also set you up for a much more relaxed, productive, and positive day. So set your alarm, and get ready to start your day well before the first baby cry, tot gurgle, or preschooler “Mommy!!”

1. Work it. Or rather, work out. Forget about going to the gym: The round trip takes way too much time, and you’re on a tight schedule. Living room yoga, bedroom Pilates, or dancing around the playroom to your fave tunes are all easy (and totally valid) ways to exercise before the early risers actually rise.

2. Sit silently. The kids are noisy. (Seriously noisy.) But the house is quiet now — almost eerily so. Take full advantage! Quash your desire to run around making lunches and putting together the baby bag. Pour a cup of coffee, curl up in a comfy chair, turn your phone/tablet/laptop off, and just be. This is “me time” at its best.

3. Pursue a passion project: No, not the romantic kind (we’ll get to that). We’re talking about something that you really, truly, absolutely enjoy, but don’t “have” to do. Maybe it’s scrapbooking your memories or working on the novel that you’ve been writing in your spare time since grad school. Whatever you love, love, love doing, do it during the early morning hours.

4. Keep connected. Your friends without kids may start falling to the wayside the moment that the first little one pops out. They visit a few times to “see the baby.” But then the texts, emails, and random late-night phone calls stop. While they understand you have new priorities, there are only so many times that your BFFs can reach out only to get rejected or put on hold. Take this time to send a text, write an email, or connect with your friends in some other way. They’ll appreciate the gesture, and you’ll get to keep your relationships going.

5. Dress up. Okay, maybe not dress up up. But you can use this time to outfit yourself in something other than yoga pants and a t-shirt. Pick out an outfit that you feel comfortable and kind of stylish in. Heck, take the time to try on a few adorable options.

6. Perfect your pampering. Suddenly the word “pamper” has gone from what you do on spa days to what you put on your baby’s bottom — and it shouldn’t be that way. Whether you have 15 minutes or a full hour, you have time for a little beautification and self-indulgence. Go ahead, try out that K-beauty mask you’ve been jonesing to wear or work a new deep-sea mud mask through your not-washed-in-a-week hair.

7. Do a date morning. Sometimes “date night” isn’t easy to schedule when you’re new parents. Before you give up on your spending any QT with your honey, try an early-morning option. Set the alarm a half hour early and spend that extra time in bed together or have a candle-lit breakfast — sans kiddos.

8. Arrange adult activities. Again, no, we’re not talking about the bedroom kind of adult activities. This is more of a “get caught up on current events” or “stream a favorite grown-up show” type of time.

9. Be the un-mommy. Break free from mom mode by doing at least one thing that has absolutely nothing to do with mothering or your child. It’s surprisingly easy to get lost in the great wide world of parenting. You may not even realize that the shift has happened… until someone asks you what your favorite book is, and you reply, “Goodnight Moon,” without realizing that they weren’t referring to your favorite children’s book. Step away from the baby gear, swap parenting blogs for ones about anything other than the littles, and use some time to feel like you again.

The Ideal Number of Rest Days Per Week, According to Experts

If you’re one of those people who needs all the help you can get to enjoy your workouts, it can be hard to motivate yourself to work out twice a week, much less four or five times. By contrast, for some people, exercise addiction is a very real thing. But actually, there’s a pretty definitive number of days that you should be working out versus resting, at least once you’ve reached a higher level of fitness. Most new activity and fitness trackers even provide expert guidance on resting, like COROS watches and the new Apple Watch. Cue the ever-important rest day. It turns out, exercise experts agree on the number of rest days people who are in good shape and exercising regularly should take. On average, you should be taking two days per week for rest and active recovery.

Strength Training: 2-3 Days

The magic formula, according to Noam Tamir, CSCS, founder of TS Fitness, is three days of strength training, two days of cardio, and two days of active rest per week.

Strength training days are absolutely crucial for maintaining a healthy weight. In addition to forming and shaping a strong, sexy bod, adding muscle mass increases your resting metabolism — meaning you'll burn more calories when you’re at home on your couch, enjoying a good Netflix binge. If you’re not looking to add any noticeable muscle, you can theoretically strength train twice a week and make use of that third day for cardio, but we wouldn’t recommend skipping it altogether.

You can strength train in a variety of ways, too. Lifting is an obvious option, but for those who are really looking for a leaner physique or who just hate lifting, pilates and intense vinyasa yoga are also fabulous. Functional training, like rock climbing or rowing, also qualifies.

Make sure to take a break between your strength training days. Most experts say that you need at least 48 hours for your muscles to recover. In the meantime, there’s cardio!

Cardio: 2-3 Days

Cardio is undoubtedly important, not only for keeping your heart healthy, but also for burning fat. Without getting too technical, you should aim to hit 85-100 percent of your target heart rate for roughly 15 minutes. You can calculate your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. So, if you’re 27, your max heart rate would be 193, and 85 percent of that would be 164.

You can get there with high-intensity interval training, long-distance running, Zumba, cardio kickboxing — whatever floats your boat.

Active Rest: 2 Days

Finally, one of the most important parts of your workout plan: active rest. Two days of your week should be fully focused on letting your muscles rebuild through gentle stretching, walking, restorative yoga, or foam rolling. By completing these kinds of workouts twice a week, you’ll be staying active and building flexibility all while chilling out!

The Dangers of Over-Exercising

It’s important to take time off from your workouts if health is your overall goal. For one thing, over-exercising can lead to adrenal fatigue and other disorders, as exercise is literally added stress for your body. Your adrenal glands respond to exercise by releasing stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, and over time, not giving your adrenals a break can lead to tiredness, lethargy, and even thyroid problems.

And besides, it’s important to take a mental break from exercise. When you start to obsess about fitness, is when a healthy habit turns into something more sinister. Do yourself a favor and take at least two days a week for rest or active recovery. Your body will thank you!

In July 2017, a source seemingly confirmed what many fans had been wondering for months: that Tom Holland and Zendaya had been dating. Considering the two other sets of Spider-Man leads (Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield) both dated, it felt like this was one relationship that was bound to happen.

"They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man," the insider tells People. "They've been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye but they've gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another."

April 9, 2024 — Zendaya Raves About Tom Holland

In her Vogue cover story for May 2024, Zendaya talks a lot about how fame has affected both her life and Tom Holland's. “His [career] changed overnight. One day you’re a kid and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day you’re Spider-Man,” she says. “I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.”

That star power was evident in 2022, when Tom Holland and Zendaya spent the afternoon at the Louvre in Paris...and almost broke the internet. “You just kind of get used to the fact that, 'Oh, I’m also one of these art pieces you’re going to take a picture of. I just gotta be totally cool with it and just live my life,'" Zendaya continues. (She also says that when the museum let them walk around after-hours, "it was like Night at the Museum.”)

This spring, Zendaya can't wait to see Tom Holland in his London production of Romeo & Juliet: "[I] could not be more proud. I’m going to try to see as many shows as I possibly can.”

April 10, 2024 — Challengers Premieres In London

Tom Holland showed up for the London premiere of Challengers, and got to support Zendaya in the sweetest way. In this video captured at the premiere, you can see Tom and Z share a hug and a kiss on the cheek during the evening. Even the smallest gesture can mean a lot during a busy night, and I love how in sync Tom Holland and Zendaya are!

The latest viral clip about Tom Holland and Zendaya also has to do with Challengers. During another Challengers press tour stop, Zendaya's overjoyed to be presented with a bouquet of gardenias. “These are my favorite flowers!” she exclaims. When asked if Tom Holland buys her flowers, she points at the camera and jokes, “I hope he's watching!”

While not every girlfriend necessarily wants a bouquet, every couple definitely has to figure out each other's love languages so they can get to know each other better — and apparently A-listers are the exact same!

When you think of romantic destinations, you probably envision secluded beach getaways, remote mountain cabins with a roaring fire, or luxurious suites in a historic Parisian hotel. These options definitely qualify as romantic, but the truth is that most of us can’t travel into quite such another world on a regular basis… much less within a two-day timeframe.

Exploring a new city stateside can be uber romantic, if you know what to do with your time. Here are our top five cities for a romantic couple’s getaway closer to home, one that’s sure to be just as exciting and intimate as any dreamy honeymoon-esque destination.

Chicago

A fantastic city for old-fashioned American romance is Chicago. With its sweeping architecture, beautiful parks and lakefront views, this city is not to be underestimated if romance is your goal.

Start your first morning off at a classic brunch destination like Beatrix or The Bongo Room, both of which are sought out weekend after weekend by Chicago couples.

Next, take a stroll along Chicago’s Riverwalk, where you’ll find yourself gazing up at the incredible skyscrapers for which the Chicago School of architecture is known. If you’re really into history and design, the Chicago Architecture River Cruise Tour is not to be missed - you’ll float down the Chicago River (yes, drinks are available), and gaze up at the city from the center of its famous waterways.

Next, check out one of Chicago’s many amazing museums. The Museum Campus, located right along the lakefront, is home to the world-famous Art Institute of Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Field Museum. Oh, and did we mention the Adler Planetarium, where you can cuddle up and gaze up at the stars together?

For dinner, make a reservation at one of the city’s best restaurants, like world-famous Alinea or celebrity chef Stephanie Izard’s Girl & The Goat.

Finish off your day with a stroll along Navy Pier, where you can kiss atop the Ferris Wheel while taking in breathtaking nighttime views of the city.

Spend your second day touring Chicago’s most interesting neighborhoods on foot. Head to Old Town for gorgeous historic homes and a super-walkable, classic city vibe, or opt for Logan Square if hipsters and arcade bars are more your speed.

San Francisco

San Francisco’s natural landscape and architecture, with its rolling hills and European-feeling streets and architecture, makes it a serious contender for the most beautiful city in the U.S.

Start off your first day with a pastry from Tartine, or grab a meal at a charming cafe like Mama’s on Washington Square. San Francisco’s food and wine scene is truly its own culture, so don’t be surprised if you grab some extra items to-go.

Next, head to the Embarcadero and take in the waterfront views, or hit up the iconic Golden Gate Park for a classic attraction you won’t want to miss. Spots like the Japanese Tea Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, and Stow Lake serve up beauty and romance in heaps.

While you’re on foot, enjoy a picnic in the park. SF is the kind of city where you can easily grab fresh bread, deli meats, gourmet cheeses and snacks from your pick of local artisan markets with superb offerings.

That night, enjoy a romantic dinner at a waterfront restaurant along the Embarcadero, such as the Spanish-inspired Coqueta at Pier 5 or The Franciscan Crab Restaurant at Pier 39 for fresh seafood and stunning views of the Bay.

The next morning, take a walking tour of North Beach, often referred to as San Francisco's Little Italy. Grab brunch at Caffe Trieste and/or drinks at 15 Romolo, then explore the area’s historic streets and many local boutiques.

To cap off your trip, take a romantic sunset cruise on the San Francisco Bay. Sail past iconic landmarks like Alcatraz Island while sipping Champagne and enjoying hors d'oeuvres.

Boston is arguably the country’s most historic city, and its charming architecture, beautiful streets, and fantastic dining scene are perfect for a couple’s escape.

On your first day in Beantown, start your morning off with breakfast at a charming cafe like Tatte Bakery & Cafe or Thinking Cup. Go for a walk along the Charles River Esplanade, enjoying the scenic views of the river and the Boston skyline.

Next, have a romantic lunch at a cozy bistro in the Back Bay neighborhood, such as Deuxave or Mistral. For dinner, enjoy a romantic meal at a waterfront restaurant in the Seaport District or the North End. Legal Harborside boasts delicious fresh seafood in a modern environment, while Ristorante Lucia offers a super romantic aesthetic.

After dinner, take a sunset cruise on Boston Harbor. Relax aboard a sailboat or yacht while taking in the breathtaking views of the city skyline and the harbor lights.

You’ll need sustenance for all the must-do activities in Boston, which include exploring the historic Freedom Trail, starting at Boston Common and ending at the USS Constitution Museum in Charlestown.

Next, enjoy each other’s company and conversion as you stroll through the beautiful Boston Public Garden. Enjoy the lush greenery, colorful flowers, and the iconic Swan Boats on the pond.

For dinner, try a romantic dinner cruise on the Charles River. Enjoy a gourmet meal and live music while cruising along the river and admiring the city lights. New York City

New York City is for lovers and always has been. Start your first day off with a cozy breakfast at the NYC staple Sarabeth’s, which boasts a killer location just south of Central Park. Next, stroll hand in hand through the park as you digest. For bonus romance points, you can even rent a rowboat and paddle around the lake, taking in the urban beauty around you.

Visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a great way to spend your afternoon, and you can take in even more of the iconic experience by heading up to the Met’s rooftop garden for stunning views of NYC. Another great place for walking? The High Line, a converted rail line that’s now an elevated park perfect for strolling and taking in the city’s views.
