best british netflix shows
Netflix

Anyone else utterly obsessed with British TV? As the stereotypical American that I am, I love exploring English culture and immersing myself in all things UK-related. While I can’t afford a trip to London at the moment, for the time being, I’m perfectly happy with a solid binge of all my favorite British shows. If you feel the same way, here are the best British TV series you can watch on Netflix right now (after you finish all our favorite BritBox shows).

Keep reading for the best 7 British TV shows you can binge on Netflix right now.

1. Baby Reindeer

Ed Miller/Netflix

OMG, you guys. I think I’ve seen Baby Reindeer three times already, and it’s only been out for like a year. That’s how obsessed I am with it. The story is a masterclass on subverting expectations. It centers around a man named Donny who's an aspiring stand-up comedian. He dreams of stardom and eternal glory, yet due to a lack of stage presence (and honestly, talent), he’s forced to feel like an “extra” in someone else's story. Feeling powerless, Donny finds himself fading into the background, made to feel invisible.

One day, a woman named Martha stumbles into the pub where he serves. This woman begins to shower Donny with all the adoration and praise he has always longed for in his quest for glory. The only problem is, Martha is a convicted stalker. Donny should be freaked out, right? He should get a restraining order, right? So why, in a twist of events, does he find himself just as obsessed with her as she is with him? This series, based on a real-life story, will haunt you long after it wraps up.

2. Killing Eve

Killing Eve

BBC

Who’s up for a cozy murder mystery with a side of LGBTQ romance? This love story involves the twisted relationship between the charismatic killer, Villanelle, and the enamored detective investigating her, Eve. This program, masterfully written by Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is equal parts hilarious as it is horrifying. Not for the faint of heart, but perfect for thriller fans who actually want to experience a roller-coaster of thrills. Plus, the soundtrack for Killing Eve is seriously one of the best I’ve experienced from a TV show, like, of all time. I just can’t get enough of this show.

3. The Crown

the crown season 6

Justin Downing/Netflix

As that stereotypical American who is obsessed with British culture, I found myself completely enamoured by The Crown. The stunning cinematography, lavish costumes, gripping storylines, and star-studded cast swept me away to royal England in the most satisfying way possible. This Netflix series follows everyone from Queen Elizabeth to Princess Diana. It’s simply the perfect cozy period drama to get lost in for any rainy day.

Side note: best watched with a cup of tea and biscuits!

4. Sex Education

Netflix

For a while now, I’ve been looking for a series that matches the English grittiness and realism of Skins. Although Sex Education has a bit of a more comedic bend compared to the darkness of Skins, I love how realistic this series is. If you’re in the mood for a series with a stellar ensemble cast, lots of laughs, and unexpected moments of tenderness, you’ll love Sex Education.

5. Too Much

Ana Blumenkron/Netflix

Lena Dunham is back after a several-year hiatus, following her utterly brilliant HBO series, Girls. She is truly in her “Lenassance,” and her new Netflix series Too Much is proof. The show follows Jessica, a New Yorker who has always been starry-eyed for British culture. Whenever her real-life romances fail, she always has movies like Pride and Prejudice and Notting Hill to ease her pain.

When she finally decides to move to London, she realizes rather quickly that it’s not the romanticized version she’d always envisioned. Still, she ends up meeting a very handsome indie rocker who might just become her very own Mr. Darcy.

6. After Life

after life netflix show

Netflix

After Life is a unique depiction of a man (Ricky Gervais) grieving the untimely death of his beloved wife. This series tackles themes of heartache, suffering, and finding light in the darkest of circumstances. If you’re looking for a real tear-jerker with a side order of Gervais’ edgy brand of humor, be sure to check out After Life on Netflix.

7. One Day

one day

Ludovic Robert/Netflix

Everyone who loves a good old-fashioned slow-burn romance (we’re talking twenty years of tension, people) will love Netflix’s One Day. Based on the sweeping novel by David Nicholls, this story explores the lives of Dexter and Emma, who can never seem to get their timing right. It’s a beautiful and painfully realistic depiction of what happens when the person you long for most happens to be your best friend.
