A Teen Used This ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Scene as an Incredible Hidden Message in Her Yearbook
Not everyone can get David Harbour to appear in their high school yearbook photos with them, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative anyway. A graduating student from Albuquerque, New Mexico, used a timecode in a Grey’s Anatomy episode as her senior quote, and the hidden message is incredible.
Krysta Montoya’s yearbook featured the words “Grey’s Anatomy Season 5, Episode 6, 39:40,” alongside her picture. She later took to Twitter, saying that since everyone kept asking her what she meant by it, she’d screencap the exact moment in the episode that she was referencing.
It turns out, the timing corresponds to a scene in which character Erica Hahn (played by Brooke Smith, who was on the show from season 2 to season 5) says, “I am so, so, so gay.”
“I was just watching Grey’s Anatomy one day and I saw that quote and I wanted to make it my senior quote,” Montoya told INSIDER. She said she’s been out since she was a freshman, but wanted to make a “bold statement” nonetheless. “I feel some people do not accept who I am. … I’ve lost some friends over my sexuality, but my family has always supported me.”
Grey’s Anatomy has long been considered groundbreaking in its representation of the LGBTQ+ community. In the show’s sixth season, when Dr. Arizona Robbins (played by Jessica Capshaw, who will exit the show this year) was promoted to series regular in 2009, her character was, at the time, the only lesbian series regular on primetime TV.
Montoya first tweeted her explanation on Monday. It has since been retweeted almost 40,000 times.
