IKEA Is Getting into Virtual Reality With Their New App
Tech-lovin’ ladies, the future is now and we’re so into it! IKEA, who is taking great strides when it comes to bringing practical tech into our everyday lives and homes (countertop hydroponics ftw!), are taking the next step with their new app that uses virtual reality to help you decorate your home. Virtual reality. For decorating. Just so cool!
“Virtual reality is developing quickly and in 5-10 years it will be an integrated part of people’s lives,” says Jesper Brodin, managing director at IKEA of Sweden and Range & Supply Manager at IKEA Group. “We see that virtual reality will play a major role in the future of our customers. For instance, someday it could be used to enable customers to try out a variety of home furnishing solutions before buying them.” Loving this idea as much as we love the Tillfälle!
Those trying it out need not only the app but an HTC Vive headset and, once they’re all set up, will find themselves in a life-sized VR kitchen (with the ability to alter the perception of the user’s height if you happen to be a little shorter or a little taller than average). Use the app to navigate and check out three settings and styles for the room which will allow you to swap up the colors of the cabinets and drawers with a simple click. Did we mention that this is just so cool? Yes? Well, it is!
The app is in the test stage and is meant to encourage customer feedback so that the experience can be improved before it’s expanded, so here’s to hoping we’ll be seeing this and other VR shopping apps soon. But remember, if you’re trying on clothes in a VR world and swapping one outfit for another, you want to be sure to not accidentally get nekkid in real life!
