The Oscars are no stranger to controversy, especially if #OscarsSoWhite is any indication. But this year, there is a celeb duo nominated for the prestigious Hollywood award who have kicked up major controversies in two totally offensive and wildly disturbing ways.
Casey Affleck received rave reviews for his performance in Manchester by the Sea, and he’s already won the Golden Globe for Best Actor, which was handed to him by former winner Brie Larson. What made that totally ironic is that Brie Larson is a sexual assault activist and Casey Affleck has been accused of sexual assault and harassment. These disturbing allegations are also the reason plenty of folks are having a hard time seeing him recognized and lauded by those in showbiz, including receiving an Oscar nom this year.
Similarly, folks are finding it nearly impossible to accept that Mel Gibson is up for an award for his work as Director of Hacksaw Ridge (which received a total of six nominations, including one for Best Picture). Gibson is no stranger to controversy, having formerly been accused of making homophobic and racist remarks, as well as a horribly offensive remark about sexual assault that was actually caught on tape.
He has also faced a restraining order from his stepmother, who feared the actor would do her bodily harm, and a domestic violence restraining order which was meant to protect his girlfriend and daughter, and was the subject of a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department domestic violence investigation, until it was dropped when Gibson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge.
With these controversies looming over the Oscars, we’ll surely be seeing some wild reactions if either or both of these dudes walk away with an award.
