Is it safe for me to finally come out as a massive Adam Sandler fan? I know, I know- it’s so easy to dismiss the former SNL alum as the lead actor in some of the most obnoxious, poorly structured, juvenile films of the '90s and early aughts. But anyone who’s taken a deep dive into the celeb’s filmography knows that when Sandler decides to put a sliver of depth into his movie roles, he’s untouchable. (Punch Drunk Love, anyone? The Meyerowitz Stories? Heck, even his seemingly toilet-humored flick Click still has me wiping my eyes, and I haven’t seen that classic since 2006.)

My point is, when Sandler’s good, he’s disturbingly good. And while Happy Gilmore was never one of his more profound flicks (it’s mainly just Happy using potty humor while swinging around a golf club), the sequel promises to have some heart, just like all of Sandler’s most favored projects.

Christopher McDonald, who is reprising his role as Happy Gilmore’s preppy rival in the sequel, emphasized that Happy Gilmore 2 will be laced with feel-good emotions. When asked by People to give us some insight on what the film is about, the actor said it’s "about family and friends and love and basically a lot of heart." He continued, expressing his love for Sandler’s ability to add substance to his seemingly juvenile films. "What I love about Adam Sandler is his heart," the actor continued. "He's got so much love for people ... and he's done some amazing work in the last few years. So I'm very happy for him."

Us too, McDonald! Us too.

So, without further ado, let’s unpack everything we know so far about the Happy Gilmore sequel.

Happy Gilmore’s trajectory has changed significantly since the first film, which premiered nearly 30 years ago from today. Now, Gilmore is a family man who will do anything to ensure his loved ones live a successful, fulfilling life. He’s even willing to risk heading back to the golf course, despite being quite rusty. Yet it’s his motive for playing the sport, to help out his daughter, that shifts Happy Gilmore 2 into a genuinely heartfelt film. And I, for one, cannot wait to see it.

On top of the aforementioned stellar cast, Adam Sandler is bringing his family on board via golf cart, as they ride on down to the Happy Gilmore sequel. In the new movie, Sandler’s a family man, and he has to head back to the golf course so he can cough up enough dough to help his daughter pay for ballet school. And who will be playing Gimore’s child, other than Sandler’s real-life daughter? Plus, his wife, Jackie Sandler, will also be making a cameo.
