Katy Perry Made Twitter History and Got Her Own Emoji
Here’s something to witness! Katy Perry made social media history on Friday, June 16, when she became the first Twitter user ever to reach 100 million followers.
To celebrate, Twitter released a video of Perry’s social media highlights, starting with her first tweet on February 21, 2009 — “Just got into Berlin… feeling better thank you, have my vicks inhaler by my bedside… and P.S. I TWITTTTER! GAH. Such a follower!” — and created a personalized emoji for the hashtag #LoveKaty.
Oh, and the irony of Perry calling herself a follower in that first tweet is not lost on us. Today, Perry only follows 205 of her 100 million internet friends.
Social media’s newest queen responded to the love with, obviously, a tweet: “Thank you, @Twitter, for always giving me an opportunity to have a voice!”
This latest feat caps off a very exciting week for the pop diva. After releasing her fourth studio album, Witness, last Friday, Perry put herself into a Real World-esque situation and live-streamed her life for three days, during which time she did yoga with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, ranked her ex-boyfriends’ bedroom capabilities with James Corden (John Mayer, Orlando Bloom, and Diplo, from best to worst), participated in a live therapy session with Viceland’s Dr. Siri Sat Nam Singh, and apologized to Taylor Swift. So, you know, business as usual for Katy Cats.
