The Hunting Wives

If you’re looking for a Netflix hit that’s equal parts dramatic as it is high camp, The Hunting Wives is most certainly for you. This scandalous show takes all the small town Texas charm you loved about Ransom Canyon and gives it a Desperate Housewives twist. Oh, and did we mention it's a book-to-TV adaptation? Just when we thought we couldn't love this show even more...Let's dig into it!

What is 'The Hunting Wives' about?

The Hunting Wives

Lionsgate

The TV series, based on the best-selling book by Mary Cobb, follows Sophie (Brittany Snow) as she uproots her life from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to East Texas. Of course, this isn’t her decision- as a certified brainiac who lives right next to the Harvard campus, the last thing Sophie wants is to spend her time with a bunch of gun-shooting, rodeo-riding, bible-belting red necks. Yeah, thanks, but no thanks!

But alas, her husband’s career has left Sophie no choice but to make the big move to the South. Unsurprisingly, this is a huge culture shock for her, and she evidently needs a lot of Xanax in order to survive her new surroundings. Here in this new environment, Sophie exchanges leatherbound books for rifles. She exchanges intellectual soirees for cowboy rodeo dance parties. And she must leave behind her old friends to immerse herself in a southern society that makes her feel like the ultimate fish out of water.

Fortunately, Sophie is able to get by with the help of her new friend, a Texan socialite named Margo. At times, though, the lines begin to (seriously) blur as to whether these two opposing women are really “just friends” after all. (i.e, they’re both down bad for each other, and it’s kind of fascinating to watch unfold.)

What I love about this wacky, chaotic Netflix drama (originally a Starz series) is the fact that all these characters are so morally corrupt. Just when you think you’re gonna get a sliver of the usual “role model” characteristics we tend to assign to female characters, we’re left as viewers without a reprieve from this endless hedonism. These cutthroat southern women are willing to do whatever it takes to relieve the everlasting boredom from their seemingly small-town lives. Even if that means causing bloodshed in the process. No, we’d never want to be anywhere near these women in our real lives, let alone be friends with them. But do these characters make for interesting TV? You bet!

With that being said, the lack of a moral compass on this soapy hit has led to the series being rather divisive amongst viewers. While some audiences appreciate how far the writers of The Hunting Wives are willing to go, others can’t get past just how depraved these characters truly are.

If you couldn’t get enough of the drama on Ransom Canyon, believe me when I say, you’re going to get a major kick out of The Hunting Wives. Just be warned: things down South are about to get seriously messy.

Yes, there is a trailer! It shows Brittany Snow's Sophie O'Neill reluctantly relocating her life to East Texas. Upon arrival, she's introduced to a group of women who seem to want all the fun...and potentially none of the consequences. As she gets to know the group, it's clear there's so much that's unclear about these wives — and maybe she doesn't want to uncover the deadly truth.
