A part of The Sandman’s glowing praise was due to respect for the incredible ensemble cast, as well as the palpable on-screen chemistry the characters share with one another. While there are several transformative performances in season 1 from seasoned actors like Charles Dance and Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones alums), I found myself particularly drawn to Tom Sturridge’s performance as he effortlessly slips into the skin of The Sandman. It’s not exactly an accessible role to play: essentially, Sturridge portrays Morpheus, who has the supernatural ability to control dreams. They don’t call him “the King of Dreams” for nothin.’

Yet Morpheus (AKA Dream) is unexpectedly captured by a warlock and imprisoned for decades as a result (over 100 years, to be exact). During his imprisonment, he loses everything: his powers, his well-being, and his mind. So when he finally manages to break free and escape, he must retrieve three essential objects which will repair the Dreaming realm. With deadly forces trying to take him down along the way, this mission proves to be no easy task.

Season 1 left off with tons of juicy cliffhangers, and fans have anxiously been waiting for the second season to arrive on the number one streaming platform. Fortunately, showrunners announced that a second and final installment will arrive on Netflix, set for the end of July 2025.

However, due to the passionate cult following the series has acquired, many fans are upset by the fact that there’s only one more season left of the show. Audiences took to Reddit to voice their disappointment that The Sandman won’t be exploring more seasons down the road. “Makes me so sad that they're going to leave so much story unmade,” one user wrote of the series' abrupt ending. “Kind of makes me sad this is the last one,” another agreed.

Much like the fans, series creator Allan Heinberg also wants future seasons of The Sandman. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he's "reluctantly" leaving the show where it is. He said, "I’ve never had a job where every episode is like a little movie, and you get to write about the most important things in a human life — and not just a human life, but gods’ lives."

Heinberg explained that the show is expensive to make, and that unfortunately without high viewership numbers it's tough to maintain. However, he said that he "could happily go on writing Sandman forever because you can write about anything." He elaborated, "You can tell any kind of story in any genre, and you can do it intelligently, elegantly and passionately. It has been literally a dream job for me, but it was a blessing to be able to bring Dream’s story to a close and then hint at what the future could be if the numbers were there."

So while that's not a definitive answer, it definitely shows that Heinberg would make more episodes of The Sandman if and when he could. Fingers crossed!
