Meet thumbprint eyeliner: 2017’s edgy spin on the classic cat eye. “The updated shape does away with the stress of creating that perfect, precise flick since it’s rounded at the end, mimicking the shape of your thumb,” says e.l.f. Global Artistic Director Achelle Richards.

“And it was one of the hottest looks on the Spring 2018 catwalk — pun intended.” Models at Jason Wu wore the new technique, and we also spotted versions of thumbprint liner on Selena Gomez and Lady Gaga.

Instead of stressing about achieving perfectly even liner wings like you would for a traditional style, embrace the fact that the thumbprint trend is more user-friendly. The thicker, curved vibe of this new look can effortlessly be created with your finger — what’s better than that? “This is a much easier version of the cat eye to try because creating that flick can be challenging,” Richards explains. “If you want to slay the look, make sure you have that curved thumbprint and a few key tools to clean up the shape.”

Now for the good stuff: how to make this runway-inspired trend all your own. “Focus the width of the eyeliner at the outer corner of the eye by dabbing the corner of your thumb in a creamy liner like e.l.f. Cream Eyeliner ($3),” she recommends. “Bring the line inward, toward the lash line, by tapering it in thinner.” Once you’ve got that down pat, refine the shape even more to get a defined look. “Finish up with the e.l.f. Makeup Remover Pen ($3),” says Richards. “It’s your little secret to creating a flawless thumbprint eyeliner look.” There you have it!
