Explore Chicago's Hippest Neighborhood From This Mid-Century Modern Hotel

Imagine sipping Champagne above a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, or indulging in a heavenly spa treatment with the Manhattan skyline in view. Even if your wallet can't quite stretch to a full-blown luxury getaway, sprinkling a touch of luxe into your travels can turn an ordinary trip into a memorable adventure. That idea sparked our new series, Flights of Fancy, where we take you along for a trip to the luxury experiences around the cities we adore.

Chicago is the U.S.’s third-biggest city, and one of its most exciting. While the city is undoubtedly the financial and cultural center of the Midwest, Chicago shouldn’t be relegated to a regional hub. A true global city, this diverse and sprawling metro has a lengthy history of influence in architecture, music, design, and the culinary arts, not to mention comedy and theater.

One of the benefits of taking a trip to Chicago is that it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Sure, it’s not going to be super cheap to visit any major city, but in comparison to the U.S.’s coastal hotspots, Chicago is a fantastic deal. If you’re particularly intrigued by the Windy City’s emphasis on architecture and design, you shouldn’t miss The Robey hotel.

Photo: The Robey

Located in one of Chicago’s hippest and most bustling neighborhoods — Wicker Park — The Robey stands out for its mid-century modern design, many amenities, and fantastic location for exploring the local shops, eats, and nightlife.

About the Neighborhood

Photo: The Robey

One of the biggest benefits of The Robey is its surrounding scene. Wicker Park has made countless lists of the coolest neighborhoods in the country, and for good reason — from the art murals adorning its historic buildings to the many thrift shops, speakeasies, and gourmet bakeries gracing its streets, it has all the makings of a hipster oasis, even if it’s a little more established these days. Ukrainian Village also borders Wicker Park to the South along Division Street, and has its own share of incredible shops, restaurants and bars.

Here’s how to get the most out of visiting this iconic hotel, no matter your budget. Plus, what to do in the neighborhood!

Stay At The Robey (Budget: $160+)

Photo: The Robey

Booking a room at The Robey can be pretty reasonable. You can score the best deal by booking in the off season, staying Sunday through Monday, and springing for a Queen-sized room. Even The Robey’s most modest rooms are stunning design-wise, boasting decor that looks straight out of a West Elm catalog.

Photo: The Robey

The main draw of every room at The Robey may be the decor, but a close second is the Wicker Park neighborhood’s buzzing energy. You’ll get to view the city lights through your window and revel in all the neighborhood has to offer once you step outside The Robey’s doors.

Photo: The Robey

Every room comes with full access to the hotel’s amenities, which include rooftop pool (open seasonally), personal care items from Le Labo (like we said, this place doesn’t mess around when it comes to good branding), and complementary bikes you can use to traverse the bike-friendly near northwest side of Chicago. You’ll be right on Milwaukee Ave., a busy corridor that has a bike lane connecting the fashionable neighborhoods of Wicker Park, Logan Square, and Avondale.

Dine At The Robey (Budget: $50+)

Photo: The Robey

If a stay at The Robey isn’t in your budget, consider checking out the hotel via Cafe Robey. Chef Michael Elliott serves up comfort food with a seasonal twist, and get this — you can get brunch at any time of day. Dreams really do come true.

Photo: The Robey

If The Robey’s all-day brunch is what you’re craving, spring for the Duck Hash, Biscuits and Gravy, or the Chilaquiles, accompanied by refined yet indulgent sides like the Maple Glazed Pork Belly or the Whipped Ricotta with cherry pepper jam, honey, and sea salt.

Photo: The Robey

More in the mood for dinner fare? We can’t recommend the Roasted Chicken enough, but if you’re more in the mood for something carby, the Ricotta Gnocchi is where it’s at. Wash whatever you choose down with Cafe Robey’s curated wine list or one of their many carefully crafted cocktail options.

Grab Drinks At The Robey (Budget: $20+)

Photo: The Robey

If your budget is pretty limited but you still want a little bit of the Robey experience, head to one of the hotel’s three stunning bars. You could stay ground-level and check out Clever Coyote, a ‘90s inspired nostalgia bar that serves up tiki-style drinks and delicious bar food, all while letting you people watch from a cozy table in a gorgeous environment.

Photo: The Robey

Got your sights set a little higher? Take the elevator up to the Up Room, The Robey’s 13th-floor lounge that allows you to take in the city skyline for miles and miles. The building is the tallest in the area, so nothing will block your view of the endless city lights.

Photo: The Robey

Somewhere in the middle (more specifically, on the 6th floor) is the Cabana Club, which offers some great views that are a little more down-to-earth, though just as exciting. Take in all the sights and sounds of the city, from the El train passing by to views of the iconic John Hancock tower. This is also where the rooftop pool is located — and it’s open to all during the summer months!

Spend The Day In Wicker Park

shutterstock

Sure, you’ll find mainstay shopping destinations like Lululemon, Aesop, Free People, and Yeti along the corridors, but you’ll also discover some amazing and unique shops. Head to Una Mae’s for stylish clothing and gifts, or Kokoroko for curated vintage finds and kitsch items straight out of decades past.

Some must-visit culinary destinations include Big Star (seriously, the world’s best craft tacos and margaritas), Ina Mae tavern, and Folklore, an Argentine grill just steps away on Division. Oh, and cap off the evening with drinks at Violet Hour, the neighborhood’s famed speakeasy, or The Rainbo Club, an infamous dive bar that’s been in business since 1933.

In addition to all the shopping and eating you can do, there are plenty of opportunities to simply people-watch and spend time outdoors, too. Check out the neighborhood's eponymous Wicker Park, located right in the heart of the neighborhood. Sprawl out and admire the brick Chicago-style homes that line the street, or take a quick walk up to the 606, an old El train line that’s since been converted into a walking path and greenspace-boasting connecting corridor between many of the city’s neighborhoods.

With all that just outside your doorstep, it might be easy to forget the incredible scenery and culinary pleasures that await you when you return to your hotel for the night.

Follow along for all your summer travel needs with our Flights of Fancy series and Jetset Journeys series.

Summer travels are quickly approaching and we couldn’t be more excited; our calendars are filled with wellness retreats, getaways with our BFFs, and romantic long weekends that we’ve been waiting for — potentially since what feels like last summer. For many of us, the bucket-list-worthy trips that we have planned this summer are at least a plane ride away, and while it can feel exciting to pick out the perfect airport outfit and snap an aesthetic bird's eye view pic while in the air, traveling via plane can be anxiety-inducing and stressful.

Taking a trip that requires a plane ticket — as opposed to a road trip — forces travelers to give up a lot of control; you might be confined to only packing in a carry-on, and you don’t get to decide the exact time that you start your travel day, and you might encounter cancellations or delays that are entirely out of your control. United Airlines has predicted that summer’s kickoff holiday, Memorial Day weekend, is going to be their busiest MDW to date with more than 3 million passengers expected to fly between May 23rd through May 24th, 2024. During MDW United will fly more than 4,400 times a day; that’s more than 73 take-offs every minute!

With that many flights in the air, there are bound to be a few hiccups and inevitable flight delays that we want you to feel prepared for, instead of panicked about, this summer. To get the inside scoop on what you should do if your flight gets delayed, we spoke with various travel experts who shared the best tips and tricks for navigating flight delays in a way that benefits travelers below.

How to Prepare for Flight Delays Before Take-off

Flight delays are usually unplanned, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t plan ahead for them. Although obstructions to an exciting trip that awaits aren’t something you want to think about, there are a few simple steps that can make dealing with a delay much simpler should your departure time be pushed back.

With over 21+ years with United and over 15 countries visited under his belt, Chicago-based Mike Kempner, Director of Irregular Operations for the airline is well-versed in irregular travel adjustments. Mike’s top tip for travelers who might experience flight delays can be done before they even get to the airport; download the app of the airline you’re traveling with. Kempner shared that United’s app was recently revamped to provide travelers with a “seamless day-of travel experience.” United’s app, for example, has a “self-service feature that automatically presents travelers with personalized re-booking options, bag tracking information, and meal and hotel vouchers when eligible if their flight is delayed or canceled.”

Having the mobile app of the airline you’re flying with can be extremely helpful for staying in the loop about your flight status and avoiding anxiety about the unknown. Kempner explained this further by sharing that “when a flight is delayed by more than 60 minutes or canceled, [United] customers will be notified through text message and the app and prompted to check flight and re-booking status, book other preferred flight options, view and receive eligible hotel, meal and/or rideshare vouchers, and track bags.” By having these resources at your fingertips in real-time following a flight delay, you’ll feel prepared for the actions that you need to take next to keep your trip on track.

What to do When Your Flight Has Inevitably Been Delayed

Even if you’ve taken all of the smart steps prior to the day of your flight to minimize stress, there are a few tricks that you should have up your sleeve that larger travel corporations might not be willing to share. To get the skinny on delay loopholes and best practices, we leaned on ATX-based Melanie Demi, the content creator behind HerBoozyTails on Instagram. Melanie has been creating travel content that inspires others to explore the world before retirement for several years and has been to 30 countries in the process. While her passport is full of stamps and her Instagram captures her trips beautifully, she’s also fallen victim to many flight delays during her adventures.

“The first thing I do when my flight is start a note in my phone with the OG flight time and updated (delayed) flight time to have for reference” explained Demi. “It’s important to have documentation of your delays in case you need to submit anything to the airline, either for reimbursement or to get additional aid to get you through your delay, such as meal vouchers or even a hotel for the night should your delay cause you to miss connections or move your flight to another day.” The notes don’t stop there; Demi shared that travelers should “Make sure to note whatever the cause [of delay is] is,” whether it be weather, mechanical, etc., because oftentimes the “compensation” you’re entitled to depends on the cause of the delay.”

It’s normal not to know everything about the airline you’re flying with, but knowing extra details definitely helps during a delay. HerBoozyTails elaborated on this with the following scenario: “Let’s say your flight with Delta is delayed, and you need to get onto another flight to make it to your final destination ASAP, but [the representative] tells you there are no more Delta flights that day, so you’ll have to wait until tomorrow.” This is where doing your due diligence comes in; Demi went on to explain that hypothetically, “there is a Virgin Airlines flight that night… Delta should also be able to book you on that flight because Virgin and Delta are partners.” Long story short, it’s important to “look up to see what partner airlines the airline you’re flying with has, and you can find more flight options there!”

Overall, submitting refund requests as soon as possible after a delayed flight inclusive of all of the information from your flight and its delay is the best starting place for handling a flight delay with ease, but we hope that the extra secrets shared by our experts come in handy during future trips.

No matter where you are in your journey, confused, uncertain, and just plain stuck…know that astrology can help you fill the gaps while gaining peace and self-awareness. Now, let's look at June's astrological forecast.

This month exhibits a delightful blend of happiness and opportunities. Mercury, the cosmic messenger, starts this month as it enters its home sign, Gemini. It enables us to get the conversations going at a comfortable speed and flow. A new moon in the social butterfly sign, Gemini, sets the scene for us to start anew, involving our ideas and even opening pathways in our love stories. What a great start as summer approaches. Then, Mars, the planet of drive and motivation, enters the stable sign Taurus, allowing us to build a solid foundation aligned with our future ambitions.

For the second half of the month, Venus and Mercury enter the nurturing sign Cancer, inviting us to hold space for conscientious-filled discussions and security in our connections. Things will begin to heat up as Vesta, the asteroid of devotion and keeper of the sacred flame, enters the fire sign Leo. It will reawaken our inner fire while igniting a new phase in our journey involving our devotion. The Sun's journey into maternal Cancer manifests a period of self-care and emotional needs. The full moon in Capricorn heralds a moment for you to analyze the state of your structures while letting go of the outmoded in your life. What To Expect In Your June Horoscope For 2024

May was epic with the solar flares...did you see that? It was a month filled with personal revelations regarding our self-worth and integrity moving forward. June will take these notions a notch higher regarding our communication with others and even analyzing our inner dialogues. It will be your chance to act on your goals (mid-year reset, anyone?) and witness the changes as you continue to master your thoughts. The cosmos begins its dance on Monday, June 3, when Mercury, the planet of communication and ideas, enters its dignity sign, Gemini. This period extends clarity and speed in our dialogue. While airy Gemini can spiral out in different directions, Mercury thrives in this sign, as it will help us feel more open and receptive to ideas from various sources. The more curious and unbiased you are, the better.

The new moon in expressive Gemini on Thursday, June 6, provides a perfect opportunity to socialize and attend events. As Venus is in exact alignment with the new moon, it can lead to experiences filled with love, laughter, and joy. It will be a fun night to remember. Book an outing with your friends or arrange a solo date—this cosmic event will be serendipitous. That weekend, Mars, the planet of motivation, enters the earthy sign Taurus on Sunday, June 9. This planetary ingress will slow things down at a comfortable pace. Ensuring you observe before diving headfirst into things that you may regret later. You will feel more at peace. For those who are impatient (guilty), get that yoga mat out or take long nature walks to work off that built-up steam.

Venus, the love planet, and Mercury enter Cancer on Monday, June 17, shifting our focus to deepen our connections with others while holding heart-to-heart conversations. These two power planets merging on the same day will ignite a breakthrough in your perception of love and values. Expressing your vulnerability will help you see where you stand in your relationship(s). The truth will set you free. Expect your heart to sing as Vesta, the asteroid of self-devotion and commitment, enters the sign Leo on Wednesday, June 19. This transit will ignite a stirring in your core, giving you the courage to step up and claim your happiness. The fire inside will burn stronger as you remain invested in your passion and grit. Allow yourself to take center stage and share your gifts. The world is waiting.

Waterworks Cancer season begins on Thursday, June 20, with the Sun moving into the sign of the crab. This cosmic event heralds the beginning of summer, and we begin to embody warmth, compassion, nurturing, and emotional sensitivity. Hosting potlucks or social outings can be a great way to commemorate your Cancer friends. Focus on building solid, authentic connections. We deserve to rebuild after the eclipse season back in April.

The full moon in Capricorn on Friday, June 21, will bestow us the ability to analyze the state of our structures. Many will realize what needs to be done to rebuild solidity after what has not been fully cultivated. This period can be a bit of a "Debbie Downer," with Saturn in intense opposition to Juno, the asteroid of marriage and committed partners. If you are in a relationship, you will understand what needs to improve or be at peace by cutting your losses and moving on.

Speaking of Saturn, this month concludes with it entering its retrograde phase on Saturday, June 29. Contemplate what kind of life you are building these next several months. Your awareness of karma will heighten, and becoming aligned with integrity and humility will alchemize. A review of your priorities and commitments will inevitably line up.

Home and family life will be your primary focus this month, Pisces. Mercury and Venus are aligned in this sector, prompting you to analyze your family and emotional security priorities. What makes you feel safe? The planets Mercury and Venus beckon you to research the deeper meaning behind your insecurities, and the best place to begin this venture is to analyze your family line. The new moon in Gemini will help you turn over a new leaf regarding any past unresolved issues, enabling you to set down new roots. It can be through family planning, moving, or renewing your family connections. When Cancer season begins, you will feel more in flow and centered due to Venus being in a supportive position, and Mars will assist you in grounding your creative ideas. Deciphering your concepts will be seamless. Take charge of your ambition. The full moon in Capricorn will secure your connections with friends and networks as you express your vulnerability. Any unresolved issues or burned bridges can be rebuilt during this lunation. This Saturn retrograde will allow you to review your next moves personally and professionally while helping you preserve your energy. You will experience renewal as you remain invested in your well-being.

Dearest gentle readers, we're less than a day away from seeing gorgeous co-stars Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton grace our screens in Bridgerton Season 3. Is it obvious we've been yearning for their onscreen chemistry? We can't help it — "Polin" simply beckons!

If you've been enjoying seeing them on the red carpet and can't believe how well they work together, there's a reason for that — an amazing friendship! As gorgeous as these two are together, Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton are pretty much besties IRL. You know we love talking about good friendships (here's looking at you Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez), so it's only right we honor two of our favorite Bridgerton co-stars.

Here's three super sweet reasons why they're friendship goals!

Three Sweet Reasons Why Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton Are Friendship Goals

They're dance partners.

No, this isn't a joke. Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton have been dance partners for — hold your breath — five years. Nicola first revealed this fun fact about their friendship during an interview with E! News.

As she shared why she and Luke were able to film the steamy scenes we'll be watching soon, she said, "We've actually been dance partners for five years. So we had a certain physical comfort level with each other which helps immensely."

Luke added, "You'd think filming a scene like that with someone...who has been your friend for like four years, would be a daunting experience, but actually it was a reassuring one."

Whew, I think I may need to check my temperature because those are still very hot answers 😮💨.

Support is at the center of their friendship.

These two know that being supportive is essential for most friendships to thrive, and they're certainly fond of being there for one another. Nicola shared a cute pic of the two last year on Instagram where she'd arrived to support Luke Newton during his run in The Shape of Things in London.

She captioned their candid picture, "Smashing it up on the London stage and I’m so proud, you’re the best @lukenewtonuk."

Similarily, Luke showed his support for Nicola when he wore a shirt by the nonprofit organization Choose Love. Nicole shared the sweet pic on Instagram and wrote , "I know you’ve been waiting and the latest @chooselovemodel is here
Thank you Luke for being the best and supporting this incredible charity who are supporting refugees in great need the world over."

They don't mind showing friendly PDA.

Does friendly PDA exist? Sure! Think about the last time you hugged your bestie without involving any romantic feelings? The same applies to Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton. If you ask me, it seems like they're having fun during the press run for the third season of Bridgerton, but can you blame them?

Polin — the cute nickname Bridgerton fans have for Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton— are way too cute to ignore. But, any theories you may have that they're secretly dating will have to be put on hold.

As of now, People reports they'e just friends and nothing more. Nicola even told Extra how she and Luke feel about the rumors. "We think it's really sweet ... because we truly love each other."

We know this doesn't mean you'll stop dreaming about Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton being Hollywood's next 'It' couple, so we won't stop you. Just know that their friendship is equally beautiful and deserves to be respected!
