2024 Home Decor Trends To Inspire Your Next Makeover

home decor trends 2024

A new year often sparks urges for a refresh — toward healthy habits, goal setting, clutter clearing and bringing in more positive energy. For home decor enthusiasts, that all translates to the home, and often means clearing out the old and bringing in the new. Unlike fashion, though, home decor trends tend to take their time easing into major seasonal shifts (it’s easier and cheaper to swap out your wardrobe than your decor -- sustainable too!). Some home decor trends that are here to stay going into 2024? Sustainability and indoor-outdoor living, the former driven by millennials and Gen Z, according to a new design report by global surfacing company Cosentino.

They pulled designer and homeowner data to forecast top trends for 2024 and beyond, along with insights from some of the country's top designers. We asked some of our favorite designers too what they think will be hot next year. Here are new trends to watch and incorporate into your home – plus, rental hacks to try if you're not down with a whole renovation!

Quiet Luxury

Design: Hoedemaker Pffeifer | Photo: Haris Kenjar

"Similar to the fashion movement, interiors for 2024 will trend toward luxe, understated designs and materiality that do not feel overly decorative," says Peak Petersen, interior design principal at Hoedemaker Pfeiffer in Seattle. "A paired back palette, soft shapes, textural fabrics - allowing your favorite things in the room to be showcased on a subtle backdrop."

Tailored Eclectic

Design: Living With Lolo | Photo: Life Created

Mixing old with new never goes out of style but 2024 will elevate the look with a more tailored design. "Meaning, new designs will incorporate collected pieces and new pieces together to make spaces feel timeless. I like to call it tailored eclectic," says Brad Ramsey, principal and founder of Brad Ramsey Interiors in Nashville. "That term usually elicits images of cluttered rooms with no true design direction. But no more, it's time to layer it up the right way."

AI in Design

Photo: Lupton Circle

Several designers noted the impact of AI in design as a way to optimize space and be more energy efficient. "The key to remember is that AI is only as good as the information it is provided and so the need for vision and creativity will always require a design professional to navigate trends, client preferences and functionality to create an individual, thoughtful design," adds Ramsey.

Enter The "Spathroom"

Spas are all about relaxation and self care, not rushing out in the morning to work. Big bathtubs, open showers, saunas, and spa-like amenities are all going to be a big trend in 2024. According to the report, designers and homeowners agreed that a spa-inspired bathroom was among their top 3 home priorities overall.

Rental hack: If you’re not ready to remodel or you rent, things like marble or stone accessories, plants, and if there’s room, a chair or settee will give your bath an elevated sanctuary feel. Adding a bath shelf is an easy and affordable way to create an ultimate spa bath too!

Bold Dramatic Moves

Design: Maestri Studio | Photo: Jenifer McNeil Baker

The neutral trend transitioned into more earthy tones in 2023 and will get even bolder come the new year. "I think 2024 is going to be all about bold, dramatic moves," says Devon Wegman, founder and design director of Devon Grace Interiors in Chicago. "People are tired of playing it safe and sticking with neutrals, soft textures everywhere. Today, we're incorporating more and more graphic stone, provocative artwork, area rugs and large statement chandeliers in spaces."

Good news color lovers, that means color is definitely making a comeback in 2024.

Glam Metallics Are A Go

Cosentino Le Chic Eclectic Pearl Collection

Metallics always add a bit of luxe glamour to a space and 2024 takes them up a notch, using them in areas like kitchens and baths. According to the design report, designers chose metallic accents as their top up-and-coming trend, while homeowners rated it number two.

Rental hack:Add a vintage mirror, gold-based vase or lamps, or metallic drawer pulls to upgrade your decor.

Hotel Vibes

Design: JOSHUA SMITH | Photo: Lance Gerber

Travel can bring major inspo to your decor. According to the report, 70 percent of designers find inspiration from resorts and hotels. Look at bedding, art, and elegant details next time you're staying at or just dining at a resort or hotel. Even a thoughtfully designed Airbnb can inspire your design to upgrade your personal home style.

Rental hack: "Grand, luxurious floral arrangements are a hallmark of hotel lobbies," says Sarah Eilers of Houston-based Lucas/Eilers Design Associates. "Placing a floral arrangement on a console table or in an elegant vase in your entryway can set the tone for your entire home.”

Kitchen Is King

Design: Living With Lolo | Photo: Life Created

The central headquarters of any home, the kitchen remains a focal point for design. Homeowners are looking to upgrade their kitchens for their own use (the best appliances and conveniences) but also for entertaining their guests with comfortable spaces to sit and have conversation.

Investment in the kitchen remains the number one priority for homeowners and designers in terms of budget too. More than 80 percent of designers are now bringing kitchens to the backyard as well, says the Cosentino report.

Rental hack: Bring in furniture you can take with you that creates an inviting space for you and your guest; add a chandelier or pendant to replace rental "boob" lights; and create a counter "scape" with cutting board, vase, and cookbooks as a focal point.

Brown In All Its Shades

Design: Living with Lolo | Photo: Life Created

"We'll be drowning in brown in all the best ways in 2024," says Ramsey. "Think about coffee, cappuccino, and lattes and how those warm colors hit the spot just like your afternoon Starbucks fix." His current brown paint obsession? "Currently love Sherwin Williams - Iced Mocha 9092!"

Design: Living with Lolo | Photo: Life Created

Look to make brown your next color accent. Pair your woods and leathers with a complimentary color to offset the mix of brown tones. Greenery always helps to infuse more color too!

Patterns and Bold Marble

Design: Urbanology Designs | Photo: Matti Gresham

Designers all agree that the rustic farmhouse aesthetic is out for 2024. "I think it's time for the coastal California look to step aside. This came in hot after Modern Farmhouse faded away, and I think people are ready for more drama and uniqueness," adds Wegman. Don't second guess yourself in 2024 in all the ways, including decor -- the bolder you are, the better!

Reuse + Sustainability

Design: Urbanology | Photo: Matti Gresham

"People are more aware of the value of existing structures and objects and the waste created by discarding them. I think we’ll see design embracing and reimagining the old in new and exciting ways," says Kelly Jimenez, architect principal at Hoedemaker Pfeiffer.

Biophilic Design Elements

Photo by Charlotte May for Pexels

Bring the outdoors in for a healthy, happy home in 2024. "Biophilic design will thrive in 2024," says Ginger Curtis, CEO and founder of Urbanology Designs in Dallas. "This trend centers around bringing the outdoors inside, creating spaces that foster a stronger connection with nature. Expect to see more indoor plants, living green walls, natural materials like stone and wood, and large windows to maximize natural light and reduce the barrier between the interior and exterior."

Dearest gentle reader, if it were up to Lady Whistledown, the finest trend of the season would absolutely be the return of the cottagecore aesthetic. Bring on the floral dresses, ruching, and tulle because thanks to Bridgerton, we're glady welcoming cottagecore back into our current style rotation (if it ever left). Cottagecore has come and gone with the likes of period drama movies and TV shows á la Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey, and so many more. So whether you're frolicking in the English countryside, attending balls with Kings and Queens, or just simply catching up on Bridgerton season 3 from the comfort of your couch, we've got all the best dresses for the occasion that will have you looking like THE diamond of the season.

What is cottagecore?

Photo via House of CB

Cottagecore is an aesthetic or style that is inspired by "cottage living" — imagine the English countryside in the early 1900's. The clothing style is very reminiscent of a Jane Austen-inspired era with lots of feminine and flowy silhouettes. You'll notice the styles having corsets, ruffles, florals, and bows, so just think very effortlessly girly!

What are the best brands to shop for cottagecore aesthetic?

Photo via House of CB

The brands that immediately come to mind and encapsulate the "frolicking-in-the-english-countryside-while-waiting-for-your-star-crossed-lover" vibe are brands like Love Shack Fancy, House of CB, and Doen. I've personally shopped all of these and can attest that they are idyllic, gorgeous, and will have you feeling like the lead of a Bridgerton season in no time.

What should I watch to get inspired by the cottagecore aesthetic?

Photo via Netflix

Period dramas are perfect to get into this vibe, and some shows and films that I love to watch are Little Women, Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, Bridgerton(obvi), and anything from the Jane Austen-era! When you watch all of these shows, you'll get so much inspiration from the way they dress and styles they're wearing. I also love scrolling Pinterest to find inpso for what to wear in order to achieve this aesthetic!

Oprah Winfrey is much more than a legend. She's one of the reigning stars of daytime TV, creating such a memorable empire that just her first name carries weight. She's full of wisdomand loves celebrating the success of others. Excuse me, that's grounds for a standing ovation.

In addition to all of the things she's accomplished, Oprah has steadily added books to her book club list since 1996. To date, there are 105 titles she's read and chosen to share with others. If you're thinking, "That's a lot of books" then I agree. But, her goal is to highlight both seasoned and new writers who dare to weave together fiction as well as nonfiction works.

After going through the list, here's everything we think you need to add to your at-home library.

Image via Oprah Daily/Eli Schmidt

Yesterday, Oprah announced her book club's 105th pick On OprahDaily.com and CBS Mornings, where she appeared with author Colm Tóibín to discuss his newly released book Long Island. She had nothing but praise for the novel and said, "I was captivated. Tóibín builds the story around a woman whose life changes seemingly overnight with the news of her husband’s infidelity. It opens the door to her own secrets, grappling with choices she made long ago, urging her to break free from the silences she built around her life. A wonderful page-turner to start your summer reading.”

On OprahDaily.com and CBS Mornings, Oprah Winfrey excitedly shared her book club's 104th pick: The Many Lives of Mama Love by Lara Love Hardin. In a touching video, Oprah can be seen surprising Hardin in what feels like a "full circle moment." While trying to process her book being chosen as Oprah's next book club pick, Hardin can be heard saying, "I'm just overwhelmed right now. I'm so grateful."

It's a memoir that details how Hardin's past addiction to opiates caused her to make dire decisions that led her to serve jail time. Not only that, but Hardin eventually finds a way to show herself grace as she reconnects with her children and becomes an ally for other women who are incarcerated.

For a sneak peek of what you can expect in the novel, read an exclusive excerpt on OprahDaily.com!

Long Island by Colm Tóibín

Long Island tells the tale of Eilis Lacey and the discovery of her husband's infidelity. Things start off well enough with Eilis and her husband Tony Fiorello living near his family. The family spends a lot of time together and it feels like they have a quintessential bond that can't be broken.

But when Eilis discovers that a man's wife is carrying Tony's child and they don't want anything to do with the baby, she begins to start looking at her own desires as well as the things she's kept secret for the sake of her marriage. She ends up journeying to a familiar place to rediscover herself and it ignites an inner flame that she thought she lost.

Need an outfit for an upcoming wedding? How about a beach-front dinner? Or tropical destination vacation? Well this one clothing item can take you to all those places and more — slip dresses. They're tried and true, timeless and stylish, and functional and fashionable. And hey, Carrie Bradshaw boldly rocked one, very classically coined "the naked dress."

If you've seen the return of the naked dress trend, you're not alone. Even Sex and the City's Kristin Davis posted a cheeky little throwback of herself in a slip dress to "relive trends." And while the current dresses aren't that different from their predecessors, slip dresses really do come in so many different styles. From your typical black satin slip dress to a fun halter, blue slip, here are my favorite options for staying on trend now — and when it inevitably comes back around again. 😉

Shop Slip Dresses Here!

Target Women's Midi Perfect Slip Dress In Black

This simple black, satin slip will be great for so many occasions whether you want to dress it up or down with sandals; options are endless here! Plus it's listed at only $28! Talk about a bargain!

Reformation Aara Silk Dress

This blue silk number is #1 on my vacation wishlist. I think the lace detail is such a great nod to a vintage Chloe dress that Kendall Jenner was seen wearing this past year. Chic and timeless — my favorite combo!

Target Women's Lace Trim Maxi Slip Dress

The dark forest green color in this slip looks very elegant and luxe, but the price is very reasonable. This target slip dress is affordable yet stylish. I think this one would look great styled for a wedding with nude strappy, gladiator heels and a nude clutch.

Abercrombie Slip Asymmetrical Midi Dress

This Abercrombie dress might be one of my favorites on this list because of the stunning yet sexy detail on the lace on the ends. I think it would be styled perfectly for a night out or dinner with black pumps and a red lip!

Target Women's Midi Perfect Slip Dress In Pink

This Target pink slip dress is so versatile but it also has the bonus of having sizes from XS all the way up to XXXXL so it can fit many different body types. The color is also perfect for the summertime!

Reformation Provence Silk Dress

This dress had to be added to our roundup because it is such a popular and trending style at the moment. I've seen so many influencers and fashion girlies wearing it recently and I understand why! It's such a classic go-to style that is also very flattering. I love this one and will absolutely be getting it for myself, too!

Abercrombie Satin Slip Asymmetrical Midi Dress

Abercrombie is THE place to shop for any of your slip or satin dress needs. They have endless styles and so many cute options. I love this one because of the unique color and asymmetric shape of the slip. So cute and will be adding to my wishlist for sure!

Reformation Barrow Silk Dress

The blue color of this dress is so divine! The shape is also very flattering as well. I love Reformation for their silk dresses because they last so long and feel so high quality. I feel like a million bucks every time I wear one!

Abercrombie Scarf Slip Mini Dress

Another Abercrombie find that is too good to pass up. This one is donning a super chic style with the scarf around the neck. It looks like it belongs in a castle somewhere in France. Tres chic!!

J.Crew Petite Plume Women's Silk Cosette Nightdress With Lace

And to end, I thought I'd add this classic LBD with a typical slip style and a bit of lace on top. I love this one because it's an investment into your future wardrobe and will be worn for so many years to come.

Somehow, we have reached the 20th anniversary of A Cinderella Story. (2004 really was THAT year. The Notebook, A Cinderella Story,Mean Girls). Behind the scenes of an interview with the Today Show, Chad Michael Murray (who played Austin Ames in the movie opposite Hilary Duff's Sam) teased some kind of celebration coming our way!

www.tiktok.com

Replying to @Mystery bagel tw: emotional ‼️ one of the most iconic scenes #cinderellastory #chadmichaelmurray

"Do you realize this July is the 20th anniversary of A Cinderella Story?" Chad Michael Murray asks the camera. "Next week, we're going to do a little Austin Ames wink and nod to at the fans. You'll see."

There are literally so many things Chad could do in honor of the anniversary, which is happening July 16. The actor has played basketball at his One Tree Hill reunions, so maybe he'd play some football. He could also break out his old costume or reenact the iconic "Waiting for you is like waiting for rain in this drought. Useless and disappointing," scene with Hilary Duff — but TBH I hope whatever he does, he does it with Hilary. This would be the reunion I've been waiting for!!

Image via Kevin Winter/Getty Images

Chad Michael Murray has talked about the fun of filming A Cinderella Story in the past — and how hilarious it is his character supposedly couldn't recognize Hilary Duff in the mask. "If you go to masquerade mall and a girl you see almost every day is wearing a small mask and her entire face is exposed and you still can't recognize her, you should probably see an eye doctor... among a few other doctors," he jokes with E! News.

How will you be celebrating the anniversary of A Cinderella Story this July? Let us know on Facebook!

If there's one word to describe Bridgerton, it's romantic. The costumes, the makeup, the press tour moments between season 3 leads Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton — all of it leaves me giggling and kicking my feet. And apparently, love might be in the air for two other Bridgerton cast members: Luke Thompson and Harriet Cains!

twitter.com

Luke Thompson (who plays Benedict Bridgerton) and Harriet Cains (Philippa Featherington) were spotted at the Vanity Fair EE BAFTA Rising Star Party together, and they were getting cozy. The deeper I go into the rabbit hole the more I find and suddenly, this is my favorite (potential) celebrity couple!

www.instagram.com

These besties are clearly so comfortable around each other, and aren't afraid to get up close and personal. (A fact that might scandalize Harriet's character Philippa Featherington. It seems pretty par for the course for Benedict Bridgerton). Luke Thompson and Harriet Cains might be the couple I'm rooting for, but fans are also hoping to see Benedict find love with Sophie Beckett in Bridgerton season 4. And Luke is expecting to learn even more about his character the longer the show sticks around.

"The more you stay with a character, the more you start to see the chinks in the armor, a bit of vulnerability," he told Vestal Mag in 2022. "Benedict is no exception this season, no matter how blasé he seems to want to be."

I love seeing how Benedict isn't afraid to be his goofy self, and how much he looks out for his siblings (particularly Eloise, which is my favorite relationship on the show!), but things might change once he really, truly falls in love. I don't think Sophie will make him act any less himself, but I'm excited to see how she brings out different parts of his personality we haven't seen yet — and emphasizes the aspects we know and love.

Check out our Bridgerton season 3 interview for more news on your favorite show, and see if the Bridgerton World Tour is coming to a city near you!
