Want To Read More Books In 2024? These 8 Speed-Reading Tips Should Help

how to read more books in 2024

My recent favorite book discovery came from a random trip to Books-A-Million with my sister. It even seemed serendipitous given how often I've written about book clubs. Titled The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires, it's the first book in a while to hold my attention and encourage me to read more books this year. Like many hopeful readers out there, I routinely get distracted whenever I try to focus on a new book and can rarely remember anything I've read once I finish it.

After a lot of trial and error, I figured out that I was paying attention to too many other things while diving into my latest read. Once I was able to quiet my mind and eliminate distractions, it only took me two days to finish Grady Hendrix' genre-bending horror book. If you've been trying to figure out how to read more books while navigating your growing TBR list, we've got you. After combing Reddit threads, tuning into our favorite BookTok-ers, and gleaning advice from disciplined readers who cycle through over 50 books each year, here are the eight best tips to help you read more books in 2024.

What's the #1 secret for reading more books in 2024?

Image via Photo by Joseph Ruwa/Pexels

Come in close. Closer. Okay, stop! The secret is that you need to decide how many books you want to read even if it's only 12. That's one book per month which is super doable! Also, it doesn't hurt to be genuinely excited about reading. With these two things in mind, you'll have space to read more books without it feeling like a chore! Apps like Goodreads help you set your personalized reading challenge and will give you updates throughout the year on your progress to keep you on track.

Create a personalized reading nook

Image via Photo by George Milton/Pexels

You'll never have to ask me if I think it's necessary to carve out a small space for you to work or engage in a fun hobby. It's something I've done since I was a little girl and it's helped me to focus on whatever I'm doing. In terms of reading more books, I've found sectioning off a corner in my office to dedicate to reading has actually been inspiring. I have an inexpensive stand with some of my favorite books on it. Read more on our design inspiration for creating a perfect reading nook here.

Create a TBR pile for the books you want to read in order

Image via cottonbro studio/Pexels

As much as I love reading, it's easy to find books in random places because I've run out of room on both of my bookshelves. It's not hard to find rom-com, thriller, or self improvement books in the kitchen or on my bedroom floor so I came up with another solution: make reading piles. I have them sectioned by genre and it's actually helping me to focus on one book at a time.

Document your reading journey

Image via Vlada Karpovich/Pexels

You don't have to necessarily use a reading journal, but it's helpful to document when you started reading a book. You can also write down standout quotes and moments to help you remember the book long after you've read it. Summary Guru said, "A reading diary can help you set goals, will let you know when you need to have read each book by to hit your target, and will allow you to record your thoughts after you finish each book."

If you want to try another route, you can take a cue from BookTok and verbally review your books! Not sure about becoming an accidental book-influencer? Summary Guru suggests taking to Goodreads or Amazon to "publish a good review!"

Power up your kindle or try an audiobook

Image via freestocks.org/Pexels

I cherish having the physical copy of a book in my hands, but seeing my TBR pile can be overwhelming at times. I've found that I'm able to read more chapters when I'm utilizing a kindle or my iPad. Audiobooks can be a wonderful option if you’re looking for something to help you power through chores, or if you have tired eyes after using a computer all day. Swap out your go-to playlist or podcast for an audiobook on your next walk, and you'll be surprised by how much you can get through each week.

Eliminate distractions

Image via Andres Ayrton/Pexels

I've been known to have a book in my hand while listening to a podcast and a vlog on YouTube at the same. I call the latter my "background noise." The thing is, I don't focus on what I'm reading when I'm listening to two different things. If this sounds familiar, hi! Let's work on eliminating distractions so you don't have to worry about reading the same line in your books over and over.

If you have to have background noise, opt for turning your space fan on or instrumental music so it can serve as white noise.

Host your own book club meeting with a friend or two

Image via Ketut Subiyanto/Pexels

Starting your own book club doesn't have to be formal nor does it have to be documented for social media. You can round up one to two of your closest friends and create a bi-weekly or monthly get-together to discuss a book you're all currently obsessing over. In one our favorite romanticize your life tricks, you can host a picnic and bring a yummy charcuterie board to enjoy while your talk shop.

Read books you actually enjoy

Image via cottonbro studio/Pexels

It sounds simple, but why labor through the English lit classics when your heart yearns for a contemporary romance novel? Read what YOU want to read — not just a book that is critically-acclaimed, buzzy, or what other people rave and recommend to you. Once you find the genres that speak to you the most, you'll have no trouble cancelling your plans to sit down with a good book.

If you're not in the habit of daily reading, start with smaller texts like poetry books or short story and essay compilations. In building up the ritual, you'll train yourself to look forward to your quiet moment to read each day and will breeze through your reading goals in no time.

Elena Richardson and Mia Warren go to warn in this moving novel about classism. It dares to ask readers who deserves to be seen as a shining example of a mother as both women eventually face how far they're willing to go to protect those they love.

For Elena, Shaker Heights is all she's ever known. She's married, has four children, and is well-loved in her community. She believes that she's been able to achieve everything she has because she knows how to be the woman who doesn't color outside of the lines.

On the other hand, Mia is an artist who knows all about creating masterpieces with elements that are otherwise seen as messy. She and her daughter Pearl become a little too close to the Richardsons, finding their lives dangerously intertwined with them.

When a custody battle ensues that involves the young daughter of Mia co-worker, she finds herself willing to dismantle the pretty facade of not only Shaker Heights, but Elena as well.

Georgie, All Along by Kate Clayborn

Georgia Mulcahy is the ultimate people-pleaser and her career is the epitome of it. She'd probably always be that way had it not been for a unexpected career change that sends her packing back home. Begrudgingly, she goes and soon discovers a diary where she once wrote down all of her heart's desires.

This inspires her to start checking things off her life's to-do list so that she can really start living. It's just that Levi Fanning is somehow her unexpected roommate while she's at her parents' home and his offer to help her complete her list feels like something she didn't know she'd encounter.

The more they spend time together, the more Georgie feels like there's more to life than checking off things on a list.

The Mitford Affair by Marie Benedict

The Mitford sisters have always been the talk of the town, but nothing is as shocking as when one of the sisters decides she'd rather devote herself to a fascist leader. Another sister decides it's worth following her and this leads people to whisper salacious things about her alleged relationship with Hitler.

As the war between Great Britain and Germany threaten to spill over, their sister Nancy can't help but wonder what her sisters have gotten themselves into. She'll have to decide where her own allegiance lies.

Expiration Dates by Rebecca Serle

Daphne Bell has always known how long she'll be with a man before moving on to the next one. It's not that she's flighty, but more so that the universe literally tells her what to expect. These little nudges have been in her life for over two decades and it's something she's learned to accept.

However, the universe decides to be cryptic by only clueing her in on the name of the next man she'll spend time with. It's odd because if Jake knew the things she did, there's a chance he could walk away from her forever and that's the last thing Daphne wants.

On a Quiet Street by Seraphina Nova Glass

Brighton Hills appears to be a picturesque place to live. It's a community that beautifully blends luxurious living with the gorgeous nature that surrounds it and the neighbors always have their eyes on each other.

However, Cora's desire to find out if her husband is having an affair leads her to form a partnership with Paige. She's the one neighbor that Cora knows keeps a watchful eye on what's going on in Brighton Hills after her son died.

The two women work together to discover what Cora's husband is really up to, but what they may stumble across will send a shockwave through Brighton Hills.

Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalo (Kindle)

The Prince of Envy is struggling to save his demon court in Throne of the Fallen, but he's determined to find a way to do so. He's not afraid of the magic and mysterious people that keep crossing his path because nothing can stop his fierce desire to regain the control he once has.

Things are seemingly no different from Miss Camilla Antonius because she's facing blackmail by someone who literally makes her skin crawl. In order to change her fate, she reluctantly joins forces with The Prince of Envy and thus begins their dangerous journey through the Underworld.

It's the one place that may pull them together in more ways than one.

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen (Kindle)

Hart spends most of his time patrolling Tanria, but the loneliness does nothing to keep him company. Things couldn't be any different for Mercy though. She's tasked with making sure things are running properly at Birdsall & Son Undertakers and doesn't have time for anyone's foolery.

Ironically, Hart and Mercy both have taken up writing mysterious letters to strangers who have become their friends. The thing is they're not aware they've been communicating with each other.

It's a classic enemies-to-loves fantasy novel that'll make you smile with glee.

July 1 — the officially mid-year point for 2024 — is fast-approaching, and it's a good checkpoint for how you’re doing when it comes to reaching your 2024 goals. Most of us rolled into the new year feeling hopeful that we could meet a list of resolutions by years-end. How are those going? If you’re not where you’d like to be by now, here’s a little help to get you back on track.

Image via Dream Inn

I recently spent a weekend at the Dream Inn in Santa Cruz, CA with meditation master Sarah Vie, author of I Wish I'd Known, and about 35 other women to uncover emotions that might be holding us back. A beachside hotel called the Dream Inn couldn’t have been a more perfect location to ponder life’s biggest questions – without kids, dogs, partners, work, and a house to pull us out of our “me” zone.

I started the weekend off a little bit of a mess: stressed from traffic, organizing a dog sitter, and making sure I could log off from work for the weekend. Any talk of meditation and manifesting my dreams was not on my radar when there was a house to clean! Bills to pay! Kid to care for! I realize now how close I was to burnout.

My weekend with Sarah manifesting my dreams at the Dream Inn pulled me back, set me straight, and transformed my mood and energy in ways I never expected.

Here’s what I learned about manifesting your dreams right now.

1.Write down your dreams: And don’t just write them down – be specific about what they look like and how they feel when you’ve finally reached them. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in that moment. Where are you? What does it feel, smell, sound like? What are you doing when you reach them? Use visualization tools like a vision board placed front and center; start a daily meditation routine that keeps you focused on your purpose; and try saying your goals aloud to yourself (if that’s not too weird). These practices can help keep you driven and focused.

2. Write down the “show-me’s”: According to Sarah, this is the how. Write down the small steps for achieving bigger goals. Be consistent. It’s a lot easier to give up on your dreams, when the steps for getting there are not already part of your routine. “We can't just do something one time and expect to change a habit,” said Sarah. Reframe how you think about reaching your goals – a mindset of will do vs. maybe will – and create a routine around the steps.

3. Practice gratitude. Practice gratitude for what you already have – this has a lot to do with shifting your energy and what you attract because what we feel inside attracts the same energy outside. Start a gratitude journal or try these gratitude prompts.

4. Set a daily intention. Sarah suggests using LSD: listen to yourself, stop negative thinking, and declare your goals. Every morning find a quiet space to listen to yourself and your needs – this may be actual meditation, or sitting with a cup of tea, or taking a walk or hike. Set an intention for the day that will help you reach your goals.

5. Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations. We talked a lot about energies and magnets – what we put out there, we attract so if you're feeling stressed and chaotic guess what's coming right back at you? Underneath that stress though is usually fear – fear of not seeming perfect or saying no or not doing what your true inner self wants to do. Replace those negative beliefs with positive ones; treat yourself with kindness and understanding; and allow yourself to heal slowly to reach a healthier way of living. "Replace those old stories you tell yourself and redefine them into something positive, so your conscious mind starts to believe you can," says Sarah.

6. Focus on what brings you joy. Spend more time doing the things that bring you joy and your energy will shift to a more positive mindset. A positive mindset is key to achieving your goals, attracting positive experiences, and living the life that you want.

7. Stay accountable. Whether it's a friend or partner or a journal that you check in with on a daily or weekly basis, find ways to hold yourself accountable for your goals and check off those small steps you decide are the best way to get there. You got this!

Amazon's adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s famed Red, White & Royal Blueblew our minds with its perfectly extravagant and messy royal romance. Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz stole our hearts with their antics, proving that love isn't always as cookie cutter as we think it should be. Not only that, but it was the LGBT film we never knew we needed until it hit the big screen last year.

If you've been missing Prince Henry and Alex, you're in luck because a sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue is officially coming! Here's everything we know about the latest developments!

Is the main cast returning?

Image via Jonathan Prime/Prime Video

I'm happy to share that Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are returning! I honestly don't think the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel would be the same if they weren't.

However, no other cast information has been released! Hopefully we'll see Uma Thurman and Clifton Collins, Jr. reprise their roles!

What's the sequel going to be about?

Image via Prime Video

As of yet, Variety reports that not much has been confirmed about the sequel's plot or release date. My guess is that there the two lovebirds will have to juggle new responsibilities and mishaps.

What the original plot of "Red, White & Royal Blue?"

The novel centers around the character of Alex Claremont-Diaz, a first son of the United States, and his romantic relationship with Prince Henry, British royalty.

We cannot wait to see what new adventures are two lovebirds will cook up in Red, White & Royal Blue, but for now we’ll be rereading (and rereading) RWRB.

Every time I hear about a new celebrity wedding, I immediately scour the internet for photos. Was it a destination wedding? Were there other fun celeb guests? What did they WEAR?! When Sofia Richie-Grainge got married last year, I was glued to my phone checking for updates on what outfit she would stun us with next. Call me crazy, but I just love a celebrity wedding.

Given that the dresses — from chic and lowkey to largely extravagant — are my favorite part of a celebrity wedding, I did some research and found my top 10 favorite celebrity wedding dresses in recent years so we can obsess over them together! Keep reading to see some really stunning bridal looks!

Alex Cooper

www.instagram.com

Our most recent bride to date is none other than Call Her Daddypodcaster, Alex Cooper. She stunned us all with multiple wedding dresses paired with a natural hair and makeup look. This one had to be my favorite because of the silhouette — it honestly screams vintage and class and I so absolutely love it! She caused some controversy for not wearing mascara, but I think it's a beautiful, unique choice! She looks like the perfect, blushing bride!

Sofia Richie-Grainge

www.instagram.com

Sofia Richie-Grainge had the entire internet in a complete chokehold over her wedding outfits, and she's since deemed herself a fashion icon because of it. She quite literally caused a "quiet-luxury" frenzy with her revamped style of late, and her wedding dress was no different. TBH, this whole wedding is at the top of my list in terms of style, venue, and location. Everything about it looked idyllic and stunning; just like her!

Hailey Bieber

www.instagram.com

I'm a huge Hailey Bieber fan, and while I enjoy her style as a whole, one of my most favorite looks of hers is this wedding dress. She looks regal and sexy at the same time, and her veil is also incredibly unique, embroidered with "til death do us part." This was created by the ever-iconic Virgil Abloh before his passing, and he did an incredible job on it. It truly makes us remember what an icon and inspiration he was to the fashion community!

Erin Foster

www.instagram.com

This look from Erin Foster was surprising to me because it has such a vintage-feel to it! It's kind of reminiscent of The Princess Bride with the adorable peasant-sleeves and flowing gown — both sweet details to this gorgeous dress. It's one of my favorites for it's simple, bohemian style!

Priyanka Chopra

www.instagram.com

This was one of Priyanka Chopra-Jonas's many looks, but it's definitely her most classic bridal gown. It was regal and chic, with a silhouette that was truly made perfectly for her! The intricate detail and buttons on the dress are also a work of art! Put it in the Louvre!

Lily Collins

www.instagram.com

Speaking of art, this dress looks like a Victorian vision! I absolutely love Lily Collins's cape, giving her a Grace Kelly-esque style that exudes royalty and class. And TBH, I would expect nothing else from Lily! Truly, one of the most beautiful wedding dresses I've seen in recent years!

Taylor Hill

www.instagram.com

This is also a favorite because I've never seen a venue/location and dress tie together so seamlessly! The countryside vibe of the venue with the whimsical feel of her dress make for the perfect pairing. She looks phenomenal (as always), but looks particularly breathtaking in this sweet and charming style of dress wit the off-the-shoulder ruffles and bows. A 10/10 indeed!

Bel Powley

www.instagram.com

Bel Powley is someone that surprised me with how absolutely gorgeous her wedding dresses and outfits were. I hadn't kept up with her style too much before, but when I saw these Miu Miu pieces from her wedding, I was truly SHOOK. And while the dresses were amazing, the accessories were an absolute moment. Her ballet slipper heels, hair bows, and draped pearl earrings gave off vintage dream vibes! I love this one!

Jasmine Tookes

www.instagram.com

I keep up with model Jasmine Tookes for style inspiration all the time. If you're looking for someone who exudes class and quiet luxury, then look no further! So, naturally, her wedding was no different. It was luxurious, classy, and spectacular. This lace dress really made her look like royalty, and the diamond-encrusted headband was a lovely touch.

www.instagram.com

If you haven't seen Alexandra Daddario's wedding pictures yet, you must go scroll for them because it was a pretty huge affair! It took place in New Orleans and she looked like quite the Louisiana beauty. This gown and umbrella combo was such a look, and I can't get over how absolutely stunning she was in every single one of her bridal outfits! Definitely a top dress I've seen in the past couple of years!
