Many of them came back with a similar answer: a drapey trench coat or vest. It’s not so surprising — after all, a lightweight topper is a no-brainer for tricky fall weather, and adds instant chic to any outfit. “My most complimented piece (far and away) is this convertible trench by Malene Birger. I bought it at Hampden Clothing in Charleston. While it was a big splurge, the color and cut are absolutely perfect, and it is one of those statement pieces that I constantly get asked about. As an added bonus, you can separate it, wearing it as a cropped jacket or a longer vest. I really hope they bring it back this year; I would die for it in black or khaki. It goes with everything I own and makes me feel great.”
