Instagram Will Keep You Up-to-Date on Live Events
Instagram has declared war. When they released Instagram stories a few weeks ago, everyone immediately called out the social network for its too-close-to-be-coincidental version of Snapchat’s stories. Now Instagram is coming for one of Snapchat’s big draws: The ability to see what’s happening around the world as it happens.
Event Channels, which officially rolled out on Instagram yesterday, allows users to see live events around the world as they’re happening — concerts, sports, award shows, whatever you like. You’ll be able to find it under the “Explore” tab in Instagram. And just like the rest of the content there, it’s personalized for each user, based on their likes and interests.
While the channel offerings won’t be as niche as “Golden Retrievers” — a recommendation we may or may not have watched earlier today — Event Channels will recommend artists’ concerts or beloved sports teams’ games as they’re happening. Instagram has been pushing hard for its users to embrace video lately. From 64 curated video channels that the app is currently testing, to the new stories, Instagram is being pretty aggressive in the video market.
Your move, Snapchat.
