Instagram has evolved far beyond pictures of food and puppies (although we do admit to still posting both those things frequently). The social media channel has become a way for us to document important milestones and has allowed companies to better connect with their customer. Our feeds are swimming with pretty clothing, jewelry and home goods fresh from our favorite makers and designers. We love the constant inspiration, but we have to admit, there’s still one major flaw in Instagram’s platform: no linkage.
Say you’re totally obsessed with those jeans you saw on your feed. If you want to buy them, you have to leave the app, head to the site and hope you can find what you’re looking for. Well, if you’re an Instagram-crazed Marc Jacobs fan, this is no longer a problem for you. The brand’s beauty branch has recently launched a new initiative that will make shopping their feed a million times easier. This isn’t the first time the brand has toyed with blending social media and e-commerce. During NYFW they accepted tweets as payment. 140 characters for a mini perfume? We’ll take it.
For the new shoppable Instagram, you first have to register your email address and Instagram handle on Marc Jacobs’ site. After that, go ahead and browse Marc Beauty’s feed and double tap anything that catches your eye with the hashtag, #shopmjb. You’ll then receive a weekly email with purchase details for all of the products featured in any of the photos you liked over the course of that week. Beyond straightforward links to buy, each email will also offer product information, ingredients and even application tips.
The idea behind this is so simple, yet totally effective. We’re seeing a whole bunch of brands jumping on this bandwagon in the near future. A more shoppable Instagram is something we can totally get behind, even if our wallets aren’t yet on board.
