This Is the Heartbreaking Reason Oscar Isaac Hasn’t Been Working the Last Few Months
For many, the love of your mother is one that can’t be beat. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we’re thinking about all the inspiration that moms can bring, but for some of us, the holiday can be bittersweet. Just ask Star Wars‘ Oscar Isaac, who recently admitted the reason he’s been out of the spotlight since last year’s star-making turn in The Force Awakens has been his mother.
In a new interview in The Guardian, the actor talks about everything from his upbringing, his background (he’s part Guatemalan), and his nomadic childhood — caused, in part, by Hurricane Andrew. The most heartbreaking part of the profile, however, is when Isaac talks about his recently departed mom.
“I was really fortunate to be able to just be with her the entire time and not be off on some set somewhere. At first, we didn’t know how ill she was, and she didn’t either, but as things progressed, it was much easier to say no to things. At a certain point, it was like, clearly: ‘I’m not going to be doing anything.’”

And he didn’t do anything but stay by his mom’s side until she passed away in February of this year, but not before he got a chance to show her his newest movie, The Promise (that’s already got it’s own internet drama) which he says is “A great movie for moms.”
