Fans of period dramas quickly fell in love with HBO's The Gilded Age after it first premiered in 2022. Set in the opulent yet turbulent world of 1880s New York City, where the clash between old money and new wealth is reshaping society, the story centers on Marian Brook, a young woman who leaves behind her quiet life in rural Pennsylvania to live with her wealthy aunts.

As she steps into the world of high society, she finds herself caught between the expectations of the established elite and the rising influence of ambitious newcomers, particularly the powerful Russell family. While the country undergoes sweeping economic and cultural changes, Marian must decide whether to conform to the era's strict social codes or carve out a future of her own.

Now, however, the stakes are about to change in season 3, which is currently airing on HBO and Max. Ahead, here is everything we know so far about the latest iteration of The Gilded Age.

What is The Gilded Age season 3 about?

HBO

Julian Fellowes, the creator of the series, said of the third season, "If you married the wrong guy, you were in lifelong trouble." That's because the latest season of The Gilded Age is poised to center on the constraints and consequences women face after breaking into New York's elite social circles.

Gladys Russell, played by Taissa Farmiga, is ready to follow her heart and tie the knot with a man she loves. However, her mother, Betha, portrayed by Carrie Coon, has her sights set on a strategic match with the Duke of Buckingham, a nobleman more taken with the Russell's wealth than with Gladys herself.

Meanwhile, Denée Benton's character, Peggy Scott, finds herself navigating the complexities of love and identity when a courtship within Newport's Black upper class exposes painful truths about colorism.

Season 3 of The Gilded Age doesn't just ask who gets to marry for love, though. It questions whether love can or should be the deciding factor for women in a time when their futures were often determined by the men they wed. The series also explores how it's nearly impossible to leave an unhappy marriage. Several characters confront the obstacles to divorce in an era when personal freedom, particularly for women, was anything but guaranteed.

"The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic and social change, when empires were built, but no victory came without sacrifice. Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society," reads the official season logline. "Across the street, the Brook household is thrown into chaos as Agnes refuses to accept Ada's new position as lady of the house."

"Peggy meets a handsome doctor from Newport whose family is less than enthusiastic about her career," it continues. "As all of New York hastens toward the future, their ambition may come at the cost of what they truly hold dear."

Is there a trailer for The Gilded Age season 3?

How historically accurate is the Gilded Age?

HBO

The Gilded Age is very historically accurate in terms of aesthetic details but also the situations the characters find themselves in (although it has also been referred to as a "camp melodrama" by historians). And even if a majority of the central characters are fictional, they're inspired by people who really existed.

“Real-life historical figures are a hugely important part of our Gilded world," executive producer David Crockett told Vogue. "These characters not only serve to give a fuller sense of what it might have been like to live during this time, but also help to highlight some of the debates that real people were having."

What was the biggest problem of the Gilded Age?

HBO

There was a huge class divide during the Gilded Age (the period in America between the 1870s to the early 1900s) that separated the working class' difficult lives from the wealthy business owners' luxurious ones.

Will there be a season 4 of The Gilded Age?

the gilded age season 3

HBO

We haven't gotten an official season 4 announcement yet, but we do know creator and writer Julian Fellowes is bringing season 3 to a wonderful end just in case it's the last installment.

“I don’t think we do have a final stopping place because we’re not told there’ll be a fourth series or a fifth or whatever,” he tells TV Insider. “But each time you have to reinvent the show in order to give it a new dynamic to fit its new proportions. And I think that is part of our job. That’s part of what you do if you write a series for television.”

“So in a sense, each [season] has to have a satisfactory conclusion given what’s taken place within the series, but an open end where we may be going to," he continues. "That is the sort of double discipline that we write to really.”
