20 Hairstyles That’ll Look FAB Under a Hat

When it comes to winter headwear your options are endless: snuggly beanies, chic Panama toppers, cozy head wraps, ear muffs… the list goes on. We’re all for bracing those cold days under the warmth of some grade A millinery, but there is always one obvious downside to wrapping up that noggin: the oh-so-dreaded hat hair. Crimped + flat tresses is never a good situation, but alas, we have a solution (or 20). Just because you’re wearing a hat doesn’t mean you can’t have a killer hairstyle going on underneath. Next time you pop on a lid, try out one of these hairdos for a style that’ll look good with or without a cap.

1. Triple Threat: With a blowout, a braid and a cool segmented twist, this vlogger has the whole hat hair thing totally nailed. (via YouTube)

2. Stick Straight 2nd Day ‘Do: We love a natural mane under winter hats, but we have to admit these straightened locks also look amazing. The styled hair definitely amps up the drama factor, and this would work extra well on a second day ‘do when you run out of dry shampoo :-X (Hat via ASOS)

3. French Braid Side Twist: If you want to get those pesky bangs out of the way (and avoid that awkward hair dent) try out our trusty tutorial, which shows you how to incorporate your fringe into a side braid. (via Brit + Co)

4. Gibson Roll: Sport this ultra elegant ‘do at a wedding one day and under a fedora the next. With a little practice it will only take you about five minutes. (via Cup of Jo)

5. Wavy Side Bob: This look is stunning without a hat, but add in some rockin’ headwear and the asymmetrical ‘do will totally pop. (via Brit + Co)

6. Fabulously Fringed: If you’re committed to your chosen headwear and not at all worried about the awkward crimp it will leave in your bangs, knock that hat back a bit and show off that beautiful fringe. This looks like a fab way to show off a new trim. (Hat via ASOS)

7. Segmented Pigtails: Stopped wearing pigtails in grade school? Jump back into the playful trend with these bubbly ponies. (via Brit + Co)

8. Baby Braid: If you’re into the braided look but don’t want a full updo, here’s the perfect in-between. French braid the front to keep it our of your face and then simply let the rest of the twisted hair hang down. (via Jillian Harris)

9. Knot It Up: This tutorial starts with you literally making a knot with your hair, so that’s kind of awesome. Try this fancy ponytail with a hat that doesn’t sit too low on the nape of your neck so you can show it off. (via Brit + Co)

10. Braided Bun: Start this look by creating a classic low braid. Take one of your three strands in one hand and push the braid up to the nape of your neck with the other. After your bun scrunches up, twist the tail you’ve created around it and pin. (via A Beautiful Mess)

11. Totally Twisted: Rather than a basic low pony, try this take on the classic style by adding in a few twists. This will look great under a hat, but also totally pretty on its own. (via Brit + Co)

12. Twisted Sister: Wowza! This updo is a total stunner and it’s shockingly easy. Pop on a hat to make it look like a low messy bun and then take it off for the full reveal. (via The Beauty Department)

13. Messy Fishtails: These loose, messy fishtails start showing off their plait below where your hat would hang, making this possibly the most perfect hat hairstyle ever. (via Brit + Co)

14. Braided Bliss: If you’re rocking a head wrap that leaves the crown of your head exposed, fill it up with crazy braids. This tutorial shows you how to do a look that includes not only a braided crown, but also a small, cascading side braid. (via Refinery29)

15. Triple Twisted Ponytail: Quick, easy and totally chic. If the other wrapped pony was a bit too twisted for you, try this option, which is a little bit more subtle. (via Twist Me Pretty)

16. Flawless Down ‘Do: Just because you’re sporting headwear doesn’t mean you have to tame those springy curls. Let them go crazy under the protection of a brimmed hat. (via Brit + Co)

17. Top Knot: Fill in the hole of a head wrap with a full bun. Keep it neat by using the sock trick or just tie it up with a rubber band for a super quick, pretty-messy look. (via Elle)

18. Friendship Fishtail: Put a cool spin on a fishtail by adding in colored string. If your hat is pretty simple, here’s a fun way to add some color to your look. (via A Beautiful Mess)

19. Rope Bun: If you guys haven’t tried a rope twist yet, it’s time. It’s totally easier than a braid and looks awesome. Leave it down and to the side or do like this pretty lady and pin it up into a low bun. (A Cup of Jo)

20. Three Twisted Buns: If you’re looking for the ultimate lazy morning, try this tutorial, which shows you how to create a voluminous wave by sleeping on twisted buns the night before. Wake up, shake out that crazy mane, pop on a hat and head out the door. (via Brit + Co)

Browsing through Pinterest for hairstyle inspo is honestly a favorite pastime of mine. Lately, I've had braids on the brain, scrolling through summer-inspired styles, and I'm kind of obsessed. So many celebs have been spotted in braids recently — especially our fave Taylor Swift who sports the style almost every time she's papped as of late. And while the tried-and-true simple braid is always a smooth move, there are so many different ways to incorporate braids into your hair for summer! We chatted with braids specialist, Ellie Mulqueen and founder of The Roslyn, Katelyn Ellsworth to learn more about these sweet styles. So keep scrolling for even more ways to add a little flair to your hair with our favorite braided hairstyles!

Half-Up Braided Crown

Photo via Ellie Mulqueen

This is a super simple style that we'd love to see you rock! And we have all the details on how you can achieve it! Our hair expert, Mulqueen, says, "Take two small sections of hair from each side of your head, braid them, and secure them at the back of your head to create a braided crown effect while leaving the rest of your hair down. You can dress this style up or down, it’s perfect for summer!" And voila, it's as easy as that! We can not wait to try this one. It's perfect for weddings or any events where you want to dress up your hair a little bit!

Bubble Braids

Photo via Getty

One of our favorite looks for summer are forever and always bubble braids! To achieve this, you simply need colorful hair bands and lots of braided sections to add texture.

Ellsworth says, "Braids are amazing for the summer and can be worn in so many different ways. Styling, even the most basic of braids can be fun. Using glitter, earrings, or even pops color with string or extensions is always a fun way to dress up a basic “B” braid. Using multiple braid techniques on one style is going to be seen a lot this year in festivals and in the wild." She adds, "Taking it back to Brittany style with crimps/waves and micro braids will be making it back into 2024 summertime. So get your accessories and your braid guides ready to the room with your style and accessorized braids."

Bubble braids are definitely the perfect way to standout and add some statement pieces to your hairstyle! Throw in some butterfly clips, and you're a Y2K goddess for sure!

Fishtail braid

Photo via Ellie Mulqueen

One bonus about this braid? It keeps your hair out of your face and from getting knotted. Mulqueen says, "Adding braids into your hairstyles for summer is a great way to keep your hair healthy and tangle free!" And this fishtail braid is sure to protect your hair in such a cute way! Simply take a piece from either side and tuck it in-between; just repeat this until you get the braid you want!

Ponytail Braid

We simply adore this look on Zendaya, and we definitely think this style will will pop up more and more with the rise of tenniscore and impending beach days! It's so simple that all you need to do is put your hair in a slicked-back ponytail, braid the ponytail like you would normally, then put in a bow for added effect! And there you have a chic, fun hairstyle for the summer!

Floral Fun

Photo via Ellie Mulqueen

I absolutely love this braid hairstyle for summer! You can find some flowers (fresh or fake) and pin them to your hair with either clips or bobby-pins and there you have it; a fresh bouquet braid! However, if you're less interested in (or don't have time for) the DIY of it all, you can also just buy clips that have these details on them already at Target or Amazon. I love how elegant this style looks, especially for the upcoming wedding season! This looks straight from our Pinterest board and I need to try it so don't mind me running to Trader Joe's for some fresh flowers immediately...

Braided Bun

Photo via Ellie Mulqueen

For this style, it may seem complicated, but it's actually quite simple! You braid a tiny section of hair (like the small, center braid above) and then do a very loose fishtail braid underneath it. For a fishtail, all you do is divided the hair into two sections and take pieces from the outer edges of either side and drag them to the middle one at a time. Then put your hair into a messy, chic bun like so! We love this fun style for wedding season, too!

The Lion King is one of the most beloved Disney movies — like, of all time — which means that its fans are VERY protective of it. Everyone was a little apprehensive about the live-action remake, but whether you loved it or hated it, one thing's for sure: the cast knocked it out of the park. Mufasa: The Lion King brings back all your favorites (including Beyoncé, Donald Glover, and James Earl Jones, no biggie) but we'll also see (er, hear) Beyoncé's daughterBlue Ivy Carter! Here's everything we know about the new Disney movie.

What will Mufasa: The Lion King be about?

Image via Walt Disney Pictures

I don't know a single '90s kid who doesn't LOVE the character of Mufasa, and Mufasa: The Lion King is all about the future king's coming-of-age story. Rafiki tells Kiara (Simba and Nala's daughter) the story of how Mufasa began his journey as an orphaned cub — and how everything changes when he meets Taka, the heir to the royal bloodline.

When is Mufasa: The Lion King coming out?

Image via Walt Disney Pictures

Mufasa: The Lion King will hit theaters December 20, 2024. I don't know about you, but the holidays are ALWAYS a good time for a Disney movie. I will be seated.

Is Beyoncé in Mufasa: The Lion King?

Image via Kevin Winter/Getty Images for The Recording Academy

Yes, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter returns to Mufasa: The Lion King as Nala, as well as Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Donald Glover as Simba, and we'll also see Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara!! I'm super excited that Blue Ivy is in this new Disney movie because it makes it even more of a family affair. Any movie that includes an IRL parent and child in the cast automatically pulls at my heartstrings!

Mufasa also stars Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Taka’s mother Eshe, Lennie James as Taka’s father Obasi, Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa’s mother Afia, and Keith David as Mufasa’s father Masego.

Why does Scar hate Mufasa so much?

Image via Walt Disney Pictures

Scar is Mufasa's little brother, and throughout their lives, Scar's secretly desired to overthrow Mufasa and take the throne for himself. His hatred for Mufasa and his family is intensified when Simba is born, making Simba next in line for the throne instead of Scar himself.

The story takes heavy inspiration from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, as well as some inspo from the stories of Moses and Joseph in the Bible.

How many Oscars did Lion King win?

Image via Walt Disney Pictures

The original Lion King won two Oscars in 1995 for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, and its music also ~scored~ some Golden Globes, Grammys, and American Music Awards.

Mufasa: The Lion King is just one of the new Disney movies coming our way. Let us know which one you're most excited for in the comments and check out our TikTok for more pop culture news!

Going for a big chop can be intimidating, especially when opting for more layered haircuts after years of consistently long locks. Luckily, we rounded up the trending layered haircuts that will have you running to the salon to book your next appointment! Our favorite experts gave us the inside scoop on what haircuts are trending this season. And an added bonus? They work for all different hair textures! So don't worry if you have straight or curly hair — we've got you covered with the perfect layered haircuts, plus all the expert advice you need to get it.

Face Framing Pieces

Photo via Roman Bond/Instagram

If you're wanting to stay more risk-averse and opt for a simple, flattering cut then we have the one for you! Face framing layers are an amazing way to really help shape your face and flatter your features. Hair stylist and expert Roman Bond says, "Incorporating small layers around the face can delicately shape and enhance one's features, exuding an aura of softness and sophistication." That sounds like a dream to us!

Classic All-Around Layers

Image via Instagram/@renee.valerie

If you want to stay a little more tame with your hairstyle but still want to incorporate something new, then we suggest going with a classic-layered cut. This will keep your hair looking natural but still give it new dimension and depth.

I love classic layers, especially when they go all around with face-framing pieces that are flattering to all face shapes as well. Renee Valeriesays, "Introducing layers to longer hair is an effortless and subtle method to boost volume, create movement, and infuse a touch of softness to the style."

Short, Textured Cut

Photo via Roman Bond/Instagram

This is a look that will allow you to try out a shorter style without being too risky! This flattering cut works on so many hair types because it allows straight hair to gain some volume and textured hair to sit at a nice length with some dimension.

Roman Bondsays, "Individuals with thick, porous hair who prioritize manageability and styling versatility may benefit from shorter, textured layers. These layers are adept at distributing volume and facilitating styling efforts, particularly for those who can’t imagine their lives without blow-dryer or Airwraps."

This cut is perfect if you want to test out a shorter, more layered length without going too far! I love the mid-length for summer as well.

Longer Layered Haircuts

Image via Roman Bond/Instagram

Long layers is another insanely perfect hairstyle we love to see! We adore this style because, again, this one is perfect for all hair textures. You can style it like above with textured, long hair and maybe even adding some mild highlights to it for summer. Or you can style it with a blowout for a vintage-inspired supermodel look.

Hair expert Roman Bond adds, "Layered haircuts are also exceptionally suited for curly hair. Understanding the unique structure and styling needs of curls is paramount. When cutting curly hair, I opt to work with it in its natural, dry state, foregoing straightening methods. This approach allows for a more accurate assessment of the hairs natural tendencies, enabling me to strategically enhance volume, texture, and shape according to the client's preferences and lifestyle." This haircut is sure to be a summer go-to for so many!

Bardot Bangs

Photo via Vladimir Flores/Pexels

Who could forget iconic Bardot bangs? Named after the famous actress who made messy, slept-in bangs iconic, this haircut is everything — especially with this modern, updated cut. It's slightly over-grown side-swept bangs that really help to frame your face and accentuate your features. It's another great look to give you some dimension without trying anything too risky.

Hair expert Renee Valeriesays, "Bardot bangs infuse a cool vibe into any hairstyle. I love how they complement all hair textures seamlessly and quickly enhance a hairstyle's overall look with minimal time to create." Running to make an appointment for this cut ASAP!

Challengers is honestly just one giant tennis match. While we watch Zendaya's Tashi, Mike Faist's Art, and Josh O'Connor's Patrick play the game in a literal sense, we also see their personal relationship spiral, ricocheting back and forth as each character plays a different role every couple of years. And the crazy Challengers ending is a culmination of this intense emotional journey because it solidifies Patrick, Tashi, and Art's relationship — both to one another, but also to tennis itself.

What did the ending of The Challengers mean?

Image via Niko Tavernise/Amazon MGM Studios

There is a lot of tension between Tashi, Art, and Patrick throughout the movie, and it all builds to the titular Challenger match. It's Art vs. Patrick, and they're playing for way more than just the title and the money (though of course, they're definitely playing for the title and the money) — this is one final chance to prove themselves to Tashi, who's sitting court-side looking very unimpressed.

Both men lose their cool during different sets, but it's in the third and final set that everything comes to a head. At the end of the match, Patrick confesses to sleeping with Tashi using a tennis ball and racket signal only Art recognizes. For a split second Art is is complete shock, and I expected him to completely lose it. And, technically, he does, but in a totally unexpected way. Rather than jump the net and punch Patrick in the face, Art channels his emotions into his tennis, and the fury he feels actually allows him break through whatever slump he's been stuck in.

Unable to have a conversation about Patrick's secret, Art and Patrick talk with their serves and returns. And because Tashi doesn't catch the signal, for the first time in the whole movie, she's cut out of the conversation.

Did Tashi love Art and Patrick?

Image via Niko Tavernise/Amazon MGM Studios

Tashi's been pulling the strings ever since she met Art and Patrick, and she's never not been in control. After Patrick sends the signal, she knows something is going on between them, she just doesn't know what — and it unnerves her. Thanks to Zendaya's expert subtlety, the twitch of her eyebrow or the particularly anxious way she grips her hands are the only things that give her away. But her confusion, and the men's anger, quickly turn to pure joy in the final moments of the movie.

Patrick and Art end up playing so intensely that they meet at the net and embrace, prompting Tashi's iconic tennis yell before she gives one of her first genuine laughs of the film and the screen cuts to black. The first time I saw the movie, I thought "What?!" but the more I think about it, the clearer the Challengers ending is.

Patrick and Art (whose relationship begins six or seven years before the movie opens) haven't spoken since the big fight surrounding Tashi's injury, and their hug proves they're just happy to be playing together again. It's what they've always loved, and their fight over Tashi almost ended it forever. Tashi's pure elation shows she's happy to watch some good tennis, especially after she failed to help Art break out of his rut.

We've only seen Tashi scream like that once before, when she admits to a perfect tennis match. While Tashi does care for Patrick and Art, the end of Challengers proves the characters' true love was never really each other — it was always the game.
