How to Create the Custom Engagement Ring of Your Dreams

You’re head over heels in love with your boo, your relationship is as solid as ever, and you’re *pretty* sure a proposal is on the horizon. Now, you start thinking about the ring. And not just any ring. We’re talking THE ring — that sparkling piece of finger candy you’ll wear every day, possibly forever. Whether you choose a traditional diamond or an alternative gemstone, the keyword here is to “choose.” Because, if you’re anything like us, you want a role in this very important fashion decision. “Shopping for an engagement ring has become more of a collaborative process,” says Olivia Landau, founder of The Clear Cut, a company that specializes in engagement ring customization. “This is one of the first big investments and decisions a couple will make in their life and they’re opting to design the ring together.”

How to rework an heirloom

Whether you’re planning to repurpose previously loved stones or you’re starting anew, there are plenty of reasons to take the custom route. Jewelry buying is a costly endeavor no matter how you cushion cut it. It’s important to stay financially smart when selecting your ring while also considering your own personal style. “Custom made jewelry is becoming the next mass trend,” says Seohee Koh, founder of S/H KOH Fine Jewelry and Studio Remod. “It’s driving amazingly original and groundbreaking trends in jewelry as an art form.”

Customization isn’t as much about budget as it is about creating your own design. There are many factors that affect the price when it comes to ring buying — like stone quality and size and metal type — and custom rings require an added labor cost that most mass-produced styles don’t include. But, “in general it’ll be a better price if you do a custom made engagement ring at a smaller local shop than buying a well-known brand engagement ring,” says Koh.

If you’re lucky enough to have a perfectly good diamond ring to begin with, re-setting it or changing the design can give it a unique look, making it feel more like a personal piece. “I’ve been asked to repurpose modern yet classic styles, like a Tiffany classic six-prong ring,” says Koh. “Even if it’s made into a very similar design, the customers notice the subtle difference between a one-of-a-kind, custom made ring and a generic, mass-made ring.”

Studio Remod offers a Bring Your Own Jewelry process where Koh works closely with customers to give antique pieces a refresh. Following an initial consultation and a minimum $50 design fee, the customer sends in jewelry and makes some important design decisions. Will it be modern or classic? Art Deco or vintage-inspired? Should it be set in platinum or yellow, white, or rose gold? And then of course, what kind of stone are you working with? A diamond? A pearl? How big and what cut? It’s all about these intricate details and Koh takes careful notes, sketching up individual designs for the customer to pick from. And it doesn’t have to be a ring; Koh also uses stones from heirloom necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

In general, the custom ring makeover costs between $950 to a few thousand dollars *if* you bring your own center stone. If you’re sourcing a stone, the cost increases significantly based on the type of stone, size, and quality. According to Koh the trend right now is unconventional stones cut in unique shapes. “Colored stones like sapphires are very popular since there are many different varieties of colors,” says Koh. Raw diamonds are sought after too, especially in unusual cuts like shield, trillion, kite, and hex.

How to design from scratch

No heirloom? No problem. The Clear Cut specializes in helping you create your dream ring from scratch, beginning with an ethically sourced diamond. “We always start with a phone call to get a better sense of the customer’s preferences, timeline, and budget,” says Landau. “We then curate a selection of diamonds that ticks off all the boxes for the customer’s preferences and provides the best value for their budget.”

The average price for one of their engagement rings is $10,000, and Landau is so involved in the process that you reach her personal cell when you call the website’s phone number. The Clear Cut doesn’t have an on-site inventory (aside from their newly launched capsule collection of minimalist diamond jewelry) and each piece is made at their NYC studio.

According to Landau, the biggest engagement trends right now are skinny solitaire rings, colored metal, three stone rings, thin pave bands, and hidden halos. As far as diamonds are concerned, customers have been loving antique, square cushion, and Ascher cuts.

TBH, it doesn’t matter who you’re RSVPing "no" to — it’s awkward. It can be difficult to say no to an invite when your reason boils down to “I just don’t want to,” but not wanting to do something optional (and/or low-stakes) is reason enough to not do it. Your time, energy, and money is valuable — you don’t have to dish it out at every opportunity. Obviously, some events (like those hosted by close family or friends) are important to go to, no matter how much you may not want to.

However, for those invites from not-so-close friends for relatively unremarkable events, it's perfectly fine to decline. Even weddings, arguably the most lavish event someone may throw in their lifetime, are declinable. Whether it’s too expensive, too far away, or you just need a weekend off, there are plenty of respectful ways to RSVP “no.”

Here are all the tips you need to diplomatically decline, and not feel bad about it.

1. RSVP "no" early

As soon as you receive an invitation, you probably have an idea of whether or not you can or want to attend. Decline ASAP so the host has an opportunity to invite someone else, get a refund on your seat, and plan accordingly. Plus, you don’t want to carry the burden of accepting and dreading the event for weeks. It’s way more emotionally draining, and confusing for the host.

If you do want to attend, but are unsure if you can, check your calendar and let the host know your circumstances. Perhaps your sister is expecting her first baby around the same time as your college roommate’s wedding. Reach out to your friend directly and let them know that you may be able to come, or would like to come, but it’s dependent on another important factor.

Chances are, the host will respect and appreciate your honesty. And remember: for big events like weddings, guests = money, so giving the hosts as much time as possible to make adjustments before their event is imperative.

2. You don't have to explain yourself

Photo by Getty/JLco - Julia Amaral

This is a bit contradictory to what we just said, but if it’s not an up-in-the-air type of situation, you can just say “no.” Plain and simple. Hosts don’t need a laundry list of reasons you can’t go, and you don’t need to share yours.

3. Declining is *actually* quite respectful

Responding to someone, whether it’s an enthusiastic “yes” or a “no,” is way better than not responding at all – or worse, canceling at the last minute. It shows that you care enough about the person to give them an answer, and that your friendship allows for open communication. With anyone in your life, you should be allowed to ask for what you want, and what you need. If you can’t do this for yourself, do it for Future You.

4. Don't make up excuses

Photo by Eugene Chystiakov on Unsplash

It’s just a no-no. If you fabricate an excuse, it can lead to way worse (and certainly more awkward) situations. For example, if you say you can’t go deep sea fishing this Saturday (when it’s really about not wanting to fish), the person might ask you to go with them another time, evidently putting you on the hook (pun VERY intended) for future excursions.

Alternatively, if you opt for blowing them off and they find out, they’ll probably feel worse and assume your response was personal to them. Whether or not that’s true is besides the point.

Being a bit more honest always goes a long way. Oh, and BTW, refusing an invitation isn’t that deep! Truly. It’s literally fine.

5. How to say "no"

Saying no is all about what you say and how you say it. Aim for a warm, neutral and matter-of-fact tone paired with a short, candid response. Don’t beg for forgiveness (and TBH if you have to do this, they’re probably not a great friend in the first place), give them a vague reason as to why you can’t go, or get defensive if they have questions. Repeat after us: saying no is normal!

BTW – by declining an invite you have to allow others to do the same. So if someone declines an invitation to your birthday party (which we know will be totally amazing), it’s OK.

And just remember – any response is better than no response.

Challengers is honestly just one giant tennis match. While we watch Zendaya's Tashi, Mike Faist's Art, and Josh O'Connor's Patrick play the game in a literal sense, we also see their personal relationship spiral, ricocheting back and forth as each character plays a different role every couple of years. And the crazy Challengers ending is a culmination of this intense emotional journey because it solidifies Patrick, Tashi, and Art's relationship — both to one another, but also to tennis itself.

What did the ending of The Challengers mean?

Image via Niko Tavernise/Amazon MGM Studios

There is a lot of tension between Tashi, Art, and Patrick throughout the movie, and it all builds to the titular Challenger match. It's Art vs. Patrick, and they're playing for way more than just the title and the money (though of course, they're definitely playing for the title and the money) — this is one final chance to prove themselves to Tashi, who's sitting court-side looking very unimpressed.

Both men lose their cool during different sets, but it's in the third and final set that everything comes to a head. At the end of the match, Patrick confesses to sleeping with Tashi using a tennis ball and racket signal only Art recognizes. For a split second Art is is complete shock, and I expected him to completely lose it. And, technically, he does, but in a totally unexpected way. Rather than jump the net and punch Patrick in the face, Art channels his emotions into his tennis, and the fury he feels actually allows him break through whatever slump he's been stuck in.

Unable to have a conversation about Patrick's secret, Art and Patrick talk with their serves and returns. And because Tashi doesn't catch the signal, for the first time in the whole movie, she's cut out of the conversation.

Did Tashi love Art and Patrick?

Image via Niko Tavernise/Amazon MGM Studios

Tashi's been pulling the strings ever since she met Art and Patrick, and she's never not been in control. After Patrick sends the signal, she knows something is going on between them, she just doesn't know what — and it unnerves her. Thanks to Zendaya's expert subtlety, the twitch of her eyebrow or the particularly anxious way she grips her hands are the only things that give her away. But her confusion, and the men's anger, quickly turn to pure joy in the final moments of the movie.

Patrick and Art end up playing so intensely that they meet at the net and embrace, prompting Tashi's iconic tennis yell before she gives one of her first genuine laughs of the film and the screen cuts to black. The first time I saw the movie, I thought "What?!" but the more I think about it, the clearer the Challengers ending is.

Patrick and Art (whose relationship begins six or seven years before the movie opens) haven't spoken since the big fight surrounding Tashi's injury, and their hug proves they're just happy to be playing together again. It's what they've always loved, and their fight over Tashi almost ended it forever. Tashi's pure elation shows she's happy to watch some good tennis, especially after she failed to help Art break out of his rut.

We've only seen Tashi scream like that once before, when she admits to a perfect tennis match. While Tashi does care for Patrick and Art, the end of Challengers proves the characters' true love was never really each other — it was always the game.

How sweet would it be to have matching name signet rings with your bestie?! We say it's a must.

Jenny Bird Daphne Imitation Pearl Ring

Who doesn't love a vintage touch with pearls? This ring is so reminiscent of vintage styles and it would be perfect stacked with a simple gold band. It has a timeless, classic look that could also be paired with simple, dainty rings or just on its own like in the above picture! Jenny Bird uses a high polish, 18k gold to plate all of their items, so not only is it stylish but it'll last you a long time.

Monica Vinader Siren Ring

If you're wanting to invest in a good quality, classic band, we'd highly recommend this hammered, 18k gold-plated ring from Monica Vinader. We'd prefer to style it with some of our aforementioned statement rings for a fun and accessorized look, but you can also wear it by itself for a dainty and petite look. With its great quality, it'll definitely stand the test of time while making for a classic stacking piece you won't ever want to take off.

Mejuri Boa Gemstone Coil Gold Ring

Looking for something with a little flair? We're seriously obsessed with this coil ring with the pop of red in it! You can get it with a beautiful garnet or simple white topaz! Both are sure to make a statement. This one is at a higher price-point, but with the quality we've seen from Mejuri, it will be sure to last a long time. But as an added security measure, just remember that you also have a 2-year warranty with this one as well. It's a great policy we'd definitely recommend taking advantage of when you need it!

Scarlett said her personal struggles with skincare inspired her to create The Outset:

“I’ve just had this long road of struggling with acne and irritation and sensitivity forever, ‘till I was in my mid-20s. It was my own frustration that led me down the path of what has now become The Outset.”

Few books have made an impact on BookTok like Colleen Hoover's It Ends With Us. The story follows a woman named Lily who is intrigued by a new relationship with Ryle, but an encounter with her first love Atlas — and the reminders of her past that Atlas carries — complicates everything. This movie based on a bookwill be one to remember.

We had high hopes for this summer movie, and when it was announced that Justin Baldoni would develop the film in 2019, we knew the story was in good hands. Baldoni won us over with his role as Rafael in Jane The Virgin, and his feature directorial debut Five Feet Apart made us cry our eyes out. If you're a Colleen Hoover fan, keep reading for everything you need to know about It Ends With Us. Check out the rest of this year's 2024 movies too!

When is the It Ends With Us movie coming out?

Image via Sony Pictures Releasing

It Ends With Us will hit theaters August 9, 2024. With so much color, plus the fact Blake Lively's Lily runs a flower shop, a summer release is perfect! Because of the writers' strike and actors' strike, production on the film paused over the summer of 2023, meaning the movie got delayed from its original February 9 (then June 21) release date.

Who plays Lily in the It Ends With Us cast?

Image via Sony Pictures Releasing

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni (who's also directing) are set to star in the film as Lily and Ryle, respectively. On April 20, 2023, it was announced that 1923 star Brandon Sklenar would join the duo as Atlas, and on May 1, Jenny Slate joined the cast as Ryle's sister Allysa. Hasan Minhaj joined the film on May 25 as Alyssa's husband Marshall.

Baldoni also posted a TikTok confirming that after an open casting call, they've found young Lily! Thanks to IMDb and some on-set TikToks, it looks like we'll be seeing Isabela Ferrer starring as the younger version of Blake Lively's character.

Fans were initially unhappy with Blake's casting, because in the book, Lily is supposed to be in her early 20s. But author Colleen Hoover explained a bit of the intention behind the casting with the TODAY Show, explaining that the "new adult" genre at the time favored characters in their early 20s — and that the point of the book is its message, not its cast or costumes.

“As an author, we make mistakes,” she says. “There’s no 28-year-old neurosurgeons, you know? You go to school for 15 years. And so to make corrections to what I messed up in the book, we aged the characters up somewhat...I love that there’s discourse surrounding it, I do. I think that people are going to be very pleased. I’m very pleased.”

What is It Ends With Us about?

It Ends With Us follows Lily Bloom after she moves out of her small town to start a flower shop in Boston. When she meets Ryle on a rooftop and quickly falls head over heels, it seems like fate. That is, until she comes face-to-face with her first love Atlas. It's a story of strength, deep-rooted relationships, and identity that made waves on social media.

Where was It Ends With Us filmed?

Image via Sony Pictures Releasing

It Ends With Us has been filming in New Jersey. The first set images from It Ends With Us are from a scene that takes place between Lily and Ryle. While Baldoni is wearing a simple black sweater, Lively is wearing two different shades of pink over a brown dress. I love the way costumes highlight all the ways characters are different, and this is the perfect example!

On January 6, 2024, Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni were finally spotted in Jersey City again. While the costumes have gotten some backlash, I really love the texture and visual interest in this patchwork jacket + jeans combo! It feels creative and bright — just like Lily :).

And on April 30 we FINALLY got the first official images from the movie and everything looks incredible! The colors are just as bright and yet still have some emotional weight behind them to match the story. I'm particularly obsessed with this Blake Lively outfit — I'm a sucker for a jeans + tank + cardigan combo.

What scenes have the cast filmed?

Image via Sony Pictures Releasing

On January 15, 2024, a video of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni filming another It Ends With Us movie scene went viral on TikTok, and users are convinced they know which scene we're seeing in the video. Blake and Justin are walking around outside of a restaurant, which leads fans to believe this is Lily and Ryle's confrontation after they see Atlas in his restaurant for the first time.

Is Colleen Hoover making a movie out of It Ends With Us?

Image via Sony Pictures Releasing

Yes, we're getting a movie adaptation of It Ends With Us! Filming began in New Jersey the first week of May 2022 and is expected to wrap in early 2024. But after a recent leak from the movie set, one question that's top of mind is whether we're actually getting two movies. The scene, which features Blake Lively's Lily pushing a baby in a swing, doesn't take place in the original novel and fans are wondering whether the film will also use elements from It Starts With Us, the 2023 sequel Colleen Hover published.

"It Ends With Us doesn't have this scene," one TikToker wrote in the comments. "This is definitely It Starts With Us," another added. Now that there are two books, it's totally plausible that they've added elements to the end of the film that set up a sequel movie — and we are totally here for it!

Who else is working on the film?

Image via Sony Pictures Releasing

According to Deadline, Lively, Baldoni, Hoover, Steve Sarowitz, and Andrew Calof are all serving as executive producers, while Alex Saks, Christy Hall, and Jamey Heath are producing. Hall is also penning the script for the film.

Follow us on TikTok and Twitter for the latest entertainment updates, and check back here for new info on It Ends With Us! Feel free to rewatch all of Blake Lively's movies too ;).
