Benedict Cumberbatch Reportedly Saved a Man from Being Mugged
Benedict Cumberbatch to the rescue! According to reports over the weekend, the actor saved a stranger from being mugged a few months ago, bringing his on-screen crime-fighting and superhero ways into real life.
As first reported by the British newspaper The Sun, Cumberbatch was in a London Uber when he spotted a cyclist from the food delivery company Deliveroo being attacked by a group of muggers. The Doctor Strange star reportedly leapt into action, jumping out of the car and running to the cyclist’s rescue.
“Benedict was courageous, brave, and selfless,” Uber driver Manuel Dias, who admitted he didn’t realize he had a famous passenger at first, told The Sun.
The driver said he followed Cumberbatch’s lead, helping to pull the men away from the alleged victim. “He stood there instructing them in the street, shouting, ‘Leave him alone,'” Dias said. “It was only then I recognized Benedict. Then it all got a bit surreal. Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just round the corner from [Holmes’ fictional home] Baker Street.”
While the London Metropolitan Police did confirm that they were called to an attempted mugging of the cyclist, no other names or details were given. On Sunday, however, Deliveroo took to Twitter to thank the actor for his heroic actions.
“Thank you Benedict Cumberbatch for your brave actions,” the company’s account wrote. “Deliveroo riders are heroes — their safety is our priority and any violence against them is totally unacceptable. So on behalf of everyone at Deliveroo: thank you.”
