THIS Is Going to Be Summer’s It-Braid

Braids are never going to go out of style. Not only are they crazy easy, but they’re also a lifesaver in the summer when it’s too hot to wear your hair down. But of course, sporting a basic braid can get a little boring. We went to our friends at DreamDry to ask them to predict what this summer’s hottest braid trend will be, and they not only hooked us up with the trend, but they also shared a step-by-step how-to with us. Yep, we’re talking about the goddess braid. If you made it to Coachella this year (or even if you just stalked everyone’s photos on Instagram), you already know the goddess braid was the hair style to have at the music festival. Scroll on to find out how you can get this look in just a few minutes.

To start, DreamDry senior stylist Faith Huffnagle tells us, “Take two large sections from each side of the head and join in the back with pins to create a beautiful ‘crown’ look on any length of hair,” instructs DreamDry senior stylist Faith Huffnagle. After braiding, “leave the bottom half of the hair out and natural, creating a carefree look that’s super boho-chic.” (Photo via Divine Caroline)

You could stop there, but if you want to add a twist to this trendy style, Huffnagle suggests adding some cute hair accessories. “Add feathers, extensions, accessories or anything your heart desires,” she says. “Making a hair statement is one of the biggest trends we’re seeing right now — whether it’s accessories, color or textures. Complete the look with something natural like flowers or feathers, and add ribbon or colored bobby pins.” Braids add a wonderful accent to any hair texture, length or style — all while keeping hair out of your face while you rock out.

The result is a style that’s both pretty and carefree — perfect to rock all summer long. But that doesn’t mean it’s a weekend-only look. Mary-Kate Olsen proves that you can rock the goddess braid on the red carpet too. (Photo via Charley Gallay/Getty)

So don't worry if you have straight or curly hair — we've got you covered with the perfect layered haircuts, plus all the expert advice you need to get it.

Face Framing Pieces

Photo via Roman Bond/Instagram

If you're wanting to stay more risk-averse and opt for a simple, flattering cut then we have the one for you! Face framing layers are an amazing way to really help shape your face and flatter your features. Hair stylist and expert Roman Bond says, "Incorporating small layers around the face can delicately shape and enhance one's features, exuding an aura of softness and sophistication." That sounds like a dream to us!

Classic All-Around Layers

Image via Instagram/@renee.valerie

If you want to stay a little more tame with your hairstyle but still want to incorporate something new, then we suggest going with a classic-layered cut. This will keep your hair looking natural but still give it new dimension and depth.

I love classic layers, especially when they go all around with face-framing pieces that are flattering to all face shapes as well. Renee Valeriesays, "Introducing layers to longer hair is an effortless and subtle method to boost volume, create movement, and infuse a touch of softness to the style."

Short, Textured Cut

Photo via Roman Bond/Instagram

This is a look that will allow you to try out a shorter style without being too risky! This flattering cut works on so many hair types because it allows straight hair to gain some volume and textured hair to sit at a nice length with some dimension.

Roman Bondsays, "Individuals with thick, porous hair who prioritize manageability and styling versatility may benefit from shorter, textured layers. These layers are adept at distributing volume and facilitating styling efforts, particularly for those who can’t imagine their lives without blow-dryer or Airwraps."

This cut is perfect if you want to test out a shorter, more layered length without going too far! I love the mid-length for summer as well.

Longer Layered Haircuts

Image via Roman Bond/Instagram

Long layers is another insanely perfect hairstyle we love to see! We adore this style because, again, this one is perfect for all hair textures. You can style it like above with textured, long hair and maybe even adding some mild highlights to it for summer. Or you can style it with a blowout for a vintage-inspired supermodel look.

Hair expert Roman Bond adds, "Layered haircuts are also exceptionally suited for curly hair. Understanding the unique structure and styling needs of curls is paramount. When cutting curly hair, I opt to work with it in its natural, dry state, foregoing straightening methods. This approach allows for a more accurate assessment of the hairs natural tendencies, enabling me to strategically enhance volume, texture, and shape according to the client's preferences and lifestyle." This haircut is sure to be a summer go-to for so many!

Bardot Bangs

Photo via Vladimir Flores/Pexels

Who could forget iconic Bardot bangs? Named after the famous actress who made messy, slept-in bangs iconic, this haircut is everything — especially with this modern, updated cut. It's slightly over-grown side-swept bangs that really help to frame your face and accentuate your features. It's another great look to give you some dimension without trying anything too risky.

Hair expert Renee Valeriesays, "Bardot bangs infuse a cool vibe into any hairstyle. I love how they complement all hair textures seamlessly and quickly enhance a hairstyle's overall look with minimal time to create." Running to make an appointment for this cut ASAP!

I never thought we'd get a Taylor Swift album with multiple songs referencing Matty Healy, but after multiple listens, the internet is convinced The Tortured Poets Department(the first edition, at least) has a ton of references to The 1975 frontman. (Only time will tell if TS12 references Matty too!) One song in particular has sent everyone into a tizzy: "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived." Here's why fans think the song is about Taylor Swift & Matty Healy.

What has Matty Healy said about "The Tortured Poets Department"?

Image via Mauricio Santana/Getty Images

When asked what he'd rate his "diss track" from The Tortured Poets Department, Matty admits he hasn't actually listened to that much of the album yet (if he ever will). "My diss track? Oh!" he laughs. "I haven't really listened to that much of it, but I'm sure it's good."

Debbie Dedes, Matty's aunt, speculated right after the album drop that he wouldn't be affected too much by the music. “She writes about all her relationships, doesn't she? I don't think it will come as a shock to him at all,” she tells The Daily Mail. “He's very happy in his new relationship [with Gabbriette Bechtel] so I'm sure he will be focusing on that.”

Is "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" about Taylor Swift & Matty Healy?

Image via Francois Durand/Getty Images For Christian Dior

While Taylor Swift & Matty Healy never publicly dated until 2023, they were friends for years before that. In 2014, Taylor Swift went to her first The 1975 concert with Selena Gomez and Ellie Goulding. Then, Taylor was seen wearing one of their band shirts while Matty was spotted in a 1989 shirt. "I met Taylor Swift," Matty told Shazam Top 20 in November (via E! News). "That was really nice. We exchanged numbers. Let's see what happens."

Matty Healy & Taylor Swift continued referencing each other over the next couple years, and fans lost their minds when Matty revealed he'd collaborated on a Midnights song — even if he went on to say it was cut. After Taylor Swift performed "Anti-Hero" during a 1975 concert, and then split from boyfriend Joe Alwyn split in the spring of 2023, Taylor & Matty quickly connected. They went on to date from May to June. That brings us to "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived."

In the song, Taylor wonders if "rusting my sparkling summer was the goal" and talks about "your Jehovah's Witness suit" (Matty is famous for wearing suits during his concerts). She also mentions how the relationship "wasn't sexy once it wasn't forbidden" — which totally ties into the themes within "Guilty As Sin?" (about imaginary trysts she thought about while dating someone else).

"[These Matty Healy-focused songs] started out being like 'f*ck all of you, I love him, I’ll fix him, I don’t care what you say' to ending here basically saying 'alright yeah this guy sucks,'" one Reddit user says. "I think the order of these songs plays a huge role in this throughline of that relationship."

"Heavyweight rappers J. Cole, Drake, and Rick Ross all released diss tracks over the last couple of weeks, and none of them were as scathing as this one," another says.

How long did Taylor Swift and Matty Healy date?

While Taylor Swift & Matty Healy officially dated during the summer of 2023, another song on TTPD, "Fresh Out The Slammer" makes me think they connected before then. Referring to her relationship as a jail, she sings about how she's connected with this person before she started dating her ex. "I'm runnin' back home to you // Frеsh out the slammer // I know who my first call will be to." (Does this mean "Illicit Affairs" from Folklore is actually about Matty Healy too?)

What other The Tortured Poets Department songs are about Matty Healy?

It looks like "Fortnight," "The Tortured Poets Department," "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)," and "loml" are just a few of the songs that could be about Taylor Swift & Matty Healy's relationship.

The "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" Lyrics

Image via Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for The Recording Academy

Verse 1: Was any of it true? // Gazing at me starry-eyed // In your Jehovah's Witness suit // Who the f-ck was that guy? // You tried to buy some pills // From a friend of friends of mine // They just ghosted you // Now you know what it feels like

Chorus: And I don't even want you back, I just want to know // If rusting my sparkling summer was the goal // And I don't miss what we had, but could someone give // A message to the smallest man who ever lived?

Verse 2: You hung me on your wall // Stabbed me with your push pins // In public, showed me off // Then sank in stoned oblivion // 'Cause once your queen had come // You'd treat her likе an also-ran // You didn't measure up // In any measurе of a man

Chorus: And I don't even want you back, I just want to know // If rusting my sparkling summer was the goal // And I don't miss what we had, but could someone give // A message to the smallest man who ever lived?

Image via Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Bridge: Were you sent by someone who wanted me dead? // Did you sleep with a gun underneath our bed? // Were you writin' a book? Were you a sleeper cell spy? // In fifty years, will all this be declassified? // And you'll confess why you did it and I'll say, "Good riddance" // 'Cause it wasn't sexy once it wasn't forbidden // I would've died for your sins, instead, I just died inside // And you deserve prison, but you won't get time // You'll slide into inboxes and slip through the bars // You crashed my party and your rental car // You said normal girls were boring // But you were gone by the morning // You kicked out the stage lights, but you're still performing

Outro: And in plain sight you hid // But you are what you did // And I'll forget you, but I'll never forgive // The smallest man who ever lived

As we age, our hair changes. For women over 50, standing salon appointments to disguise gray strands are all too familiar, which in turn can make hair feel dry and brittle. With older age, hair growth feels somewhat non-existent compared to how fast you used to notice extra length in your locks, and hair thinning is simply inevitable. These changes can have a hand in an identity crisis of sorts – hair has a heavy hand in our outward appearance, so when the hairstyle you’ve stayed true to for the last 25 years doesn’t work for you anymore, it can feel like a defeat.

Alternatively, new hair textures and lengths can be reframed as a positive opportunity to make new and exciting changes in your appearance. If you’re unsure of which hairstyle is right for you, don’t fret – that’s where the experts come in! To deliver the best hairstyles for women over 50, we spoke with celebrity hairstylists Clyde Haygood and Gina Rivera to uncover which unique hairstyles are the best for women in this age range. Below you can find the best hair care tips and tricks, along with specific hairstyles to ask your stylist about during your next salon visit, from these expert stylists who have experience working with names including Kris Jenner, Erika Jayne, and more.

How to Care for Aging Hair

Photo by Ron Lach / PEXELS

“Aging hair tends to be thinner so using products that will help aid in hair growth is key to getting the best results when it comes to taking care of your hair,” mentioned Haygood. The expert stylist shared that at the base of any hair care routine for women over 50, it’s best to start with a scalp serum. Clyde's recommended formula from PURA D’OR promises to deliver stronger, thicker, healthier hair starting straight from the scalp, and he suggests this formula to any client with weak or thin hair that tends to break easily thanks to the regenerative formula inclusive of biotin, caffeine, argan oil, and other growth-promoting ingredients.

Clyde also made a point to warn us about what could happen if someone is using too many products to mask their gray locks. “Hair that is colored or highlighted tends to dry out so be careful not to overuse products with a lot of alcohol as that can also dehydrate the hair,” says Haygood. To combat over-drying your hair, “a hair mask once a week is essential to keep hair at its best.” Clyde’s favorite mask for maximum moisture is the PURA D’OR Hair Thinning Therapy Intense Moisturizing Masque. A unique formulation of 15 key ingredients including apple stem cells, amla oil, and more hydrates hair from the root to invigorate the scalp and lock in moisture to nourish hair to help to improve volume, thickness, shine, and split ends.

Long Layers That Frame the Face

“Adding face-framing layers can easily create more movement, volume, and a youthful, vibrant look (think Jennifer Anniston),” shared Gina Rivera. “The layering instantly allows for damaged ends to disappear and creates a ton of opportunity for styling and having fun with your hair!” Gina also recommends “using Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine as a finishing product to add more shine to hair.”

Asymmetrical Cuts

“This creates a perfectly classic look yet is still modern and trendy,” says Rivera. “Removing a bit of length from the hair will add major movement and create a youthful appeal overall.” To make the most out of this cut, Gina suggests “styling hair by creating texture [which] creates the opportunity to remove some of the weight of the damaged ends which brings hair to life.” Gina went on to advise creating a “maintenance schedule” with your stylist to ensure you’re getting your hair cut often enough to keep ends healthy and regain hair health (think: every 4-6 weeks).

Side-Swept Bangs

“Rather than a blunt fringe or baby bangs, I recommend side bangs,” offered Rivera. “These detract from the appearance of fine or limp hair and can add dimension to a style. In addition, side bangs can also be styled in a variety of ways which can lead to hair appearing fuller.” Gina recognized that “this is a great cut for those with thin fine hair (which can happen after 50) and this can be styled in so many ways which brings versatility to a cut. Side bangs are huge right now and a great way to add more of a 'look' to a short style.”

Bobs Of Different Lengths & Textures

Clyde Haygood shared that bobs “are a great way to maintain a style for a younger appearance.” To achieve the full effect, he mentioned that it’s important to “try to keep hair crisp, blunt, and bouncy for the most youthful effect.”

Pin It Up

Although it can be tempting to hold onto hair length forever, Haygood encouraged women to” be wary of hair that is too long when you’re over 50 – it can age you, especially if [your] hair is dry, gray and wiry.” However, if a dramatic chop simply isn’t an avenue that you want to explore, “think of pinning hair in an updo which can look fun and youthful,” offered Haygood.

The Wolf Haircut

This bold cut is “a mid-length shag that gives rocker vibes but it can also be styled with soft curls or waves to make it feel more romantic, especially if you’re over 50,” says Haygood. If you’re looking for a ‘do with a little extra oomph, “this style is great for giving volume and texture to finer hair that can look limp and lifeless without layers and it’s especially great for those with curly hair because it will make your curls loose and airy while framing the face and accentuating your features.” Even better, Clyde shared that this specific haircut is extremely low-maintenance for those who don’t have extra time for styling every day – with the wolf haircut you can just wash and go.

The Boy Cut

Most famously known thanks to Clyde Haygood’s celebrity client, “momager” Kris Jenner, a boy cut is a great, carefree style “that is a perfect example of a youthful and age-appropriate hairstyle,” says the stylist.

  1. Start with colored cardstock or paper as the foundation of your cards. Choose a variety of vibrant hues to suit different themes and moods. Scissors are your trusty sidekick, enabling you to precisely cut out shapes, create borders, and trim your cardstock.
  2. Grab glue or adhesive tape to hold everything together securely. Opt for a glue stick for a mess-free experience or double-sided tape for a clean and seamless finish.
  3. Round up all the art supplies you have, from markers and colored pencils, or pens. These magical tools will be your gateway to adding personalized messages, whimsical doodles, and vibrant colors to your DIY creations.
  4. Stock up on a dazzling array of embellishments for an added dose of flair and personality. Watch your creations come alive with vibrant colors, textures, and eye-catching details. With these delightful elements at your fingertips, there's no limit to the magic your birthday cards can be infused with.

Step 2: Choose Your Card Design

Image via George Dolgikh/Pexels

The card design will function as the first impression that sets the tone for the entire experience. A well-designed card can evoke emotions ranging from joy and excitement to nostalgia and warmth, leaving friends and family in awe of the thoughtful gesture.

Handmade Watercolor Design:

Express your artistic side by creating a handmade watercolor masterpiece for a genuinely one-of-a-kind birthday card. Start with a blank cardstock or watercolor paper as the base, and let your creativity flow. Use watercolors to paint a vibrant and personalized design, such as flowers, balloons, or a recipient's favorite hobby or color palette. Add a heartfelt birthday message inside to complete the card.

Pop-Up Surprise:

Add an element of surprise and delight to your card with a pop-up feature. Cut out a simple pop-up mechanism using cardstock or colored paper and attach it to the inside of the card. Then, unleash your creativity by designing and cutting out fun shapes, such as cakes, candles, or balloons, and attach them to the pop-up mechanism. When the card is opened, the surprise element will make the birthday celebration of your loved one even more memorable.

Quilled Creations:

Quilling is a paper art technique that involves rolling and shaping thin paper strips to create intricate designs. Use quilling techniques to create beautiful and delicate patterns, flowers, or even personalized messages on your birthday cards. Experiment with different colors and shapes to bring your design to life and make it truly unique. The recipient will appreciate the time and effort put into crafting such an elegant and artistic card.

Hand-Stitched Greeting:

Consider incorporating those skills into your DIY card if you enjoy sewing or embroidery. Use a needle and thread to create hand-stitched designs or patterns on fabric or cardstock. You can stitch the recipient's name, a birthday message, or even cute motifs like balloons or cupcakes. The texture and charm of a hand-stitched card will make it a cherished keepsake.

Interactive Slider Card:

Create an interactive slider card to take your birthday card to the next level. Use cardstock to make a slider mechanism that reveals a hidden message or image as it is pulled. Write a heartfelt message or attach a memorable photo that slides out when the recipient pulls the tab. This interactive element adds a playful touch to your card and makes it truly engaging.

Step 3: Write A Clever Message

Image via June/Pexels

Elevate your birthday card by personalizing it with a heartfelt note to enrich the receiver's experience. Share warm wishes, inside jokes, or memories that make the card even more special and meaningful. Not sure where to start? Here are a few ideas for what to write inside your DIY birthday card!
  1. "Happy birthday, queen of the hashtags! May your day be as fabulous as your Instagram feed."
  2. "You're the avocado to my toast, the squad to my goals. Happy birthday, superstar!"
  3. "It's your birthday, so let's turn up the 'Lit' level and celebrate like it's 1999... or 2023!"
  4. "Birthdays are nature's way of telling us to eat more cake. Enjoy your special day!"
  5. "May your birthday be filled with good vibes and a bottomless brunch. Cheers to another fabulous year!"
  6. "Sending you birthday wishes with all the heart emojis. You deserve all the love and happiness today and always."
  7. "Happy birthday to my favorite extremely online friend. May your Wi-Fi always be strong and your battery never die."
  8. "Time to celebrate another trip around the sun. Let's make this year even more epic than the last!"
  9. "You're not getting older, you're leveling up! Happy birthday, gamer!"
  10. "Happy birthday, trendsetter! May your day be filled with selfie-worthy moments and viral-worthy adventures."

Step 4: Add The Perfect Finishing Touch

Brit + Co

As a bonus, consider creating a DIY envelope to complete the package. Choose decorative paper or repurpose materials like magazine pages or fabric scraps to craft a unique envelope that adds creativity and thoughtfulness to your handmade card. Personalize it by adding hand-drawn designs, stamps, or calligraphy for an extra special touch.

So, there you have it! DIY birthday cards offer endless possibilities for fun, creativity, and the chance to unleash your imagination. With just a few simple steps, you can create customized and sincere cards that will bring joy to your loved ones on their special day. Remember, the beauty of DIY is that there are no limits or rules. Let your creativity run wild, experiment with different techniques, colors, and textures, and, most importantly, have fun. Happy crafting!
