See Jennifer Aniston as a Southern Beauty Queen in the Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Dumplin’
Netflix has seen an infusion of serious star power in recent years, and now it can add Jennifer Aniston to its roster of A-list talent, too. The actress stars in the upcoming original feature film Dumplin’, the trailer for which dropped Wednesday, November 14.
Based on Julie Murphy’s 2015 YA novel of the same name, the movie features Aniston as Rosie Dickson, a former beauty queen who now runs the local Miss Teen Blue Bonnet pageant. When Willowdean, AKA Dumplin’, her outspoken, Dolly-Parton obsessed, plus-sized teenaged daughter, decides to enter the pageant out of protest to superficial beauty standards, Rosie finds her own outdated and narrow views — and, in many ways, her entire identity — challenged.
The catch is that Dumplin’, played by Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$), has no idea how to fit into the pageant world. Looking for guidance, she seeks help and acceptance from a group of local drag queens, led by none other than RuPaul’s Drag Race star Ginger Minj.
Dumplin’s efforts pay off, as several other girls who never considered themselves pageant material decide to try out for Miss Teen Blue Bonnet, too. “There’s nothing in the rules that says big girls need not apply,” one pageant hopeful says.
Dumplin’s Dolly Parton fandom features heavily throughout the film, as the soundtrack is chock full of songs from the country music legend. Other familiar faces to watch out for include Lady Bird‘s Odeya Rush and Dove Cameron, as well as relative newcomer Luke Benward, who could be Netflix’s next young rom-com breakout star (look out, Noah Centineo).
Dumplin’ will be available on Netflix and in select theaters on Friday, December 7.
