Kate McKinnon Gave Ellen DeGeneres a ‘Bachelor’ Spinoff Idea and We Need It to Be a Real Thing
Kate McKinnon went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote her new movie, The Spy Who Dumped Me, but both she and costar Mila Kunis had The Bachelor on their brains instead. In fact, her hilarious reaction to last season’s wild ending may have given DeGeneres an idea for a new spinoff.
As Bachelor Nation fans watched in horror earlier this month, Arie Luyendyk Jr. decided to break off his engagement with Becca Kufrin, on camera, during one of their so-called “happy couple” weekends. His fiancé was understandably stunned, and she wasn’t the only one. DeGeneres said most of the people involved with the show were shocked, too — including some of the crew members who were in the room when the split occurred.
Though McKinnon — a fan of the show, of course — first suspected that the entire situation was set up, DeGeneres told her that Luyendyk only informed The Bachelor host Chris Harrison and the show’s producers what was going to happen, so even the camera operators who filmed the split weren’t told about the breakup beforehand.
McKinnon was floored by this news. “So [the camera operators] are there and they’re going, ‘What’s going on? Josh! What’s going on?'” she said, doing an impression of what she thought the moment must have been like. “And they’re following to the bathroom and they’re going and they’re crying for Becca: ‘Josh, how could he do this to her? … Josh, we should stop this!'”
“That’s a really good show,” DeGeneres quipped, getting inspiration from McKinnon. “The other side of it, seeing the cameramen. The cameramen respond to what’s happening on The Bachelor is a show.”
Honestly, we would totally watch that. Or an SNL skit about that. (Hint, hint!)
