Lorde Opens Up About the Body Shaming She Faced at 16
There’s no doubt that Lorde is an incredible lady. The singer-songwriter rocketed to fame with her stellar hits at the tender age of 16, and she has a brain condition that results in her seeing sounds as colors. And while that’s an extraordinary gift, she has also had to face an all-too-common issue: body shaming.
Discussing the situation with NME, the 20-year-old opened up about the brutally unfair personal attacks she faced from trolls after “Royals” took the world by storm when she was just 16. “When [the body shaming] was happening, I was quite overwhelmed by it. It rocked my foundations… I remember being made aware of my looks and my body in a way that I had never been.”
She gave an example of what she experienced by saying, “I remember all these kids online, I think I beat their favorite people to No. 1 [on the charts], and they were like, ‘F*ck her, she’s got really far-apart eyes. I remember being like, ‘Whoa! How did I get all this way without knowing I had far-apart eyes?'”
Thankfully, Lorde had the opportunity to step back from the noise. “I was able to return to my family and shelter against [the hurtful online comments] and get to where I am now.” And where is that? A very good place, indeed. “I feel so comfortable in myself.”
Remember to do your best to love yourselves, ladies. You’re fabulous in your own unique and wonderful way, no matter what the trolls say!
