Supreme Court Votes One Step Closer to Bringing Back a Transgender Military Ban

The Supreme Court has lifted blocks on President Trump’s ban on transgender people in the military, deciding five to four on the morning of Tuesday, January 22, to put a hold on temporary injunctions against the 2018 Mattis policy — AKA the most recent version of the ban. There’s some confusion and debate as to what that decision actually means, though.

Many news outlets, including theNew York Times, Washington Post, and CNN, reported that Tuesday’s SCOTUS vote means that the Pentagon is within its rights to enforce the Trump administration’s policy, at least for now. But, via Twitter, a spokesperson from the ACLU offered a contradictory interpretation: that the ACLU’s own case against the ban, Stone v. Trump, and the injunction granted by a judge “are not impacted” by the SCOTUS ruling. This means that the total ban on transgender people in the military is still blocked nationwide while the case is decided in a Maryland court, according to the ACLU.

Lawyer and Slate writer Mark Joseph Stern tweeted that he confirmed, with the case’s litigator, the ACLU’s assertion that Stone v. Trump remains in place. Stern tweeted: “It is extremely like[ly] that, in light of today’s SCOTUS orders, that injunction will soon be reversed. But for now, it remains in effect. So the trans troops ban cannot yet begin.” Stern also pointed out that while “the Trump administration may try to argue that [Stone v. Trump] doesn’t apply to the current ‘Mattis policy,'” its terms encompass the current policy’s parameters.

In a post for the blog Lawfare, Harvard Law student Sarah Grant seconded Stern’s prediction that the Stone v. Trump injunction will likely be reversed, and soon. But Grant also wrote that because the case doesn’t pertain specifically to the Mattis policy, which is the version of the ban that the Trump administration is trying to implement, the injunction may already be moot.

The reinstatement of a decades-long ban on openly transgender military members — which had been overturned in the final months of Barack Obama’s presidency — was one of Trump’s first major policy decisions as president. The decision became a defining example of the administration’s inclinations toward bigotry.

The implementation of Trump’s transgender military ban could see the ejection of transgender people currently serving in the military, and prevent others from enlisting. The ban would also allow the military to deny transgender service members coverage for some medical services, such as funding for gender-confirmation surgery.

Because the US military is estimated to be the largest single employer of transgender people in the world, a ban would have a significant impact on transgender communities. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, there are around 15,000 transgender people serving in the military, and approximately 134,000 US veterans are transgender. If transgender service members are discharged from military service, they will be forced to find work in a job market that is already hostile to transgender people.

Joshua Block, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s LGBT and HIV Project, said in a 2018 interview about the transgender military ban that “the administration wants to encourage discrimination against trans people any time it has power to do so. But the military does have a special salience on our society. Excluding trans people from the military sends a powerful message that trans people are not part of the fabric of American civic life.”

Katelyn Burns, a transgender journalist who covers Capitol Hill, tweeted that this ban is “not about the military, it’s about the right of trans people to live their lives unfettered by the government.”

I have always had a deep-rooted love for The Fantastic Four. Whether it be because The Incredibles (which also features an invisible woman) was my favorite movie as a kid or I just love Chris Evans' casting in the original 2005 film, the tight-knit family bond between this Marvel team gets me every time. And, in my opinion, it's what the MCU has been missing! Fans want a team that feels like a family!

So, needless to say, when we heard that Marvel Studios was finally bringing the team into the MCU, I was overjoyed and have spent the last two years anxiously awaiting news on The Fantastic Four 2025. Well, on February 14, in honor of Valentine's Day, we finally got word on The Fantastic Four cast! Here's everything we know about the new Fantastic Four and don't forget to check out this year's Spring Movies while you wait!

Who is the new Fantastic Four cast?

Image via Marvel Studios/Instagram

Marvel Studios announced on February 14th, via an Instagram Valentine, that the new Fantastic Four cast will be Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/the Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. This is a very compelling cast because not only are all of these actors hilarious on their own, but they also have the empathy and open-hearted approach to dramatic roles that mean we could definitely be laughing one minute and crying the next.

I'm super excited to see Pedro Pascal join the MCU, especially after seeing his real-life friend Oscar Isaac in Moon Knight. Both actors are also in Star Wars (Pedro as The Mandalorian and Oscar as Poe Dameron), so it's like they're sci-fi franchise hopping!

Deadline confirmed on April 3 that Ozark and Inventing Anna star Julia Garner will join the cast, reportedly playing a version of the Silver Surfer from The Fantastic Four comics named Shalla-Bal.

When is the Fantastic Four release date?

Image via 20th Century Studios

Production on Marvel Studios'Fantastic Four begins summer 2024, and the movie is scheduled to premiere July 25, 2025. We're only getting one Marvel movie (Deadpool 3) in 2024, so Fantastic Four will be a welcome addition to next year's summer movies! Until then, feel free to stream the 2005 Fantastic Four on Disney+ :).

What is the Fantastic Four 2025 about?

Image via Marvel Studios

When Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, Susan Storm, and her younger brother Johnny Storm agree to take part in an experimental space flight, they don't know they're signing up to change their lives forever. Exposure to cosmic rays gives each of them their own super powers (including Reed becoming elastic, Sue turning invisible, Johnny basically turning into fire, and Ben becoming a living rock-like formation) and they decide to form The Fantastic Four to keep the earth safe.

When does the new Fantastic Four movie take place?

Image via Marvel Studios/Instagram

While we know when The Fantastic Four comes out, we don't exactly know when the movie is set. Drew Parker on TikTok makes the ~fantastic~ point that based on the LIFE Magazine Ben is holding in the Instagram Valentine, our best guess is that the film will open on or around December 13, 1963. This is a huge date for space exploration because it's the day the UN approved the Outer Space Treaty (formally called The Declaration of Legal Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Uses of Outer Space), approving the free exploration of space.

If the movie really does take place in the '60s, I have LOTS of questions about how it will tie into the rest of the MCU. Will it be a WandaVision-esque illusion that The Fantastic Four snap out of by the end of the movie? Will they meet a 1960s Howard Stark? Will they literally travel through time and space to get to 2025? After theories that Reed Richards will be "the new Tony Stark" (a mantle Pedro Pascal could totally pull off, IMO), it would make sense that the team winds up in 2025 to help Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, and the rest of the Avengers movie forward.

Will John Krasinski be Mr. Fantastic?

Image via Marvel Studios

No, John Krasinski is not going to play Mr. Fantastic. After the internet was calling for John Krasinski and Emily Blunt to play Reed Richards and Sue Storm, John showed up as a multiverse variant of Mr. Fantastic in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness! However, Scarlet Witch killed him so that means we probably won't see him again...

Harry Potter is one of my go-to comfort movies when I need a dose of nostalgia. I own a replica of Hermione Granger's Yule Ball earrings, and my Harry Potter Funko figurine sits in my room at all times — including during my Zoom call with Tom Felton. He's excited about Funko's newest collab with Kinder Joy, but is maybe less so about my Harry Potter house scarf, which confirms I'm a Ravenclaw instead of a Slytherin like him ("That looks blue to me," the actor, who played Draco Malfoy, jokes).

He might tease his cast mates on Instagram for the fact they're also not in Slytherin, but rest assured, it's all in good fun. "There's definitely a group chat, I'm pretty sure it's titled Potterheads," he says with a smile. "It sounds cheesy [but] we do feel like a family. So it's great to see any of them. I golf with the Weasley twins [James and Oliver Phelps] a lot. When I'm lucky enough to see Dan [Radcliffe] in his new plays, it's always great. Rupert [Grint] lives around the corner from me in London, so I see him quite frequently."

Image via Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images

Reconnecting with the rest of the cast of Harry Potter isn't the only thing that transports Tom Felton back in time — seeing his brand new Funko does too! "Usually when someone...shows me a new version, I'm just like, 'Where did you get it?'" he says. "There's one of Draco in his Quidditch outfit, which immediately takes me back to my broomstick days. But they all have their own unique little charms."

Funko is currently collaborating with Kinder Joy, which Tom and I agree feels like the muggle version of the Hogwarts Express trolley ("You get excited about the chocolate, and then after that, you get the Easter egg surprise inside"). He also says both brands bring up plenty of memories from his 10-year stretch at Hogwarts.

Image via Warner Bros.

And as it turns out, Tom Felton and I have very vivid memories around the same movie: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. My local children's museum hung larger-than-life posters promoting the film, and I remember feeling how much emotional weight this particular movie held, especially as we neared the end of the story. The 2009 film catapulted the series into its final two installments, and played a huge role in Draco Malfoy's arc.

"[At the time,] we weren't privy to where our characters were going so all I did really was just focus on who [Draco] was in that particular film," Tom says. "Which is why shooting Half-Blood Prince was probably the most enjoyable. To see the the reason why Draco is, well, the way he is, I thought it was very impactful and I'm amazed at the subtleties that fans pick up on now about his story. It's a very multi-layered character."

Image via Dan Kitwood/Getty Images

While Tom Felton says Draco's not a good guy, he also believes the character doesn't want to end up like his father. "I think he would rather make peace than start another fight," he tells me. "He's done enough fighting...I think it's time that he chilled out a bit."

For his own relaxation, Tom recently made a trip to the Harry Potter Studio Tour in Leavesden (where the cast filmed the series) "just to sort of pop in and see home."

"I spent like three hours...just walking around and seeing how much people enjoy it," he says. "There was a teenager with her mom taking a picture of my costume and I couldn't help but photo bomb thinking it was, you know, a nice surprise or it would be funny. But I was quickly ushered [away] by her mom saying, 'Would you mind?' So I thought that was quite funny."

Even if you haven't made the trip to London to see the Studios in person, you probably recognize them from Max's Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special, where Tom Felton reunited with the rest of the Harry Potter cast.

"I think the 20-year reunion was the reminder of, crikey time flies," he continues. "We're all bona fide adults now, but still feel like kids, I think, at heart because as soon as you put us all in the room together, we just go back to who we were when we first met. So that's a nice feeling."

Rapid Fire With Tom Felton

Brit + Co: You record your own music, but what are you listening to right now?

Tom Felton: It changes day to day. I mean, my staple answer is the Beatles because I never get bored of it. George Harrison being my — well, not favorite Beatle, you can't really pick one, but you know what I mean — I listen to a lot of his stuff. I love Ed Sheeran's work, huge fan of him. I recently discovered a new artist, Ren. Really think he's very skillful so I've been enjoying his music too.

Brit + Co: Harry Potter is our ultimate comfort watch, what's yours?

Tom Felton: I wanna say something that [Harry Potter director] Chris Columbus has done, like Home Alone is a very comforting film. I mean, even The Borrowers, to be fair, was pretty cool. The Simpsons was a big one.

Image via Warner Bros.

Brit + Co: Would Draco get along with any of the other characters you've played?

Tom Felton: It depends how old Draco was, but long answer short, no. I played the Boogie Man in a film called Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting and he's a bit of an evil rock star. So, maybe they would meet up once a week to play chess together.

Brit + Co: Who's your dream future co-star?

Tom Felton: I mean, I'd work with any one of my fellow wizards and witches again. I suppose off the bat I would say Jason Isaacs just because I love working with him and you learn so much [from him]. But I think also there is a secret desire for me and Daniel [Radcliffe] to be in a film together where he plays the villain and I get to be the good guy.

The baby name business has gotten a bit out of hand. While we love unique names, sometimes names like Toaster or Tree just don’t have the same ring as, say, Leila or Patrick. But we totally get the desire to have a name that differs from the mainstream. After all, our names are Olivia Taylor and Jasmine Williams…which are very popular.

People are literally paying Baby Name Consultants, like TikToker Colleen, to generate a list of top names for their little bundle of joy.

This concept isn’t all that new, but the idea of paying thousands of dollars for a list of names certainly is. The Wall Street Journal reported on the rise of baby name consultants and “the art of ‘branding’ your newborn” in 2007. With the boom in baby naming books circa early 2000s and the rise in funky celeb baby names like Apple Martin and Shiloh Jolie-Pitt (and today’s celeb baby names like Moxie CrimeFighter Jillette, Pilot Inspektor and Exa Dark Sideræl), baby-naming has become a source of stress and incredible importance. So stressful, in fact, that a few thousand dollars doesn’t look so bad.

Don't worry though – we definitely won’t charge you $10k for your baby’s unique name. Instead, here are 16 baby names that are cute and unique, and might be the perfect fit for your little one.

Unique Baby Names for Girls

  • Sterling — "Twinkle, Twinkle little star" has nothing on the name Sterling. On second thought, it could serve as your baby's unofficial theme song.

  • Adler — Your little eagle is sure to soar high under your watchful eye.

The ultimate micro-trend of this spring and summer seems to be… wearing men’s boxers as shorts. I know it sounds a little risqué – sporting undergarments out in the open and all – but the boxer shorts trend is delightfully approachable, easy, and super adorable. Like most other fashion trends I encounter, it first popped off with some TikTok outfit check videos. I was hooked from the first scroll.

In a summer full of record-breaking heat, light, breezy boxers are a godsend. They give you the opportunity to simply wear something that *won’t* suffocate you while you’re already feeling self-conscious about sweating. Aside from being a practical pick, the boxer shorts trend gives you that stylish, effortless, and oh-so desired ‘model off-duty’ look. It’s giving “I just rolled out of bed,” but with a more tailored twist.

How to Style Boxer Shorts

John Galt White & Blue Striped Boxer Shorts

The key to styling the boxer shorts trend is ensuring your ensemble has a healthy mix of different styles. If you opt for a casual, oversized tee atop the shorts, it’s going to look like you’re wearing pajamas – which, technically, is what they are, but the idea is to wear them like they’re not.

You want to dress your boxer shorts up a bit! All the girlies are matching their cowboy boots, mini purses, bikinis, button-downs, ballet flats, sneakers (Adidas Sambas, I see you), and blazers with boxer shorts, helping balance out their informal flair. Here are 10 pairs to abide by the boxers shorts trend with creative ways to style them!

Old Navy Soft-Washed Boxer Shorts 5-Pack

This multipack of basic boxer shorts hosts 5 different colors. Pair them with a baby tee and Birkenstocks slides (inspired by this adorable casual get-up) for a loungewear-like feel!

Comme Si La Boxer Classica

These boxer shorts from Comme Si have all the dainty details that elevate their look, like the front label and buttons! The light blue shade could be worn with a denim short sleeve shirt and cowgirl boots for a Western, coastal cowgirl-esque vibe! From there, layer on the gold jewelry and retro sunnies.

Urban Renewal Remnants Made In LA Button Front Boxer Short

It's safe to say I'm obsessed with these colors! If your boxer shorts 'fit is craving more color, opt for this pair from Urban Outfitters. They feature the classic three-button detail at the front, and a stretchy waistband that moves with you. I could see myself styling these with an oversized graphic tee and clogs!

John Galt White & Blue Striped Lace Trim Boxer Shorts

The lacy trim that lines the hem of these boxer shorts is just adorable. It adds an air of femininity to your look, no matter what shirts or shoes you wear these shorts with. Beware that this pair is a bit more low-waisted than your usual boxer shorts – any longline top will work well with them.

Goodfellow & Co Woven Boxers

This is a boxer shorts deal *too* good to pass up – you get 5 for $17! Your summer wardrobe will be full of effortless outfits, thanks to this pack. Wear them with a dainty pointelle tank top and ballet flats for a feminine flair that approaches balletcore.

Oddli Boxers

Made sustainably from deadstock fabrics, this Oddli design is any girl's boxer shorts dream. Any of the colors they come in (um, like 17!) could be dressed up with a sporty jacket over a solid tube top, and trendy sneakers or sturdy boots on the feet.

Aerie Seersucker Boxer

The material on these boxer shorts keeps everything feeling light and cool. The multicolor colorway makes them feel a little less pajama-y, and make them the ultimate candidate to pair with a gauzy white linen button-up!

J. Crew End-on-End Cotton Boxer Short

Flaunting a sportier fit, these boxer shorts from J. Crew are more than easy to wear. I can see the darker colorway of this pair going *so* well with a white tank and light pink cardigan – and if the sweater gets too warm, you could always tie the sleeves over your shoulders for a preppy take on the boxer shorts trend.

Gap Organic Cotton Striped Poplin Shorts

These higher-waisted boxer shorts are made of 100% organic cotton, keeping things light and breezy down there. The lush green color is spring and summer's perfect match, and the vertical striped pattern on these bottoms only adds to their trendiness. You could snag the matching shirt from Gap, or go crazy and pair these with a baby tee and boots!
