The fiery lion closes in overhead as the Western Zodiac moves from Cancer to Leo. Lions are charismatic, self-assured, fun and adventurous people who don’t like to be bored or end up in second place. The sign spans from July 23 to August 22 and is symbolized by fire, the sun and the colors gold, red and yellow. Need some zodiac inspiration when choosing baby names? Here are some creative baby names for your Leo baby.

1. Aslan: From the obvious choices to the less so, many names have been inspired by the majestic and powerful lion, the symbol of Leo. The Turkish Aslan is well recognized as the kingly anthropomorphic lion in The Chronicles of Narnia; Ari and Ariel are Hebrew’s offerings. The Tswana name Tau was worn by a South African ruler in the 1700’s. Other leonine names are the Persian Sher, French Lionel and Léone, and Arabic choices Usama and Asad.

2. Corona: Leo is ruled by the heart of our solar system — the sun itself. The Latin word for “sun” is Sol, a name often given to our sun. Corona, Latin for “crown” and coincidentally the name of the sun-worshipping kingdom in Disney’s Tangled, is a plasma aura around the sun. Rayleigh scattering is a process in which particles scatter rays of light and the Parker Spiral is the shape of the sun’s magnetic fields. On a related note, Isaac Newton, Giovanni Cassini, Jules Janssen, Cecilia Payne and Henrietta Swan Leavitt are scientists who made important discoveries regarding the sun.

3. Cyrus: The sun is hugely important to many cultures, as evidenced by the multitude of names and lore attached to it. Cyrus, Samson, Ravi and Helios mean “sun,” and Zoran is “light of dawn.” Aurora and Oriana are Latin for “dawn;” the Italian version is Alba. Solar symbols can be found in flowers, birds and precious gems and metals, among other things. Many of them fit perfectly as modern baby names: Lotus, Rosette and Chrysanthemum in the flower category, birds Phoenix and Swan, and minerals Bronze, Topaz and Ruby.

4. Leonie: Lions are powerful guardians and stand for strength, royalty, divinity and the sun. The Latin Leo, “lion,” is a massively popular name in its own right. If you prefer to use it as a nickname, Leonardo and Leonidas may be more your style. Feminine derivatives include Leonie, Leontine, and Leona, and are much more unusual in America. And while unrelated to the lion names above, Leocadia and Leopold also boast the trendy three-letter constellation.

5. Osiris: Egyptian mythology relies more heavily on the sun than any other ancient culture. Gods Khepri, Horus, Ra and Osiris all represent different aspects of the heavenly body. Other sun deities are the Norse light god Balder, who features in a solar eclipse origin myth, and Apollo, who is often said to pull the sun across the sky in his chariot.

6. Peridot: The green Peridot is the Egyptian “gem of the sun” and Leo’s birthstone; peridot is known in Hawai’ian mythology as the tears of the fire goddess Pele. Sunflower and Marigold are Leo’s flowers. The lion’s colors are fiery red and the rich golden yellow of the sun; unsurprisingly, gold is also Leo’s representative metal. Gold names include Aurelia, Sona, Vanna, Jin and Paz; Chrysanta and Millaray mean “golden flower,” and Orville is “gold town.”

7. Regulus: Regulus, called the King Star, is the brightest star in Leo. Other common and alternate names of the constellation’s stars include Zosma, Adhafera, Coxa, Alterf, Jabbah, Elased, Wolf and Subra, and are guaranteed to make unusual middle names.

8. Sorley: Leo is the second of summer’s three signs. As a fire sign ruled by the sun and represented by the golden lion, it has the strongest ties to the season. Sorley and Somerled both mean “summer traveler,” and Natsu is a Japanese name meaning “born in summer.” The Spanish word for summer is Verano, which is a nice masculine response to the typically girl-given Summer.

9. Tybalt: Courage and Bravery are good word names for the bold and confident Leo child; Tybalt, Archibald and Brava mean “brave” or “bold.” The lion is also fun, charismatic and a bit of a show-off, so upbeat names like Allegra, “lively tempo,” Lilavati and Lalita, “charming, playful” and Alair, “cheerful,” fit nicely as well.

10. Yansa: There is a huge variety of fire-related beings in mythology. The wide selection of fire goddesses gives us the gorgeous names Ila, Yansa, Brigitte and Hestia; unique fire god picks include Kojin, Agni, Loki, Vulcan and Moloch.

Whoopi Goldberg Opens Up Like Never Before In Her Moving Memoir "Bits and Pieces"

There have been a few “pinch me” moments in my career, but nothing compares to connecting with the illustrious Whoopi Goldberg to learn more about her memoir Bits and Pieces, which comes out tomorrow! Perhaps the most shocking discovery is realizing the parallels our lives share.

Having followed her career for a good chunk of my life, Whoopi’s groundbreaking films like The Color Purple, Ghost, and Corrina, Corrina left a huge impression on me as a kid. Her ability to bring life into the characters she plays is masterful, constantly proving how adept she is — and then some — at what she does. It’s no wonder Whoopi is the first black woman to achieve EGOT status (Emmy, Grammy, Oscars, and Tony awards).

Outside of her (incredible) acting endeavors, Whoopi’s also become an equity partner of the kid-friendly streaming service platform Blkfam, further proving her commitment to ensuring that Black families can see themselves positively reflected in the media from childhood on. Oh, and she founded Whoopi Prosecco while she's at it, because who doesn't love a good drink? She pours intentionality into everything she does — on TV and in your champagne glasses alike.

The fact that the world now gets a chance to become more familiar with the origins of Whoopi's wonderful intentionality through her memoir feels like a gift. Ahead, we talk about how their love set the tone for Whoopi’s outlook on life, how their memory lives on in her, and we get to touch on the active imagination she still feeds today.

“I feel great. I’m somewhat reluctant to share very much about my personal life ‘cause I feel like so much has already been shared, but it just seems like I needed to do this,” Whoopi said when I ask her how she’s feeling about sharing a very special part of her heart with readers. “I try to listen to my instincts and everything said, ‘Now’s the time. You might as well do it,’ and so I wrote it,” she continued.

And while that passionate impetus ignited the flame, she also admitted that she was beginning to forget things, so she wanted to make sure she remembering as much as she can by telling these stories now.

One thing that hasn’t changed for the actress is how much she sees and hears her mother, not just in herself, but in other family members. “I see it all the time. I hear her, and now my grandkids hear her as well. I have a great-granddaughter — who’s 10 and never got to meet my mother — but my oldest granddaughter talks to her like she is my mother,” she said with a fond smile. It never ceases to amaze me how connected we are to our ancestors even if we’ve never had the pleasure of being in their company.

Whoopi feels incredibly fortunate she was able to have grown up in a household where her mother and brother were. “Listen, I’m really lucky that she was my mother. I feel like it was a good pairing. Same with my brother. I just don’t know what life would’ve been like had I been born to different people with all of my idiosyncrasies,” she said.

And that’s one of the things that stood out to me throughout Bits and Pieces. Whoopi’s mother truly created an environment that fostered the individual personalities of her children, while also teaching them valuable lessons that still live within Whoopi today.

“Most of my being is a product of growing up in this particular household; how I listen to people, why I listen to people, how I will and will not allow people to speak to me,” she stated without hesitation, “All of these things that go into her raising children who were aware of themselves and where they might fit in the universe, and her knowing the universe was much bigger than even she understood, so that I could end up anywhere on any planet; the same with my brother. We could end up anywhere and we’d be alright.”

Her mother also made sure that Whoopi and her brother knew not to judge people at first glance until you actually spent time with them, and to be unafraid to disagree with people. “If people don’t want to be your friend after you disagree, then they’re not people for you to be with,” she shared.

The other thing Whoopi recalls about her mother is how intentional she was about not allowing herself to be boxed in by her circumstances as if they were the beginning and ending point of her life. “She just never would accept the world other people kept trying to put her in. She was like, ‘Look, I will do whatever I need to do to get away from this and elevate myself.’ Her attitude was if you’re not curious, you’re not living,” Whoopi said.

The more we talked, the more she expressed her gratitude for her mother and brother again. “I don’t know how it could’ve been any better,” she said with pride. “We were three strange people who really loved each other and because she [her mother] loved us, we knew we weren't different like people thought we were,” she reiterated.

She then briefly addressed her dyslexia with me. While that could bring many down — especially actors young in their career — Whoopi's didn't.

“Dyslexia didn’t mean I was not smart. Dyslexia meant that I perceived things differently. She [Whoopi's mother] said, ‘There’s nothing wrong with that. You just have to get used to teaching people because they don’t know how to listen the way you do. You’re listening with different ears. You have to know that everyone is trying to absorb the information that’s out there, but we don’t all hear it the same way…’” Whoopi pointed out.

Before our conversation comes to a close, I can’t help but talk about our shared love of all things horror. I literally clapped with delight when I came to the part in the book where she mentions it because it’s something I used to think I had to apologize for as a kid.

Yet, here’s this monumental actress who loves the genre just as much. When I ask her which three horror movies she’d watch back to back, she lit up before saying, “The Haunting — Robert Wise’s version, The Exorcist — a quintessential horror movie in her opinion, and Poltergeist, or Nightmare on Elm Street.”

She recalled that horror movies used to come on television every Saturday night, and she’d watch them because she was too young to go to parties. “I love all of the old Universal monsters, all the Hammer monsters. I want a movie about all of them.”

When she’s not watching horror movies, Whoopi feeds her imagination by listening to audiobooks at night. She said, “For me, imagination still comes from someone telling me a story and I can end up wherever I end up in the book.” As far as whether people allow themselves to be in touch with their inner child, she said people can lose it because they don’t realize how important that inner child plays.

“But they find it. They go looking for it,” she said with that familiar smile I can’t believe has followed me from my television to my computer screen.

Based on our conversation and the way she poured her love into Bits and Pieces, it’s easy to understand that the timing of her memoir couldn’t be more perfect — that intention plus action matters.

My own childhood is full of memories where my mother and older sister were the center of my universe. For a while, it was just the three of us in our small home before my stepdad and stepbrother came into the picture. The days spent with with them consisted of free trips to the library, Wild Adventures, feeding ducks at Lake Ella in Tallahassee, Florida, and so much more — not that different from Whoopi's days with her family.

It's always heartwarming when you get a chance to talk to other people and realize that our experiences aren't always that different. It's why I can confidently say that readers will be surprised at how full their hearts are by the time they reach the last page of Bits and Pieces. It’s a beautiful look at not just Whoopi's soul, but the endearing moments she shared with her family, her ancestry, and ultimately with all of us along the way.

The biggest baby name trends of 2019 include names from new sources around the world and in nature, trends reflecting modern spirituality and nonbinary ideals, an F and a U, and a goodbye to a longtime favorite group. Here are Nameberry’s predictions for the 12 leading trends shaping baby names in 2019, along with name examples for each trend.

1. Biggest Big Picture Trend – Global Names: As the world gets smaller, the pool of names becomes larger, with new names from ever-more-diverse origins entering the global lexicon. At Nameberry we’ve added thousands of new names from around the world: Maori names and Xhosa names, ancient Greek names and South American Indian names, Korean names and Israeli names. But now u — and its “oo” sound — features in many newly stylish names. Is it the influence of little Prince Louis? His unexpected name may have simply upshifted the trend to major.

9. Trendiest Name Length – Three Letters: Four letters might be a marker of name popularity, a la Number 1 Emma and Liam, but minimalist three-letter names are the sleek, sweet names of the future.

10. Wildest Middle Name Trend – Animalia: Parents who want to add a touch of fierceness or individuality to more conventional first name choices are turning to the animal kingdom for the wild vibe. As in many other trends, celebs have led the way, starting with Mariel Hemingway’s daughter Langley Fox back in 1989 to the number of more recent starbabies bearing Bear as their middle name.

11. 12. Trend Ready to Jump the Shark – Em- Names: We predict that baby namers are about to become all Emmed-out when it comes to baby names in 2019. After all, we had Emily in the Top 25 for 35 years, at #1 for 12 of them. Then came Emma, in the Top 25 since 1998, and still reigning in first place. A number of dueling Em- names followed in their wake, and we predict that the consensus is about to be that enough Em is enough.

The Official 'La La Land' Account Had The Perfect Response To Ryan Gosling Saying The Movie Poster "Haunts" Him

La La Land might just go down in history as one of the best contemporary films of the 2010s. The soundtrack is amazing, the story is heartbreaking, and any movie that gives us Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling automatically deserves an award. I think about the dancing in this movie all the time, and apparently so does Ryan — just in a different way.

When WSJ Magazine asked if there was one movie from his career he'd redo, Ryan Gosling almost instantly mentions La La Land because of the iconic "A Lovely Night" scene. The number, in which Emma's Mia and his Sebastian (as well as the audience) overlook Los Angeles at sunrise, is one of the most recognizable moments in the movie because it became the film's poster.

“There is a moment that haunts me,” Ryan says during the interview. “We’re dancing, Emma and I, and I didn’t know this would become the poster for the movie. We were supposed to have our hands up, and I thought it would be cool to put my hand [at more of an angle] even though everyone told me it wasn’t cool. I was sure it was cooler."

When the interviewer tells Ryan dancers call that "hamburger hands," he continues the joke, calling himself "Hamburger Hands Gosling over here."

Well, the official La La Land account didn't waste any time and tweeted an edited version on May 3. "Fixed it for you @RyanGosling," the X post says.

While that one hilarious moment might haunt Ryan, the overall filming experience is close to his heart because it's the movie that changed his life. At the stage in his life, "I don't really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place," Ryan tells WSJ Magazine. "The decisions I make, I make them with Eva and we make them with our family in mind first."

"I think La La Land was the first," he adds. I"t was sort of like, 'Oh this will be fun for them too, because even though they're not coming to set, we're practicing piano every day or we're dancing or we're singing.'"

The First Leaks From Dakota Johnson's "Materialists" Confirm Pedro Pascal & Chris Evans' Roles

There are some casting decisions that feel like they're written in the stars. Margot Robbie as Barbie, Lola Tung as The Summer I Turned Pretty's Belly, and Pedro Pascal as Joel in The Last of Us definitely make the list. What I never expected, however, was for Pedro Pascal to be in talks to join two of my other fave actors in a rom-com!! (The other two actors are Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans, in case you're wondering). If you're as excited as I am but don't know much about the new movie, don't worry — I've done all the work so you don't have to. Here's everything we know about director Celine Song's new movie Materialists!

What is Materialists about?

While we haven't gotten an official synopsis on Celine Song's follow up to Past Lives, it looks like Materialists follows a professional NYC matchmaker (likely played by Dakota Johnson), via Deadline. When the matchmaker gets involved with a wealthy man, she realizes she can't shake her feelings for an actor-waiter from her past. Juicy!! It's giving a little bit of It Ends With Us, it's giving a little bit of Playing With Matches. I'm totally here for it!

According to Merriam Webster, a materialist is someone who has a "preoccupation with or stress upon material rather than intellectual or spiritual things." This feels like an indication we'll see these characters have to figure out what's important to them, and whether they prioritize material things or relationships. (But don't we all have to do that?).

Is the Materialists movie filming?

Yes, Materialists is filming in New York City as of April 2024! The first leaked videos from set (thanks to @mickmicknyc) appear to revolve around a wedding (which would make sense if Dakota's character is a matchmaker!). Based on the costumes, my guess is Chris Evans plays the actor-waiter, while Pedro Pascal plays the new man in our leading lady's life. The Vampire Diaries, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Friday Night Lights — will the love triangles never cease?!

Who's in the Materialists cast?

Materialists stars Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans. We're still waiting to hear about supporting cast! I'd also love to know whether Celine Song will pull a Greta Gerwig (who frequently recasts her beloved actors) and include Past Lives' Greta Lee in the cast.

Materialists just started filming in New York City during the spring of 2024, so my guess is we'll see the movie in the summer or fall of 2025, but it all depends on when filming wraps!

Yes, A24 helped produce Celine Song's directorial debut Past Lives (which she also wrote). Past Lives follows childhood friends Nora and Hae Sung, reconnect two decades after Nora's family leaves South Korea. The week they spend together in New York will bring up questions they've both been holding onto — about love, life, and destiny.

The film was met with rave reviews from both critics and the Brit + Co team, and remains one of the most beautiful contemporary films in recent years.

While The Last of Us catapulted Pedro Pascal even MORE into mainstream media, he's starred in a variety of shows and movies over the last 20 years! He was in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and played the recurring role of Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones. Pedro Pascal joined the Star Wars universe with The Mandalorian in 2019, and was also in my personal favorite movie of 2022, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

In addition to Materialists, we'll see him in the MCU's Fantastic Four and Gladiator 2. Talk about a packed schedule! I'd like to get his agent to schedule my entire life because that's some insanely impressive time management skills.

What has Chris Evans been in?

You probably recognize Chris Evans the most as Steve Rogers/Captain America in Marvel Studios' superhero flicks, but he's also done a number of other movies, too (including the 2005 Fantastic Four, which is funny considering Pedro Pascal is in the new installment!). Chris Evans has some great range, and is in everything from the wacky Scott Pilgrim vs. the World to the action-packed Snowpiercer to the mysterious Knives Out with Ana de Armas.

If you're a fan of romantic dramas and haven't seen Before We Go (which is also Chris' directorial debut), I totally recommend it. I've seen Chris in so many action movies that I loved how much space there is for the characters to get to know each other!

Where can I watch Dakota Johnson?

You can see Dakota Johnson in 2024's Madame Web, but you can also catch her in The Social Network, the Fifty Shades of Gray series, and two beloved YouTube videos: Dakota Johnson’s Favorite Comedian Isn’t Ellen and Inside Dakota Johnson's Serene Hollywood Home.

I also wholeheartedly recommend The Peanut Butter Falcon, which was written and directed by Outer Banks native Tyler Nilson alongside Michael Schwartz. The film follows a young man with Down syndrome who escapes an assisted living facility and becomes fast friends with a fisherman on the run as a social worker (played by Dakota) tries to track them.
