David Schwimmer Responds to a British Police Search for a ‘Ross from Friends’ Lookalike
David Schwimmer is busy back on TV as a Will and Grace guest star, but a man who looks alarmingly similar to the Friends actor is wanted for a robbery in Blackpool, England, something the internet — and even Schwimmer himself — couldn’t help but make jokes about.
On Tuesday, October 23, the Blackpool police department posted a photo of the suspect on Facebook, requesting the public’s help identifying him. “Do you recognize this man? We want to speak to him in relation to a theft at a Blackpool restaurant on the 20th September,” the department wrote alongside a security camera image of the suspect taking what appear to be beer from a restaurant.
The comments were immediately flooded with comments from people who couldn’t help but notice that the suspect looked alarmingly similar to Schwimmer, and proceeded to make several Friends-related jokes.
“That’s not Ross, it’s Russ!!!” one commenter said, referring to season 2 episode of the hit NBC sitcom in which Rachel dates a Ross lookalike.
“I can’t see him properly… the security camera just needs to pivot.. pivot…. pivot!” another user said, using Ross’ famous frustrated request when trying to move a couch up the stairs in season 5.
The police department took the comments as lightheartedly as they were intended, assuring the public that it was not, in fact, David Schwimmer in the photo. “Thank you to everyone for your speedy responses,” the department wrote. “We have investigated this matter thoroughly and have confirmed that David Schwimmer was in America on this date. We’re so sorry it has to be this way.”
Even Schwimmer got in on the fun, posting a video to Twitter that replicated the image in the police department’s original photo, as he jokingly hurried out of a NYC store with beer. “Officers, I swear it wasn’t me. As you can see, I was in New York. To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation.”
