Nicky Hilton Just Designed a Mommy and Me Line Based on Her Jet-Setter Life
Nicky Hilton is best known for being a socialite, jet-setter, fashion designer, and philanthropist. Now, the mom of two can add childrenswear entrepreneur to her resume. Nicky Hilton x Tolani launched on February 15 and it’s the twinning collection of our mommy and me dreams. The line features 20 styles in both women’s and girls’ sizing (2T to tween size 12) that range from $35-$248. There are tops, shorts, and dresses that let you match with your mini and feel comfortable, all while looking like a style icon. We chatted with Hilton to hear more about the collaboration.
Brit + Co: What made you decide to go this route, as opposed to a traditional kids’ line? Especially since this is so different from your past work!
Nicky Hilton: It all started because I’ve been wearing Tolani forever. I love their clothes. They’re all 100 percent silk [and] so comfy, with pretty, vibrant prints that are so easy to wear. I actually came to them with the idea for this. Since they’ve never done a children’s collection and neither have I, we thought it would be a fun collaboration. All of the prints were inspired right off my iPhone. The Kate print was from a photo I took on a boat in Greece last summer, the Alison was inspired by tiles in a villa I stayed at in Positano. They all have a special meaning to me and are named after women in my family.
B+C: Do you see your style changing since you’ve become a mom?
NH: I definitely want to wear easier, comfortable things. In designing the line, I spent time with children’s buyers and they told me that parents will not buy things that are dry clean only, because who has the time? It has to be machine washable. So I did research to find a fabric that’s machine washable for moms because I know they need things to be as easy as possible.
B+C: What do you find is the hardest part of being a working mom?
NH: The balance, for sure. When you have two children you’re with one, then you finish feeding and go right on to the next one. There’s no break.
B+C: What do you think this collection offers that other mommy and me lines might not?
NH: Most of the matching looks that I’d seen — like what my sister and I wore — were itchy, expensive dresses that were only worn on special occasions. So I wanted to make the antithesis — comfy pieces at an accessible price point that you can wear to lunch, the beach, school — all the time!
B+C: Do you have a favorite piece from the collection?
NH: I love the Kate and the Elizabeth — I’m actually going to Miami soon and I’m excited to do some mommy and me dressing!
B+C: Obviously she’s little, but does your daughter, Lily-Grace, have any interest in fashion?
NH: My daughter wants to wear anything with Mickey Mouse. I took her to the supermarket the other day and she would find him on everything — on cereal, on diapers. That’s her aesthetic: Mickey-chic.
