Concert Etiquette Is Dead – Is It Really About The Music Anymore?

Concert Etiquette post-pandemic

I’m not the only one that thinks concerts have changed for the worse. Between the number of aggressive shoves and beers spilled on me at post-pandemic shows, something’s definitely up. Out-of-pocket behaviors at concerts have considerably grown in the past few years, and it’s concerning for our future concert etiquette standards. Have we let the real concert experience slip through our hands? Music is supposed to unite us, but it feels like people aren’t really attending concerts for the music anymore.

Without a doubt, COVID influenced the way we act in public. Even though society is moving past a strict quarantine mindset, a lot of the habits we developed while staying chronically inside linger. A lot of concert attendees now have an “anything goes” mindset, like there are truly no rules anymore. Take the on-stage harassment artists like Steve Lacy and Clairo faced for example – throwing things on stage at artists for attention has become more commonplace, which is not a good thing for artists or fans. Not only are die-hard fans putting their favorite artists in harm’s way, the incidents take enjoyable concert experiences away from everyone else at shows.

There's a sort of attention economy when it comes to being a fan – and it’s created a competitive vibe that surrounds the music community. Who can get the most viral video clip for TikTok? Who has the best Eras tour outfit? What zany thing can a front-and-center fan do to catch the artist’s attention? It’s virality above anything.

And after living online for so long during the pandemic, we’ve realized the power of a viral video, especially from the music icons we love. I’ll admit I love to see fancams of Taylor Swift dancing on stage, and of course Matty Healy’s “don't throw menthols on this stage” plays on repeat in my brain. Capturing these precious moments seems worth it for the views and likes, but detracts from the actual live music – which is the point, right? Fans that unashamedly hold their phones up for entire shows block other fans’ views, plus looking through a screen, they don’t even get the full experience themselves.

At concerts, we’re siloed in the same way we were during the pandemic. People don’t say ‘hi’ or smile at each other anymore, though you figure you’re all at a concert for the same reason. The lack of community and communication is what makes shows different from what they were. The next live music event you go to, aim to stay in the moment – the memories you make in realtime will be so much more impactful than a fleeting viral bit.

Tips for Concert Etiquette

  1. Respect others people's space. Remember that just like you don't want anyone invading your personal bubble at concerts, the people near you don't, either. Don't push others for the sole purpose of aggressively taking other concert-goers' spots in the crowd – it takes the fun away for everyone!
  2. Don't record the entire concert. Taking pictures and videos is completely valid at concerts, but holding up your phone the entire show can potentially block others' views of the artist, plus is overall a huge distraction. Sometimes artists just want you to enjoy the moment, away from the screen, too. Just snap the moment briefly before putting your phone back down.
  3. Engage with the artist appropriately. Not screaming and not throwing items at the artist on stage should be a total no-brainer. Verbal and physical violations can really affect the artists' performance, plus, they did nothing to warrant screams, or anything of the sort. Tune in to their voice and instrumentation to relish in the experience, and encourage others to do the same.

If we learned anything from the Great Ticketmaster Fiasco of 2022 (complete with Senators quoting lyrics to each other during the ticket platform's legal hearing?), is that it's way too hard to get concert tickets these days. For popular artists like Taylor Swift, ticket-selling platforms have so many hoops to jump through and qualifications to meet that it's easy to miss a concert, even if you're a mega-fan.

But thanks to these resell sites, Taylor Swift fans around the country (affectionally called "Swifties") are connecting with one another and making sure that tickets are sold for face value instead of an upcharge — even if it's the day of the show. While you brush up on the latest Taylor Swift theories, and read the Emily Henry book that matches the vibe of your favorite Taylor Swift album, check out these social media accounts that can help you score your own tickets to the Eras Tourin 2024.

How long is a Taylor Swift concert?

Taylor Swift's portion of an Eras Tour concert is three hours long, but there are openers too! In total, you'll be in the venue for around five hours. For my concert day (the stadium is over an hour from my home), I started getting ready at 10am, and left around noon to accommodate public transportation, traffic, and lines. I was in my seat at exactly 6:30!

From announcing her tenth album Midnights during an acceptance speech to breaking ticket-selling records to gearing up for her feature film directorial debut, Taylor Swift continues to surprise us. And that includes her Eras Tour, which kicked off in Glendale, Arizona on March 17.

At one of her Texas shows, she surprised the audience by swapping a song on the setlist for something she had never performed live. "You think you can just go online, you think you can just scroll and know the setlist, you think you can just come prepared," she said onstage. "Let it be said about the Eras Tour: we're tricksy."

In addition to her self-proclaimed "setlist hi-jinx," every night of the tour will see two surprise songs. That is, until Taylor started doing mash-ups, which means the surprise song segment can have as many songs as she wants! She did something totally new in Sydney, Australia and played mash-ups every single night.

All in all, even if your favorite song didn't make the original setlist, you might still get to hear it (even if you're streaming the concert on TikTok). While we wait for The Tortured Poets Department — and maybe Reputation (Taylor's Version) — here's everything she's played on the tour.

Does anyone sing Taylor Swift's Eras Tour surprise songs with her?

Image via Mike Coppola/Getty Images for iHeartRadio

Taylor Swift will occasionally bring out her opener to sing the surprise songs with her, like she did with Sabrina Carpenter in Sydney, Australia! After crazy weather preventer Sabrina from performing her set at the beginning of the concert, Taylor brought her out for a medley of "White Horse" from Fearless (Taylor's Version) and "Coney Island" from Evermore.

How does Taylor Swift choose surprise songs?

Image via Chloe Williams/Brit + Co

It seems that Taylor Swift's surprise song choices are somewhat last minute and based on what she wants to play, but we're thinking that two of her songs from Houston are more than meets the eye — er, more than meets the ear?

Twitter users recently brought up Speak Now (Taylor's Version) when images of Taylor filming in Liverpool went viral. The other two people in the photos appear to be Joey King and Taylor Lautner, who both played a role in the original Speak Now: Joey King was featured in the "Mean" music video and Taylor Lautner is the subject of

And we're talking about Speak Now (Taylor's Version) again after the April 22 concert because of her surprise songs. After all, "A Place In This World" (which is featured in Joey King's Ramona and Beezus) and "Today Was A Fairytale" (which is a part of Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner's Valentine's Day) feels very intentional. Turns out, we were right because she brought Joey and Taylor onstage during the Speak Now (Taylor's Version) launch party to premiere the music video!

In addition to playing requests from her openers during the surprise song segment, Taylor seems to choose songs based on her celebrity attendees. The Summer I Turned Pretty's Jenny Han and Lola Tung attended the May 27 show, where Taylor played "False God," which was featured in season one.

And during her last performance in LA, Taylor Swift chose "New Romantics" from 1989 and "New Year's Day" from reputation. This is very telling because for one, "New Romantics" was the only song from 1989 that she hadn't sung yet, and it came right after the 1989 (Taylor's Version) announcement! And based on this frame from the "Karma" music video, we might be getting reputation TV after 1989 TV. So "New Year's Day" was the perfect follow-up!

November 19 and 20, at the end of Taylor Swift's time in Rio de Janeiro, she played two songs from Reputation: "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" and "So It Goes..." (both of which are two of my all-time favorite Taylor songs and are very under-appreciated). This leaves "I Did Something Bad" as the final Reputation surprise song, and Swifties are convinced we'll get the announcement before the end of November. Fans also pointed out both "Me!" and "So It Goes..." feature a 1,2,3 countdown in the lyrics — and there are only three shows left before Taylor takes another break. It's the perfect time for an announcement if you ask me!

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
