How to Get the Best Beach Waves for Every Hair Type

No hairstyle screams summer quite like beachy waves. While celebs including Blake Lively and Becca Kufrin have perfected this effortlessly undone look, not all of us have a glam squad. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t rock this summer hairstyle all season long. It’s all about knowing how to create beachy waves for your specific hair type. Keep reading for the best tips to master the hairstyle, straight from the pros.

if you have Straight Hair

Beachy waves on straight locks might seem impossible, but you can get the look with the help of a few key products. “My favorite way to add waves [to straight hair] is to not use a product with too much slip,” says Holly Pistas, artistic director and master hair and makeup designer at Gordon Salon in Chicago. Apply Aveda Volumizing Tonic ($22) to dampen and blow-dry your mane for a little grit. Then, take small sections and use a 1 1/4-inch flat iron to create waves. Feed a small section in between the plates, rotate the iron 180 degrees, and glide the iron down your strand vertically, leaving your ends a little straighter, explains Pistas. “Let the hair cool before breaking up the curl, or let it do it on its own naturally,” she says. Finish with a light hairspray, like Aveda Air Control Hair Spray ($29).

Prefer to go heat-free? “Another option [for straight hair] is braids, braids, braids,” says Amber Maynard Bolt, master stylist at Nine Zero One Salon in West Hollywood. “Set your hair with a conditioning lotion like R+Co Waterfall Moisture + Shine Lotion ($29), then do braided pigtails and sleep.” In the morning, take your pigtail braids out, shake your strands, and add texture spray. Maynard Bolt is a fan of Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($46).

if you have Fine Hair

Fine tendrils tend to fall flat fast, but beachy waves aren’t out of the realm of possibility. Sara Drury, hair and makeup expert in Lexington, Kentucky, who hosts online courses including Makeup Made Simple, suggests using a lightweight volumizer like Joico Body Luxe Root Lifting Volumizing Foam ($18) on a damp mane to add texture without weighing it down. Then, she suggests following up with a sea salt spray; her fave is Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray ($5). “Texture is really important when it comes to beachy waves,” says Drury, “Sea salt spray mimics the texture that ocean water gives your hair.” Set your waves with a non-crunchy hairspray like Kenra Professional Volume Spray 25 ($18).

if you have Wavy Hair

Lucky you: You’ve already won half the battle since you have the hair type necessary to pull off beachy waves easily. After showering, use a leave-in conditioner, then spritz on salt spray. “I recommend using a layer of Unite 7SECONDS Detangler ($30), then Evo Salty Dog Cocktail Beach Spray ($22),” says Maynard Bolt. Air-dry to perfection.

You can also enhance your waves with the help of a heat tool. “Let hair air dry with Oribe Matte Waves Texture Lotion ($42), and simply take a curling wand in horizontal sections to the parts that need a little more coercing,” says New York City-based hairstylist and colorist Kali Ferrara. Wrap your waves around the wand while twisting the strand to create a less uniform look that’s ideal for beachy waves. “When the hair is still hot from the wand, pull at the ends gently to get the perfect S pattern,” she says.

if you have Curly Hair

Curly girls can get in on the beachy waves fun too. “For curly locks, you want a smoothing and shine-enhancing product to achieve this look,” says Marilisa Sears, artistic director for Marc Anthony True Professional. Mix a little bit of the smoothing cream and glossing lotion from the Marc Anthony True Professional Sleek & Straight Smoothing Cocktail ($9) together and apply it to clean, wet tresses, suggests Sears.

Then blow-dry your locks with a large natural-bristle round brush and spray a lightweight styling oil into your palms and run it through. Take a large-barrel curling iron to help shape waves. “Use large sections of hair and keep them a few inches from your roots for a more natural look,” advises Sears. Finish with Marc Anthony True Professional Coconut Oil and Shea Butter Volume Hair Spray ($11) and use your fingers to shake your waves out.

You can also work on your beachy waves the night before, offers Pistas. Here’s how to do it: Blow-dry as smoothly as you can before bed. Use the top of the crown of your head as the center and make six t oeight sections (less for thinner strands, more for thicker). Spray Aveda Brilliant Medium Hold Hairspray ($22) onto each section and twist at the ends, wrapping them around the base of the section into a mini bun. Twist the front sections away from your face but alternate the other sections forward and backward for more volume. Pin each area in place or use a small elastic. In the morning, take the buns down, run your fingers through, and spray with Aveda Texture Tonic ($25) for grit as well as a light-control hairspray.

IF YOU HAVE Thick Hair

“Thick hair may require a little more work, but have no fear,” says Brooke Jordan Hunt, owner and master stylist of The Bird House in Brooklyn. “You can still rock the beach waves.” At her salon, Jordan Hunt rough dries strands, then uses a curling iron (1-inch or 1 1/2-inch depending on the length of your locks) starting at the upper middle portion of your locks. “Barely touch the tip with the heat, just enough to smooth it but without adding curl,” says Jordan Hunt. “That technique creates a gorgeous bend that looks good day and night.”

That being said, for more va-va-va voom on thick tresses at night, Jordan Hunt suggests adding volumizing dust or spray at your roots for some lift. Marshall Lin, celebrity hairstylist, is a fan of Pai-Shau Texture Dust ($24). “It’s easy to apply and leaves no white residue like some dry shampoos might,” he says.

Women can't get enough of classic updos, and I don't blame them. I have very fond memories of seeing older Black women wear them to special events so I have a soft spot for them.

Cute Pixie Haircut

Short haircuts are here to stay, especially when we know it's going to be hot during summer! Since I've cut my hair on three separate occasions, I know a few tricks that make sure my hair was razor sharp and shiny every time I stepped out. One of them is making sure I used a moisturizing shampoo and conditionerduring each wash day. This help me set the tone for styling.

Next, I recommend using a heat protectant spray that won't dry your hair out if you plan to use a blow dryer and curling iron. If you plan to let your hair air dry, you could also mold and set your hair using a good foaming mousse!

No matter how you choose to wear your pixie haircut, it's sure to look glorious when you properly prep your hair.

Middle Part Sew-In

It wouldn't be right if I didn't refer to this look the way the TikTok and Instagram girlies do. Known as one of the most popular Black women's hairstyles, this is actually referred to as a 'bussdown' middle part — and it looks fabulous on Ciara. Truthfully, anyone can wear this style because it's universal (love it) and isn't specific to one group of women. I mean, even Law Roach has been know to wear a good bussdown middle part, and we love him even more for it!

Curls Out

Not everyone will reach for braids, short hairstyles, or extensions though. Some women will be rocking their natural curls, allowing them to be on full display this summer. If you plan to be one of them, make sure you try Beyonce's Cécredline to give your curls the volume and shine they deserve!

Browsing through Pinterest for hairstyle inspo is honestly a favorite pastime of mine. Lately, I've had braids on the brain, scrolling through summer-inspired styles, and I'm kind of obsessed. So many celebs have been spotted in braids recently — especially our fave Taylor Swift who sports the style almost every time she's papped as of late. And while the tried-and-true simple braid is always a smooth move, there are so many different ways to incorporate braids into your hair for summer! We chatted with braids specialist, Ellie Mulqueen and founder of The Roslyn, Katelyn Ellsworth to learn more about these sweet styles. Half-Up Braided Crown

This is a super simple style that we'd love to see you rock! And we have all the details on how you can achieve it! Our hair expert, Mulqueen, says, "Take two small sections of hair from each side of your head, braid them, and secure them at the back of your head to create a braided crown effect while leaving the rest of your hair down. You can dress this style up or down, it’s perfect for summer!" And voila, it's as easy as that! We can not wait to try this one. It's perfect for weddings or any events where you want to dress up your hair a little bit!

Bubble Braids

One of our favorite looks for summer are forever and always bubble braids! To achieve this, you simply need colorful hair bands and lots of braided sections to add texture.

Ellsworth says, "Braids are amazing for the summer and can be worn in so many different ways. Styling, even the most basic of braids can be fun. Using glitter, earrings, or even pops color with string or extensions is always a fun way to dress up a basic “B” braid. Using multiple braid techniques on one style is going to be seen a lot this year in festivals and in the wild." She adds, "Taking it back to Brittany style with crimps/waves and micro braids will be making it back into 2024 summertime. So get your accessories and your braid guides ready to the room with your style and accessorized braids."

Bubble braids are definitely the perfect way to standout and add some statement pieces to your hairstyle! Throw in some butterfly clips, and you're a Y2K goddess for sure!

Fishtail braid

One bonus about this braid? It keeps your hair out of your face and from getting knotted. Mulqueen says, "Adding braids into your hairstyles for summer is a great way to keep your hair healthy and tangle free!" And this fishtail braid is sure to protect your hair in such a cute way! Simply take a piece from either side and tuck it in-between; just repeat this until you get the braid you want!

Ponytail Braid

We simply adore this look on Zendaya, and we definitely think this style will will pop up more and more with the rise of tenniscore and impending beach days! It's so simple that all you need to do is put your hair in a slicked-back ponytail, braid the ponytail like you would normally, then put in a bow for added effect! And there you have a chic, fun hairstyle for the summer!

Floral Fun

I absolutely love this braid hairstyle for summer! You can find some flowers (fresh or fake) and pin them to your hair with either clips or bobby-pins and there you have it; a fresh bouquet braid! However, if you're less interested in (or don't have time for) the DIY of it all, you can also just buy clips that have these details on them already at Target or Amazon. I love how elegant this style looks, especially for the upcoming wedding season! This looks straight from our Pinterest board and I need to try it so don't mind me running to Trader Joe's for some fresh flowers immediately...

Braided Bun

For this style, it may seem complicated, but it's actually quite simple! You braid a tiny section of hair (like the small, center braid above) and then do a very loose fishtail braid underneath it. For a fishtail, all you do is divided the hair into two sections and take pieces from the outer edges of either side and drag them to the middle one at a time. Then put your hair into a messy, chic bun like so! We love this fun style for wedding season, too!

The 'Bridgerton' Cast Is “Obsessed” With Claudia Jessie

When I sit down with Bridgerton's Claudia Jessie, Jessica Madsen, and Hannah Dodd over Zoom, it's immediately clear that they LOVE each other. The three women talk so quickly and overlap so much that it's easy to believe they play friends and sisters onscreen. And when I ask for their go-to confidence boosters, Claudia can barely explain why she's "just accepted that it's probably not gonna happen" before Jessica and Hannah jump in.

‘Bridgerton’ Stars Claudia Jessie, Jessica Madsen, and Hannah Dodd On Keeping Secrets & Season 4

"Ultimately I could love myself, or I could just be like, 'Here I am,'" Claudia Jessie says. "Most of the time, none of us know what we're really doing anyway. So I think I'm just letting go of any attachment of trying to feel confident."

"You should be confident because everybody loves you," Hannah Dodd counters. "Everybody's obsessed with you! I think, if you surround yourself with the right people as well, like my friends give me confidence, the right people, like your team and you guys."

"'How are you so confident to be so different?' I say at one point to Eloise," Jessica Madsen says. "And when I read that in the script, it was just like [how] I feel about you, and I really mean it...I remember saying it and really feeling like that was 100 percent true from me to you, [Claudia]."

The love is totally reciprocated, and when I ask what the three women would write in their own Lady Whistledown column, Claudia hypes up Jessica's love of music.

"I love music. I love making playlists," Jessica says. "I went through a little stage where Spotify was my everything. I wanted to be a DJ."

"You'd look great as a DJ," Claudia adds. "I don't know your DJ'ing skills yet, but you'd look amazing behind the deck like that."

Hannah adds that they talk a lot about their dogs, and books. "I do love books," Claudia, who just finished Travis Baldree's Legends & Lattes, agrees. "I'm a big reader. Basically I like things that don't mean I have to leave the house. I could talk about the inside of my flat thoroughly. I could write about that, my four walls."

Bridgerton season 3 opens after Eloise's discovery that Lady Whistledown is actually her best friend Penelope Featherington. The middle Bridgerton child has had to keep it a secret all this time, and Claudia Jessie admits she's a good secret keeper, just for a different reason: "I'm good because I forget them immediately," she says.

"I'm like the grave," Jessica Madsen promises.

"I wouldn't say I'm a grave," Hannah Dodd adds. "I just have a group of people that I'm like, 'They don't count.' I will not tell anybody. But like, except for these...one or two very trustworthy people."

In the show, multiple characters' trust in one another is threatened — learning about Penelope's secret identity challenges Eloise's trust in Penelope, and Colin's remarks that he'd never court Pen threaten her trust in him. While we see these relationships evolve in unexpected ways, we also see new sides to characters we thought we knew. Namely, Cresside Cowper.

"Other than, obviously the really sad passing of the Bridgerton dad, Eloise comes from an incredibly sheltered, privileged, happy, nourishing environment where they can all be themselves," Claudia says. "So I think it is really important to see just how different it is [from the Cowper household], cause it also informs us a bit more about how difficult the situation is for Cressida and why she might be colder or a bit closed off."

"[She's] very lonely as well," Jessica adds. "She's got nobody. Not her mum, and definitely not her dad. It's opposite ends of the spectrum."

And while season 3 of Bridgerton is just about to debut, Jessica Madsen, Hannah Dodd, and Claudia Jessie already have dreams for Bridgerton season 4.

"I'd love for Eloise to get political, do you know what I mean?" Claudia says. "I'd love that because there's so much room for Eloise to go there."

"She could be the first Prime Minister!" Jessica chimes in.

"I don't know for Francesca," Hannah says. "I'm so excited to see what the writers come up with. I just hope she steps into herself a little bit more and kind of goes after things that make her happy, and knows that she's deserving of that. But I'm new here. So, like anything they give me, I'm gonna be happy with."

Brit + Co: We've talked so much about books, what are you all reading?

Claudia Jessie: I just finished a book called Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree. And it literally says on the cover "Low stakes, high cozy vibes"...It was beautiful. Really comforting. It was like a big hug.

Hannah Dodd: I'm reading Yellowface at the moment, and I just finished Lessons in Chemistry. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo [was] good. And that really took me a while to find another book that filled that hole.

Jessica Madsen: I have Dopamine Nation...I love audio books. So I actually have Viola Davis reading to me every night her autobiography, which is amazing.

B+C: What music is on repeat for you at the moment?

CJ: I'm listening to a band called Say She She. They're like three sexy, beautiful girls doing like funk, disco pop. Beautiful, cool stuff. And they're really, really cool.

HD: I'm less cool and very generic. Beyonce's new album and Ariana Grande's new album, and I'm obsessed with Noah Kahan at the moment as well.

JM: I'm a mixed bag. I've got a lot of different stuff that I love. Yeah, I've, I've been listening to a lot of Fat Freddy's Drop cause they've got a great summer vibe. Two Feet I really enjoy...I like jazz. Disco.

B+C: Bridgerton is our next watch, what's the last thing you binge watched?

CJ:Barry, which I think is the best comedy that's ever been written, ever. I know I'm gonna re-watch it as well cause it's just unbelievable. The amount of respect they show that comedy is so beautiful.

HD: I haven't binged anything in a while, but I'm really excited to watch Ripley. And I think the last thing I binged was One Day as well, which left me heartbroken.

JM: I just binge watched — I say binge gently — Yellowstone, so I want to be a cowgirl now, really badly. I want to live in denim for the rest of my life, in cowboy boots, badly. And then I just I always put Schitt's Creek on. I've watched it 10 times now, which is embarrassing. I love it. We need laughter. We need fun.

B+C: What's on your summer 2024 bucket list?

JM: I would love to get on a beach. I wanna be on a beach for a bit and just feel the sand and the sea.

HD: I'd just like to get through this part of my life, which is quite exciting and new for me and I don't know. I wouldn't say no to a beach either.

CJ: Just a load of iced coffees. That's great when that season comes around, you can have iced coffee. That's like my favorite cause I kid myself into thinking it's not the same amount of caffeine as a hot coffee, so I'm like 'I can have three!' and then I'm rattling.
