Make Your Winter Wardrobe Sparkle With This No-Sew Sequin Sweater

New year, new me, right? Well this year, I’ve decided to inject my otherwise dark, neutral style with a bit of glitter. I rocked fellow B+C babe Misty’s sequin cardigan at last year’s holiday party, and I’ve been sold ever since. While doing a bit of research, I realized that sequin clothing (at the sheer volume of sequins that my heart desires) is crazy expensive! And for good reason: Sequins are individually and meticulously sewn onto garments. It was obvious to me that I needed to come up with a good all-over sequin hack.

Sequin fringe makes for glittery, eye-catching fun in any environment. It even glams up hot dogs (this is a scientifically proven fact).

This no-sew DIY is so easy you’ll wonder why you haven’t bedazzled everything in your closet (who’s in?). Plus, it’s the perfect way to update an old sweater in need of some lovin’.

Materials and Tools:

  • sweater
  • sequin strands (we used a variety of colors totaling to about 40 yards)
  • scissors
  • super glue
  • cardboard

Instructions:

  1. Insert a scrap piece of cardboard inside of the sweater to keep the layers from sticking.
  2. Trim sequin strands to desired length.
  3. Add a dab of super glue to both ends of the sequin strand to secure them into place.
  4. Glue the sequin strands onto the sweater with a dab of super glue.
  5. Glue loose sequins in patterns above the sequins fringe for added interest.
  6. Trim the fringe for an even edge. Make sure to secure any trimmed strands with a dab of glue.
  7. Allow the sweater to dry for 1 hour before use.

Find a piece of cardboard roughly the size of the body of your sweater, and insert it between the two layers of material. This step is super important to ensure that you don’t accidentally super glue your sweater together!

The most important part of working with sequin strands is securing the individual sequins to the thread it comes on. Usually you’d buy sequin strands with the intention of removing the individual sequins to sew onto garments. In our case, we want to keep the strands intact. Do this by cutting your strand to size, and then dabbing a bit of super glue on both ends to anchor those sequins in place.

Dab a bit of super glue onto one end of the strand, and place it onto the sweater — then GO NUTS. The fringe looks best thick and layered, so we went about four layers deep.

As a finishing touch, place individual sequins (your workspace is bound to be covered in them by now!) in patterns around the fringe.

Trim any stragglers and make sure to add a dab of glue to the ends of any strands you trim. You wouldn’t want to lose all those pretty sequins!

Add additional strands to any patchy areas, and allow the sweater to dry for at least an hour before partying.

That’s it! With a little bit of patience, you can make this bad-ass glitter garment of your dreams in no time! As a disclaimer, this sweater won’t survive a machine wash, so spot clean as necessary.

Permission to get weird granted.

There's nothing like a good sweater to make you feel cute and cozy at the same time. They're some of the most versatile clothing items around! You can wear your favorite sweaters with jeans, trousers, skirts — the outfit potential is off the charts. I'm a huge sweater gal myself, and wear one almost every single day during the winter. Here are some of my favorite stylish and comfy picks to add to your shopping cart!

Valentine's Day Sweaters

BTFBM Heart Print Sweater

Thanks to Mean Girls, our favorite throwback color combo (pink and black) is back and better than ever. The heart print is perfect for your Valentine's Day dinner — even if you're dining solo and just love seasonal aesthetics! Plus the great thing about a multi-colored sweater is that it gives you multiple color palettes to pick from.

Target Heart Postage Stamp Graphic Cardigan

The heart theme continues with an adorable pink and red postage stamp design! This cardigan is great for modern art lovers because the bright colors and graphic design feels like the perfect '00s take on the '60s. Since this is a cardigan, it looks just as good over a dress as it does with jeans!

Target Amour Graphic Sweater

If you're dreaming up a Paris trip for later this summer, get into a European mindset by *literally* wearing love around on your sweater. Since the piece is red, you'll also be able to hop on the hottest color trend of the season.

Open Edit Rib Half Zip Sweater

For a moodier take on pink, opt for a mauve or a dusty rose. It's still romantic without feeling too in-your-face. Plus since it's a half zip, it adds a little bit of athletic edge that literally goes perfectly with a pair of metallic shoes.

ASOS DESIGN Knit Collar Shirt Cardigan

When your sweater is a single color, rely on interesting necklines, silhouettes, and varying textures to make things more visually interesting. Case in point: the shiny buttons against the soft knit of this cardigan, as well as the oversized (ie: playful) collar!

Maeve Easy Pullover Sweater

Barbie pink is far from over, especially when a sweater is *this* cute! I'm drooling over the balloon sleeves, ribbed design, and mini mock neck. It's romantic and casual at the same time, which is exactly the kind of energy I'm trying to bring into 2024.

Neutral Sweaters

J. Crew Striped Rollneck™ Sweater

Looking for something more neutral? Stripes and a ribbed neck still allow you to have fun, even when you're not working with colors. Plus, it just gives you the excuse to wear crazy accessories.

J. Crew Raglan Fitted-Waist Crewneck Sweater

You really can't go wrong with a simple white sweater. It's good all year long! Pair this one with straight leg jeans, booties, and a headband, or wear it with a bright midi skirt.

PRETTYGARDEN Buttoned Cardigan

Channel your inner Meg Ryan with a buttoned cardigan that is perfect for movie days and outdoor excursions alike. Pair with jeans and gold hoop earrings, trust me.

Colorful Sweaters

DOLAN Colorblock Crewneck Sweater

Instead of a regular, symmetrical pattern, add some extra interest to your 'fit with a colorblock sweater. I'm obsessed with the mix of lime and camel here — there's contrast but since they're similar tones, they don't clash. Love!

& Other Stories Mock-Neck Sweater

This mock-neck sweater is a Brit + Co team favorite, and I love how, when you pair this navy shade with dark wash denim, you get a sophisticated monochromatic outfit.

Maeve Colorblock Cable Sweater

In addition to multiple colors, wearing a sweater with multiple weaves adds even more texture and will turn heads no matter where you go! I need one STAT.

Amazon Essentials Classic-Fit Lightweight Long-Sleeve V-Neck Sweater

A simple lightweight sweater is a wardrobe must-have because of how easy it is to layer, and how many other pieces it goes with! This easy breezy shade of blue says summer, even in the dead of winter.

You need to look towards cashmere sweaters this winter. While you're shivering in between cups of hot tea and sinking into a swarm of heated blankets amidst the freezing-cold days, cashmere sweaters do *all* the heavy lifting to keep you cozy, cute, and alwayssuper warm. Whether you're mysteriously sipping a latte at your favorite local café or conquering Zoom calls with effortless style, cashmere sweaters should be your absolute go-to.

When shopping for cashmere sweaters with warmth in mind, you'll want to ensure that they're made of 100% cashmere. Not all cashmere garments are made equal, and the quality of the material used to make them is crucial in securing their overall longevity, durability, and comfort.

If you plan on diving deep into the construction of your next cashmere sweater, it's important to take the length and thickness of the cashmere fibers into account. According to Luca Faloni, longer fibers mean more durability, and thin fibers mean more softness. To get even nerdier about cashmere sweaters, sourcing them from Italian and Scottish producers guarantees their utmost quality (though often more expensive, but it's a fair tradeoff).

These cashmere sweaters range from solids to stripes, mock-necks to turtlenecks, and crop tops to tunics to suit any style. Consider these 20 knit beauties your one-way ticket to a life that's both comfy and fabulous!

Are cashmere sweaters worth it?

Good-quality cashmere sweaters are totally worth it if you live somewhere where it's cold for extended periods of time. Investing more money in cashmere sweaters that will last you a long time is justified, as long as you're willing to put in the time to take proper care of your cashmere garments to prolong their lifespan.

Why is 100% cashmere so expensive?

Cashmere is a rare material. It typically takes 3-4 cashmere goats to produce enough fiber for one garment, so you can expect 100% cashmere to be priced in accordance with its rarity.

What is the highest quality cashmere?

There are three different grades of cashmere: Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C. They are categorized by the length and thickness of the cashmere fibers. Grade A cashmere is the highest quality, boasting the longest and finest fibers.

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
