Is OLIPOP Soda A Solid Alternative For Your Regular Diet Coke?

olipop soda vintage cola flavor

Healthy sodas have surged in popularity. Seriously – it’s a given that I’ll see shelves and shelves *packed* with prebiotic sodas whenever I pass the yummy drinks aisle in the grocery store. Whether or not they actually live up to their claims of being “functional,” the benefits they promise (improved digestion and gut health) get me every time, and I frequently end up walking out of Target with an extra beverage in-hand.

More often than not, it’s anOLIPOP. Of the fifteen available, OLIPOP sells four flavors directly inspired by traditional sodas like root beer, cream soda, Coca Cola, and Dr. Pepper (their version of the latter is called Doctor Goodwin). But are they actually better than the soft drinks we’re used to? Read on for how *I* think they measure up.

OLIPOP vs. Soda – By Taste

Comparing OLIPOP Vintage Cola with a regular ol’ Coca Cola, the first thing I noticed about the sipping experience was that the OLIPOP just felt smoother. You know the horrid feeling of burping right after drinking a crispy Coke? When the bubbles burn your nostrils? There was none of that with the prebiotic soda. Amen! The Coke, on the other hand, felt really rough to down – as you’d expect.

The flavor of the OLIPOP Vintage Cola was extremely similar to the OG soda. It emulated the sweetness to a tee, and even had hints of that hard-to-describe soda-y, syrup-y vibe.

OLIPOP vs. Soda – By Benefits

One of OLIPOP’s things is avoiding excess sugar, but still delivering a tasty soda-esque drink. More than anything, they’re prioritizing something called prebiotic fiber, which gets added into each and every flavor in order to increase the “good” bacteria and decrease the harmful bacteria in your tummy, per their website. Additionally, sipping can help reduce digestive discomforts, promote regular bowel movements, aid in your body’s calcium absorption, and break down cholesterol.

Soda, on the other hand, has nothing to say in regards to digestive health. Sugar is an obvious inclusion in the Coke I tasted, with a whopping 65 grams.

Taking both the taste and benefits into account, I’d say OLIPOP makes for a dependable soda alternative, especially if you’re looking for ways to assist your gut. That being said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with treating yourself to a sugary soda every once in a while. I do it, too. But you do you, boo.

How many OLIPOP flavors are there?

There are 15 OLIPOP flavors: Ginger Ale, Watermelon Lime, Vintage Cola, Classic Root Beer, Cream Soda, Classic Grape, Lemon Lime, Orange Squeeze, Cherry Cola, Banana Cream, Strawberry Vanilla, Tropical Punch, Doctor Goodwin, Ginger Lemon, and Cherry Vanilla.

If OLIPOP good for your health?

Generally, OLIPOP is good for your health. It reduces your sugar intake from drinks that otherwise may be heavy on the sugar, and it contains prebiotic fiber that promotes good gut health.

It all started in 2016 when I got tired of having acne-prone skin and excruciating periods. I'd spend at least two days curled up in the fetal position only to despise the large breakouts on my face. It wasn't until I started keeping a food diary that I was able to boil down the culprits of horrible inflammation — excessive dairy and processed foods. It pains me to say this, but I used to melt shredded cheese on a plate and eat right after having a bowl of cereal.

At my wits end, I decided to adopt a vegetarian diet for a couple of years. Within a month, my acne started to slow down and I noticed I wasn't experiencing bad cramps. I eventually started introducing things to my diet again and ended up having a fibroid removed in 2019 because my painful cramps came back. Once I recovered from it, what my doctor said next still haunts me to this day: "If you don't change the way you eat, you're going to have G.I. surgery because both of your intestines are inflamed."

You may have a similar story, so I thought it would be cool for us to learn how to balance our hormones together. I know you hear it a lot, but you deserve all the happiness, success, love, and health you can get in this lifetime. Should you find yourself struggling to figure out how to balance your hormones, look no further than Tina Salicco Jackson, Functional Fitness and Healthcare Practioner, of Wellness Rootedand Jamie Koll, ingredient expert and health coach of Girls Who Eat! They're here to help you live a healthier life starting with your hormones. Be sure to bookmark this because we're going deep!

Which hormones impact a woman's mood, energy, libido, etc?

Image via cottonbro studio/Pexels

Jackson said, “Progesterone, Estrogen, and Testosterone all impact a woman’s mood, energy, cycle, and fertility.” She also said hormones such as thyroid, cortisol, and DHEA can affect your health.

In terms of trying to pinpoint which hormone is causing you to experience issues, Jackson feels like you need to pay attention to the link between all of them. “The question is not which hormone it is, but is there a balance between,” she said.

What are the benefits of balancing my hormones?

Image via Binti Malu/Pexels

Your hormones play a huge role in the way your body functions daily. Jackson said, “Keeping your hormones balanced is key for almost every bodily function — think bowel movements, body temperature regulation, proper sleep functions, feeling spicy in the bedroom, etc.,” Additionally, hormones help regulate your mental and emotional health which is just as important.

“...hormone balance is important for the ability to handle stress, keep anxiety at bay, and avoid ruminating thoughts and depression,” said Jackson.

How can I tell if my hormones aren't balanced?

Image via Polina Zimmerman/Pexels

Depending on what’s going on in life, you may feel like something’s a little off in your body. You could be experiencing more PMS symptoms than usual, constipation, or insomnia. Jackson said, “You could experience hair loss, facial hair, oily skin, cold sweats, hot flashes, and so much more. The best way to test would be through a Dutch and/or blood test depending on which hormones you are testing.”

If you’ve never heard of a Dutch test, that’s okay! Jackson said, “A Dutch test is a functional lab that uses dry urine and/or saliva to test stress hormones — cortisol and DHEA — along with sex hormones — testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen. It also tests some markers for detoxification.”

We recommend you reach out to your healthcare provider if you have questions and concerns about your hormones as everyone’s body is different.

How can I balance my hormones?

Image via Mikhail Nilov/Pexels

Say you’ve discovered that your hormones aren’t balanced and you want to start being intentional about your health. Both Jackson and Koll agree that one way you can do so is by maintaining a healthy diet. Jackson said, “How we nourish our body is incredibly important when dealing with hormones that are not optimal. How we eat will depend on why our hormones are out of homeostasis to begin with. However, as a general rule, eliminating sugar and alcohol and focusing on a more anti-inflammatory Mediterranean diet with healthy fats is key.”

Koll explained in great detail why certain foods have a negative effect on your homes. She said, “If you consume a highly processed diet, especially with a lot of sugar, your hormones could be negatively affected. For example, highly processed foods can lead to higher levels of estrogen in the body. It’s so important to be in tune with your body and notice how foods make you feel. For example, are you feeling sluggish, fatigued, or less energized?”

Additionally, she explained that certain foods and drinks that contain caffeine can actually raise cortisol levels. “Be mindful of how much you’re consuming daily and how your body reacts to it. Too much sugar can cause insulin resistance, a hormone that helps to control your blood sugar.” Given this, she wants you to be careful because sugar is in everything with over 40 different names!

Is there a way to avoid harmful ingredients in the grocery store?

Image via Alesia Kozik/Pexels

Before you put something in your cart, Koll suggests taking a good look at the ingredients. She said, “The truth is always on the back. Oftentimes you will find the front of products have buzzwords like ‘clean’ or ‘all-natural’ that don’t hold much weight. Depending on the type of product (i.e., household products), there may not be regulations around these kinds of words…”

The ingredients she considers to be a red flag and recommends you watch out for are anything she considers to be natural flavors. “It’s the fourth most common ingredient used in food and beverage products and is not natural. It can be a mixture of up to 100 unknown ingredients, and almost always, brands won’t share what is in their natural flavors as it’s proprietary."

To help you make more informed choices, Koll suggests becoming clear about the ingredients you want to stay away from. “I believe that having a toolkit of 10-12 common ingredients in food (as well as beauty and household) that you know you want to stay away from can easily help you to scan an ingredient label and know if it’s a product you want to buy or not. I also created a free ingredient glossary on my website that is organized by ingredients to consume, avoid, or use in moderation with over 800+ (and growing!) ingredients to easily search while looking at ingredient labels.”

Which ingredients can cause inflammation or other adverse effects in my body?

Image via Andres Ayrton/Pexels

If you suspect you’ve been dealing with inflammation, it’s possible you’re trying to figure out what you should avoid eating altogether. Koll said, “There are so many ingredients that can cause harm to our body and it’s important to note that ingredients can be banned in other countries, but allowed in US products. That is why being an informed consumer is so important."

She said this will vary based on food and beverage products versus household and beauty. Concerning your diet, she outlined 11 of the worst ingredients you can find in food and beverage products:

  • Artificial Food Colorings
    • Synthetic dyes like “Yellow 5” or “Blue 1” often are found in candy, cereal, and colored beverages. Most are made from coal tar or petroleum and contain neurotoxins and carcinogens.
  • BHA/BHT
    • These man-made preservatives are endocrine (hormone) disruptors and possible carcinogens. Look for this ingredient on cereal and gum labels.
  • Caramel Color
    • This ingredient is used to turn food and beverages, like jams or sodas, brown. It’s made in a lab from various sugars and can be processed with harmful carcinogenic chemicals.
  • Cultured Celery Powder
    • Dehydrated celery is mixed with cultured bacteria to create more nitrites in cultured celery powder. This ingredient acts the same way as sodium nitrite, which can convert to nitrosamine in the body, which is a carcinogen. It is commonly found in packaged deli meats.
  • High-Fructose Corn Syrup
    • High-fructose corn syrup is a highly-refined sugar usually derived from GMO corn. This sweetener can increase your risk of heart disease, inflammation, and fatty liver disease. You can find this ingredient in packaged desserts, syrups, and condiments.
  • Natural Smoke Flavor
    • This ingredient is added to products as a preservative or to create a smoky flavor. It is made by capturing the smoke of burning wood but then can be mixed with other additives and ingredients that are not transparent. Smoke contains PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), which can be carcinogenic and left over in the final product. It is commonly found in sauces and dips.
  • Polysorbate 60+80
    • This is an emulsifier that is carcinogenic and linked to other health problems such as developmental and reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, and allergies. This ingredient can often be found in ice cream and baked goods.
  • Sodium Benzoate
    • Sodium benzoate is a synthetic preservative that can increase inflammation and hyperactivity in children. You will often see this ingredient in jarred foods like pickles.
  • Sodium Nitrate
    • Nitrates are chemicals used to preserve foods, specifically processed meats like deli meat. A high presence of nitrates has been linked to an increased risk of cancer. Sodium nitrate is a suspected carcinogen and it is used to prevent bacteria growth and add a salty flavor.
  • TBHQ
    • TBHQ is an additive and preservative that may increase the risk for tumors and may be a neurotoxin and can be found in packaged chocolate bars.
  • Titanium Dioxide
    • This is an ingredient used to brighten products to be a white color. It may be a carcinogen and can disrupt the gut. It is commonly found in candy, ice cream, and frosting.

This list may seem like a lot, but it’s important to narrow down what’s causing your hormones to be unbalanced. Personally, I used to keep a food diary and was able to start narrowing down the foods that were causing painful cycles along with cystic acne breakouts.

Which ingredients can aid in one's health?

Image via Nathan Cowley/Pexels

Just because there are harmful ingredients you should steer clear of doesn’t mean you can’t have an enjoyable diet. Koll said it’s very simple — you need real and whole foods! “This should be a focus and can be thought of as eating the perimeter of the grocery store. [This includes] vegetables, fruits, nuts, high-quality oils, and protein — conventional or organic. Whichever your budget allows should be prioritized,” she explained.

Another helpful way, she says, is to think about eating the rainbow when go grocery shopping again. It’s actually something that’s been helping me prioritize my shopping list and with spring being here, certain fruits and vegetables are back in season! Think apples, kiwifruit, lemons, pineapples, and strawberries! Yum!

Koll said, “Gut health is so extremely important (it’s our second brain and over 70% of our immune system lives in our gut) so probiotic-rich foods like Apple Cider Vinegar, Kefir, Kimchi, Kombucha, Sauerkraut, Yogurt, and prebiotic-rich foods like Artichokes, Asparagus, Bananas, Garlic, Onions, Quinoa are important.”

Can supplements help balance my hormones?

Image via Thesis/Pexels

This is a tricky territory to navigate because supplements aren’t a ‘one size fits all’ type of thing. Koll said, “Supplements can be a black hole with how many different options there are. It’s important to remember that no two people are the same and the supplements your body needs may differ from someone else. That is why I encourage getting yearly blood work and working with a functional practitioner (if possible) to determine your supplement needs.”

As she mentioned above, most of us benefit greatly from a probiotic since there’s so much in our foods and environments that affect our gut microbiome daily. “I personally use a spore-based probiotic, which essentially has a shell over the bacteria until it reaches your digestive tract. The issue with most probiotics is that they are lactic acid-based (bifidobacterium and lactobacillus) and are not able to survive your stomach acid,” said Koll.

"For magnesium, it's important to understand that there are different types of magnesium that help support our body in different ways. While selecting the best magnesium for you (because everyone is different), it’s best to understand the types and their benefits and then select one that is most bioavailable, meaning our bodies can absorb it best. Magnesium glycinate and magnesium threonate are two of the most bioavailable forms," she continued.

How can I start implementing small, sustainable changes that help me balance my hormones?

Image via Mikhail Nilov/Pexels

I’d be dishonest if I said changing the way you eat is as easy as snapping your fingers. Some people are able to quickly make a transition while it takes others a little longer. Taking care of your health shouldn’t feel like a competition though. Kolls said, “Understand that small changes have a big impact and that you don’t have to do everything at once. Start with one swap and continue from there. The best part is you will start to notice changes quickly.” As a result, her Girls Who Eat community has shared that they have more energy, reduced gut issues, clearer skin, and overall feel better from the inside out with her.

“The first swap I would start with is removing fragrance from the products you use as this is a major hormone disruptor and getting a high-quality water filter — there are so many toxins in our drinking water. For food, I would start by swapping out inflammatory oils with high-quality oils like extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil. Just starting somewhere is a huge win and a step towards feeling like your best self,” she said.

Four years ago, I was living my best life during a girl's trip in Mexico when I came down with a gnarly stomach bug — or so I thought. I'll spare you the gory details, but let's just say that was one nerve-racking flight back to Los Angeles. Once I got home, however, my symptoms continued to escalate. A few doctor trips and a course of antibiotics later, I was somehow in worse shape than when I left Mexico. Turns out, my life was in for a major plot twist.

After months of subsequent (not to mention costly) doctor's visits and specialist referrals, I learned this was all the culmination of an autoimmune disease I didn't know I had. In April 2019, I was officially diagnosed with ulcerative colitis — an inflammatory bowel disease similar to Crohn's disease — and in the midst of my first flare. It was hell, truly. A waning appetite led to months of me barely being able to eat, on top of frequent bathroom trips that caused extreme dehydration, weight loss, severe anemia, and a near-total loss of mobility. It was frightening, traumatic, and joy-draining. I don't recommend it!

In lieu of a full-on trauma dump, I'll cut to the chase. I feel loads better now! A brief hospital stint helped me kickstart my recovery. From there, I was determined to learn everything about my inflammatory disease. From noticing the various environmental and stress triggers, to what foods made me feel well versus which foods made me feel worse, I was in a constant state of diet iteration and experimentation to find an optimal anti-inflammatory diet to keep me healthy and feeling good. And four years later, I'm ready to share what I've learned so far.

Whether you're a fellow IBD/IBS warrior, or are simply looking for ways to improve your gut health, I'm hopeful that my anti-inflammatory diet tips will help you feel nourished and guide you toward more feel-good, intuitive eating. Let's get into it, shall we?

For starters, what is inflammation?

Image via Pexels/Anna Shvets

Inflammation is your body's natural response to anything foreign that it deems an "invader." The foreign trigger could be a virus or bacteria, pollen or other allergen, chemical or another irritant. On a base level, inflammation, or the activation of your immune system, actually helps protect you and your health. It's when your immune system goes into overdrive without any invader threat that it can become a problem and snowball into a chronic issue or disease. Persistent inflammation is what you want to avoid. You can actively seek ways to reduce the likelihood of inflammation through an anti-inflammatory diet regimen and stress management.

What should you eat on an anti-inflammatory diet?

Image via Pexels/Polina Tankilevitch

Whether you want to reduce bloating or want to proactively adopt an anti-inflammatory diet, these are the ingredients you'll want to center your meal-planning around:

  • Fatty fish like salmon and tuna
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Avocados
  • Fruits like bananas, lemons, blueberries, and cherries
  • Nuts like almonds, pine nuts, and walnuts
  • Veggies like spinach, bell peppers, and romaine or butter lettuce
  • Dark chocolate
Other health professionals and medical journals also recommend tomatoes, kale, broccoli, and beans — but I've personally found these difficult to digest at times.

What does a good anti-inflammatory diet grocery list look like?

Image via Pexels/Polina Tankilevitch

Here's what my weekly grocery list looks like to reduce inflammation, heal my gut health problems, and keep tummy aches at bay:
  • Almond milk
  • Bananas
  • Berries
  • Fresh orange juice
  • Lemons
  • Mush overnight oats
  • Zero sugar Chobani Greek yogurt
  • Gluten free and low sugar granola
  • Avocados
  • Hummus
  • White cheddar cheese
  • Feta cheese
  • Gluten free bread crumbs
  • Gluten free pasta
  • Gluten free wraps
  • Sourdough bread
  • Rice
  • Lean ground beef or turkey
  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Turkey bacon
  • Bell peppers
  • Carrots
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Cucumber
  • Chickpears
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Coconut aminos (an amazing soy sauce alternative)
  • Low sodium chicken broth
  • Dairy free ranch dressing
  • Romaine or butter lettuce
  • Arugula
  • Spinach
  • Mushrooms
  • Tortilla chips
  • Seaweed snacks
  • Dairy free ice cream
  • Dark chocolate covered cherries

What inflammatory foods should you avoid?

Image via Pexels/Polina Tankilevitch

General wisdom says steer clear of sodas, refined carbs and processed grains, excess alcohol, deep fried foods, and anything high in added sugar as these tend to be the most inflammatory foods. Red meat is also typically on this list, but as someone with a history of anemia, I have beef in my diet for the iron boost.

I said goodbye to a lot of the foods I used to love because I slowly discovered they didn't love me back. Soda was a tough one to give up because I was a Diet Coke girlie through and through. I stopped drinking them altogether as the combination of caffeine and carbonation sent my digestive system into a tailspin. Gluten isn't always a bad guy, but in 2023 it's ridiculously easy to find gluten-free swaps for almost all of your fave items from wraps to pastas to cookies and treats. My favorite snack for many years was popcorn, but that's also a no-go as the corn kernels are brutal on my digestive system. Dairy can be a big trigger, so it's helpful to explore dairy alternatives for milk, butter, and cream. As for cheese, I'm thanking my lucky stars that I can tolerate cheddar and Mexican cheese blends with no trouble. Ricotta, burrata, or anything else that's more rich might be something to watch for as far as inflammatory foods go. Fried foods from fast food restaurants are also a no-go for me personally.

What should I eat if I have an upset stomach?

Image via Pexels/Karolina Grabowska

If you're experiencing any extreme digestive symptoms, you'll want to try the BRAT diet to help resolve any upset stomach or irritation (this could be from a stomach bug or food poisoning, or general diarrhea symptoms). The BRAT diet stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. These simple food items are low in fiber and therefore won't disrupt your digestive system. Extra hydration here is crucial, so don't forget to drink water.

I hope this guide leaves you feeling empowered to kickstart your own tailored version of an anti-inflammatory diet today. It's worth noting that all bodies are different, and a multitude of diverse factors—from our genetics and gut bacteria to our lifestyle choices—means we all digest food differently. Thus no diet is a one-size-fits-all situation. If you have severe dietary and digestion concerns similar to those I referenced above, please seek out a gastroenterologist or other health professional for more guidance. If you have any delish anti-inflammatory recipes you'd like to share, leave us a comment or send them my way, that's @colourwarson Instagram.

TheDunkin' summer menujust hit stores on May 1, and I was so excited to get my hands on the new lineup! In addition to an all-new Refresher flavor, Dunkin’ launched two unique coffee-based drinks and three fun food items (both sweet and savory) to coordinate with the summer season. Of course, I had to see what all the hype was about via a bonafide taste test.

Here are my honest thoughts about the new items on the Dunkin’ summer menu, so you know what’s worth trying! Let's get into it!

Iced Vanilla Frosted Donut Signature Latte

First up, the Vanilla Frosted Donut Signature Latte. This one is so sweet. But so addicting! It may not be the prime choice for those who don’t like sweet drinks, though. I *do* like my coffees fairly sweet, so I didn’t think it was overwhelming when I tried it.

More than anything, this latte simply delivered joy once I got it in my hands. It’s topped with a good amount of whipped cream and a healthy dose of rainbow sprinkles, which fix just about any bad day as far as I’m concerned.

Blueberry Donut Coffee

I go wild for blueberry cake donuts, and I expected the new Blueberry Donut Coffee to taste just like one. I was a bit disappointed when it didn't! I got more of a donut flavor rather than a blueberry one when I sipped down the iced version of this bev.

All things considered, I still loved my first impression of the new Blueberry Donut Coffee. I got it iced (duh), and with cream, it came out to the perfect, most beautiful coffee color. It had maybe 75% of the Vanilla Frosted Donut Signature Latte’s sweetness, which meant it was still sweet enough for my liking.

This could be a great go-to order when you don’t quite want espresso, but are still looking for a nice caffeinated sipper.

Kiwi Watermelon Refresher

The first thing I wrote down in my tasting notes about the brand-new Kiwi Watermelon Refresher was: “MMMMMM SO GOOD.” And I stand by that!

Upon first sip, I got a refreshing (ha, get it?) swig of kiwi flavor and watermelon flavor, which was very nice and evenly balanced. I could see myself gulping this one down at the park or on a road trip this summer! It honestly tasted like candy, which I am not mad about a single bit.

That being said, most of the Dunkin’ Refreshers are really sweet, so if you like milder drinks, you may not fully like this newcomer.

I also got to try the Kiwi Watermelon Refresher with lemonade – a new thing for Dunkin’. I really loved it! With the lemonade, I still got the full effect from the kiwi and watermelon. It was never overpowered, unlike other fruity lemonade beverages from similar coffee chains.

Watermelon Burst Donut

I was really hesitant to try this new menu item because I normally don’t associate watermelon with donuts. One thing about the new Watermelon Burst Donut is that she’s messy… This sweet treat is coated in tons of pink, watermelon-flavored sprinkles and filled to the brim with watermelon jelly.

The first bite I took was just of the donut dough itself – and it wasn’t half bad! My only complaint at that point was the fact that the pink sprinkles got all over the place. They made my lips and mouth messy, and fell off into my lap and around my car. Yikes!

The second bite, of course, included some of the watermelon jelly. This is when I decided that the Watermelon Burst Donut just isn't for me. The bready part was good, but the jelly was super sour – just not what I'd prefer from a donut as a chocolate girlie. I wouldn’t order it on my own accord.

Chocolate Chunk Cookie

Chocolate chunk cookies are classic – you can’t deny that! You also can’t mess it up, IMO. Dunkin’ hit the nail right on the head with this new packaged snack. First of all, I adore the size of the Chocolate Chunk Cookie. It’s huge and packed with big chocolate chunks – as it should be!

There’s a nice variety with texture in this cookie, too. I found that the chocolate chunks were creamy and sweet, while the rest of the cookie was crunchy and downright cookie-like. It made eating it fun!

The pre-packaged-ness of it all is also super nice for snacking on-the-go, or even saving for later (midnight snack, anyone?).

Green Goddess Wrap

Seemingly a direct competitor for Starbucks’ popular Spinach Feta Wrap, the new Green Goddess Wrap from Dunkin’ thoroughly impressed me. Unlike its counterpart, the Green Goddess Wrap is delivered with a very nice texture. I find that other options typically get soggy (after being warmed and put in a bag) and fall apart, but this one didn’t get that way at all.

I loved that the outside of the wrap got a little bit crispy, while the inside stayed gooey and warm. While the texture is quite enjoyable, I was left wishing for more flavor from the wrap’s contents.

Even if it was lacking a bit in flavor, you could easily doctor it up with spices, salt, or hot sauce. More than anything, I appreciate that the Green Goddess Wrap provides a substantial option for breakfast, brunch, or lunch via drive-thru.
