Mindy Kaling’s Next Show ‘Champions’ Could Become Your Favorite New Comedy
Fans of TheMindy Projectsaid goodbye to the show in 2017, and while we’re looking forward to Mindy Kaling’s costarring role in A Wrinkle In Time (out March 9!), we don’t have to entirely say goodbye to her on the small screen, either. The first trailer for the new show she co-created, Champions, debuted this week, and it looks as heartwarming and hilarious as we’ve come to expect from Kaling.

Champions centers around Vince (played by Anders Holm, Kaling’s one-time on-screen boyfriend Casey from The Mindy Project), a gym owner who’s living his best bachelor life alongside his younger brother Matthew. But Vince’s womanizing ways come to a screeching halt when his high-school fling, Priya (Kaling), shows up to drop off their surprise 15-year-old son, Michael.
Michael is finally living his best — albeit much more competitive — life in the culture-rich New York City, but the adjustment to living with his long-lost (and polar opposite) dad isn’t so easy.
Kaling co-created and executive produces the show with comedian Charlie Grandy, who has worked on previous projects with her, such as the aforementioned Mindy Project, as well as The Office.
Champions features another familiar Mindy Project face, too: Fortune Feimster (who played Collette on Mindy Project) will play Ruby, a childhood friend of Vince and Matthew’s. Kaling herself won’t be in every episode of the show, but along with running things behind the scenes (and having a newborn baby girl at home!), she’ll appear in a recurring capacity.
Champions premieres on NBC on Thursday, March 8, at 8:30pm ET.
