Robin Williams Tried to Play Hagrid in Harry Potter and Our Minds Are Blown
It’s been two years since he passed, but our admiration for Robin Williams hasn’t wavered a bit. Williams was a staple in so many of our favorite childhood films, but a new revelation has revealed he could have been a key member of another one: Harry Potter.
In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Janet Hirshenson, a casting director from the film franchise, revealed that Robin actually called the filmmakers because he was super interested in being in the movie. He had hoped to play our favorite giant Hagrid, but he was rejected because the filmmakers had established a strict “Brits only” rule.
“Robin had called [director Chris Columbus] because he really wanted to be in the movie, but it was a British-only edict, and once he said no to Robin, he wasn’t going to say yes to anybody else, that’s for sure,” the casting director told HuffPost. “It couldn’t be.”
As you all probably know, the role of Hagrid ended up being played by Robbie Coltrane, who was actually JK Rowling’s first choice. There’s no denying Coltrane did a near perfect job, but let’s all just take a moment to think about how amazing Williams would have been.
