10 Celebs Proving ’90s Makeup Is Making a Comeback

Our fave celebs are bringing the ’90s back this award season with a classic brown makeup palette. Stars like Emily Blunt and Felicity Jones are sporting coppery shadows for a natural, dewy look, while Kerry Washington and Dascha Polanco are using brown-based hues on their lips. These shades are classic and complement the bright, bold colors we’re seeing on their gowns. We’re counting down the days until the Academy Awards and predicting even more natural beauty looks on the red carpet.

Would you rock brown shadow again? What are your favorite ways to wear it? Let us know in the comments.

We all love getting that extra 15 minutes of beauty sleep thanks to lazy-girl-approved hairstyles (topknot, we’re looking at you), and our absolute favorites of the bunch are those that make your hair look great for multiple days. What’s even better is when that multiple-day hairstyle is a contemporary spin on a classic ‘90s ‘do, and it seems like Kerry Washington feels the same. The Scandal star recently rocked a modern version of an old-school hairstyle that she hacked to make her hair look amazing on day two, aka pulled a lazy-girl card, and you’ll definitely want to copy it. We’ll set the scene:

Day One: Kerry Washington recently stepped out in NYC with a high braided ponytail that featured messy volume and a super-thick braid, both of which kept the look feeling very current. Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, Kerry’s hairstylist, explained to US Weekly that the key to this look was the volume at the front and the use of Velcro rollers (Velcro seems to be having a moment with celeb hairstylists) to pull back Kerry’s bangs and the hair at the crown of the head to give her ‘do that slight rocker edge, but also keep it fancy enough to dress up her take on jeans and a tee.

Day Two: The day after Kerry’s epic braided ponytail revival, we noticed Kerry on the red carpet at the 2015 Global Citizen Festival wearing her hair in a thick, wavy ponytail, which we’re hunching is the residual style from her day-one braid. The look was totally different — her hair was looser — but you could see some similarities, like the volume up front and the same high pony placement, we’re guessing to hide any unwanted kinks from her elastic. The bonus of this look is it’s so easy to get if you follow her hair hack: Just undo the braid, throw those rollers back in for bang volume and gather your hair in a high ponytail. You can tease the ponytail if you want added oomph.

Props to Kerry + Takisha for successfully reimagining an old-school hairstyle into a very 2015 ‘do that looks even better the next day. Bookmark this #wokeuplikethis look for your next weekend wedding away, two-day conference or anytime you feel like time just isn’t on your side. Now our minds are racing about how to make other throwback hairstyles cool again and last through the week.

Sure, it’s fun to watch all those fab frocks (and suits) make their way down the red carpet, but knowing that Claire Danes’ dress was a Prada creation or Kerry Washington snagged her mixed-media gown straight from the Marc Jacobs runway — we’re talking Spring 2016, people — might invoke some wardrobe envy. You might not have a stylist on speed dial or the paycheck to support couture duds, but that certainly can’t stop you from nabbing a bit of that chic celeb style. From statement steppers to color block getups, here’s how to nail Emmys 2015 glamour IRL.

1. Clover Canyon Autumn Lilies Neoprene Skirt ($235): We loved how Judith Light opted out of the standard dress and rocked this bold, bright high-waist maxi and silk shirt combo instead. Spice up your nine-to-five rotation with a similar style and get ready to turn some heads. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

2. Topshop Poppy Double Collar Blazer ($65): Tatiana Maslany isn’t afraid of a little post-Labor Day white. The Orphan Black actress stepped out in a polished, yet oh-so-daring cream-colored suit and sleek bun. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

3. Front Row Shop Strapless Jumpsuit ($65): It’s always refreshing to see celebs mix things up, so we were definitely feelin’ Sophie Turner’s strapless jumpsuit. Rock your own during the work week with a button-down shirt and killer heels. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

4. French Connection Lula Colour Block Dress ($168): Orange Is the New Black actress Danielle Brooks lit up the red carpet with both her confidence and flowy eye-catching frock. This color block number packs plenty of punch like Brooks’ own ensemble, but with a more contemporary, everyday edge. (Photo via Mark Davis/Getty)

5. ASOS Hot Spell Faux Fur Heeled Sandals ($61): Furry shoes and quilted fabric added a softness to Maisie Williams’ structured pink dress. Do the same to your night-out look — while adding a major zing — with these electric steppers. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

6. Diane von Furstenberg Aubrey Chain Collar Silk Sleeveless Top ($248): Claire Danes totally killed it in this shimmery purple number (we’ll take five, please). While Prada might be a little out of our price range, this chain-linked top packs the same modern appeal. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

7. Forever21 Faux Leather Platform Brogues ($30): A full-blown suit and flatform kicks? Director Jill Soloway is a woman after our own hearts. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

8. The 8th Sign Lace Sleeve Mini Dress With Contrast Bust And Skirt ($332): Girllllll. Naomi Grossman’s barely there frock definitely made a statement last night. The “naked dress” trend is definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you’re into the funky effect it creates, this toned-done version is IRL-approved. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

9. Kate Spade Stamped Dots Shirt Dress ($208): Loved Teyonah Parris’s polka-dot dress? This vibrant shirt dress interpretation takes the tried-and-true print to the next level. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

10. ASOS Full Metal Waist Belt ($54): The metallic belt continues to prove its status as a stylish wardrobe staple with yet another celeb — TV personality Nancy O’Dell — strutting one down the red carpet. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

11. Nasty Gal Fly Girl Asymmetrical Cape Dress ($30): Fall 2015 is proving to be all about the cape. Capes makes for a stand-out detail on a classic dress — while keeping your shoulders warm too. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

12. Amuse Society Midnight Silver Sequin Dress ($132): Kerry Washington — does she ever not get it right? This hot-off-the-runway stunner (it appeared just days before in Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2016 show) knocked it out of the park. Steal a little of Kerry’s style with this silver sequin number. (Photo via Jason Merritt/Getty)

13. Nic + Zoe Fringed Up Skirt ($158): Channel some of Natasha Lyonne’s Emmys style with a fringed-out midi skirt. Style it with a flowy top for the office, then dress it down with a classic tee for an elevated off-duty look. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

14. ASOS Shift Dress in Bright Textured Chevron ($63): Ellie Kemper’s psychedelic dress had us right from the get-go. It manages to make chevron feel fun and fresh, which isn’t always easy to do. (Photo via Albert E. Rodriguez/Getty)

15. Urban Outfitters Mercer Bib Necklace ($32): Believe it or not, it’s the statement collar on this Miu Miu dress that really caught our attention. We’re ready to team it up with everything from an LBD to an everyday tee. (Photo via Frazer Harrison/Getty)

16. Zara Studded Top ($50): Christina Hendricks kept her cool despite the sweltering temps in a studded Maxior design. Give off your own tough-girl vibes with a lightweight embellished top. (Photo via Mark Davis/Getty)

17. Lavish Alice Floaty Midi Dress With Wrap Lace Up ($104): Amanda Peet was looking oh-so fly in a classic black gown with a saucy midrift cutout. For day-to-day wear (because Amanda’s gorgeous style might be a bit much for running errands), this Lavish Alice interpretation is it. (Photo via Jason Merritt/Getty)

18. Paul By Paul Smith Easy Fit Jersey Dress In Multi Check ($242): Ladies and gents, meet plaid 2.0. Despite what the critics say, we’re kind of obsessed with Jaimie Alexander’s fashion-forward getup. (Photo via Mark Davis/Getty)

Who wore your favorite look of the night? Tell us in the comments!

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
